Sinfonia Finlandia Jyväskylä, Patrick Gallois Joseph Martin Kraus was an innovative 18th Century composer, acclaimed by Haydn as one of the only two geniuses he knew (Mozart was the other). Small wonder that intense interest has been ignited by his forward-looking music, especially theatrical works such as the ballet music for Aeneas in Carthage, a retelling of the famous story of Dido and Aeneas. Originally intended for the inauguration of the new opera house in Stockholm, the première was delayed for ten years until 1791 allowing Kraus to refine his titanic score into a true magnum opus. |

| | | Haydn in Paris
Le Agrémens, Guy van Waas The programme for the Concert Spirituel given on 13 April 1784 lists 'a symphony in which the players leave, by Haydn', whilst an article published in the Mercure de France provides definite confirmation that it was the symphony that we know as the 'Farewell' Symphony. We cannot know how this score made its way to Paris, but Haydn and his music were extremely popular there. The rival to the Concert Spirituel, the Concert de la loge Olympique, commissioned the six 'Paris' symphonies the following year. “Guy van Waas reinforces the Haydn parallel by taking Kraus's slow movement quite perkily, where the marking Andante un poco largo implies a slightly more reflective tempo. That proviso apart, he directs his responsive period band in a spirited, crisply articulated performance, bringing a fiery sweep to the first movement's development and a cussed energy to the quick-march finale. The flanking Haydn symphonies... are enjoyable, too, with lithe rhythms, transparent textures (Haydn's delicious bassoon-writing always clearly audible in La Reine) and shrewdly judged speeds... With first-rate recorded sound, this is a disc unlikely to disappoint anyone who fancies this particular offbeat selection of symphonies.” Gramophone Magazine, May 2009 | | | Usually despatched in 3 - 4 working days. |

| | | Classical Symphonies
Cappella Coloniensis, Hans-Martin Linde This CD brings together repertoire that is not often performed. The Cappella Coloniensis made this recording in the 80s staying true to historical performance practice, defining the large symphonic sound by the seek, clear sound from original instruments. At least in the case of Joseph Martin Kraus there has been a reappraisal: this Mozart contemporary is regarded today as a significant composer with his own, idiosyncratic musical language. Nevertheless the Cappella Coloniensis aimed to fill a gap with this disc, taking the listener on a journey to discover the symphonies that were composed and played during the time of Haydn and Mozart. | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

Chantal Santon & Georg Poplutz L’arte del mondo, Werner Ehrhardt After the stunning recording of solo cantatas by Simone Kermes (101Phoenix) Werner Ehrhardt and his excellent ensemble l’arte del mondo continue their series focussing on the music of Joseph Martin Kraus with Amphitryon. Taken from the Festival of Early Music in Herne in November 2007, Phoenix are delighted to present the first modern premiere since the actual premiere back in the Swedish court in 1787. The music consists of four interludes and a divertimento for ballet. The work is playful, fiery and pleasing on the ear, and a student of Kraus at the time wrote that music is both “joyful and brilliant”. | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

| | | Kraus - La PrimaveraCantate Per Una Primadonna
Simone Kermes (soprano) L’Arte del Mondo, Werner Ehrhardt Joseph Haydn named him as ‘one of the greatest geniuses that I have ever known’: the Mozart contemporary Joseph Martin Kraus is finally regaining his place in the classical music pantheon, thanks in no small part to the efforts of Werner Ehrhardt who for many years has promoted his music. On this new SACD the exceptional young soprano Simone Kermes performs these four cantatas, fascinating solo dramas en miniature, with élan. Renowned for her breathtaking coloratura, Kermes uses her virtuosiy to great effect in these forgotten jewels of the classical repertoire. In the tradition of the great vocal virtuosi of the time, Simone Kermes has enriched the cantatas with her own cadenzas. This disc includes world première recordings. “The advocacy of a mesmerising voice always helps a neglected composer’s profile. Yet without Kermes’s shining, liquid voice it would still be worth hearing these four display cantatas by Joseph Martin Kraus (a contemporary of Mozart, based in Sweden). Mozart himself would enjoy the music’s lyric smile at the beginning of La Pesce. There is nothing ordinary, either, about the spirited playing of L’Arte del Mondo, directed by Werner Erhardt” The Times, 20th June 2008 **** “Simone Kermes is compellingly dramatic in both pacing and expression, equally effective in stage whispers, snarling jealously and a heavenly cantabile.” BBC Music Magazine, September 2008 **** | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

| | | Kraus - Violin Concerto
Kraus: | Concerto for violin in C Major with cadenzas by Bertil van Boer Olympie: Incidental Music, VB 33 The incidental music for Johan Henrik Kellgren’s tragedy Olympie consists of a powerful Sturm und Drang overture, an off-stage march, four entr’actes and an epilogue. Azire: Ballet Music, VB 18 The final work included here represents virtually the only portions that have survived from Kraus’s early 1779 Swedish opera Azire. They are fragments with a joyous mood, making it all the more a pity that Kraus’s first dramatic work for the stage has been lost. |
