During the 1950s, 60s and 70s, Decca recorded a number of albums with some of its key conductors of Overtures. Many of these were singled out by the press for their terrific sound quality (the fabled ‘Decca Sound’) and for their often adventurous programming. Some of them also included entr’actes and intermezzi. Prized as collectors’ items, many of the original LPs exchange hands at high prices. And most of these reissues, in Decca Eloquence’s ‘Romantic Overtures’ series appear in CD, in part or whole, for the first time.

Romantic Overtures – Volume 3 features a conductor who recorded for Decca over a span of 36 years, from the 78 / early LP era (1949) to 1985: Karl Münchinger. Best known for his recordings from the Baroque and Classical eras, made mostly with ‘his’ Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra, he also recorded with the Vienna Philharmonic and made just one recording – of Schumann’s Manfred and Gluck’s Alceste Overtures – with L’Orchestre de la Suisse Romande (in 1954). Appearing on CD for the first time, they round off a 2CD set that includes, also for the first time on CD, Münchinger’s recording of Beethoven Overtures, as well as a remarkable recording ‘Romantic Overtures’ of music by Weber, Schumann, Schubert, Cherubini and Mendelssohn. Also included is Schubert’s Zauberharfe overture which appeared on Münchinger’s famous disc of the incidental music for Rosamunde.

This new collection of 55 CDs from the acclaimed label offers a wealth of recordings from the 1950s and 1960s in an unrivalled range of repertory.

This ranges from solo Bach played by harpsichordist Rafael Puyana to American composer and conductor Howard Hanson in his own works as well as music by fellow-Americans. Key artists include Antal Dorati in works ranging from Beethoven to Bartók and Berg; Frederick Fennell, Rafael Kubelík, Paul Paray and János Starker.

An extensive 182 page booklet includes new essays on the history and development of the Mercury label by Thomas Fine (son of Wilma Cozart Fine, legendary producer of the MLP label) and Mike Gray. Numerous photographs are included and full recording information is documented. When we say full recording information, we mean it too. All the details collectors love to see is here: the microphones, the recording location, the original engineers, the subsequent remastering engineers, even the type of recording equipment.

Two CDs of true rarities are included: Dorati’s 1953 mono recording of The Rite of Spring; and making its first-ever appearance on CD is John Corigliano’s Piano Concerto. The CD also includes a rare 16 minute interview with Corigliano and pianist Hilde Somer.

Mendelssohn: Concerto in D minor for Violin, Piano and Strings & Octet

Mendelssohn: Concerto in D minor for Violin, Piano and Strings & Octet

Mendelssohn:

Concerto in D minor for Violin, Piano and String Orchestra

Polina Leschenko (piano) & Richard Tognetti (violin)

Octet in E flat major, Op. 20

The Concerto in D minor for Violin, Piano and Strings is not one of Mendelssohn’s most well-known works; composed when he was 14, its first two public performances were given 134 years apart. The Octet is one of Mendelssohn’s most popular pieces and is expertly executed here in a clean and well-spaced recording.

Founded in 1975 the Australian Chamber Orchestra is internationally acclaimed as ‘ the best chamber orchestra on earth’ The Times

“What a superb group of musicians!...The eight strings of the Australian Chamber Orchestra play with finesse and vitality such that they fear no comparisons with the competition, even the most prestigious.” MusicWeb International, April 2013

“For a 35-minute work by a 14-year-old, this concerto is extraordinary — not especially memorable, maybe, but amazingly fluent and full of brilliant textures, which Tognetti and Leschenko make the most of in this spirited performance” Sunday Times, 21st April 2013

“we hear the [Octet] in all its fascinating detail, yet, with an overall sound that's finely blended...with splendid solo playing [in the Concerto], the result here is certainly exciting, and you may agree with me that the Concerto benefits from such creative engagement.” Gramophone Magazine, June 2013

“The latest disc from the musicians of the Australian Chamber Orchestra is a winner...every note of this performance is lived, phrasing is always imaginative and, as with all the ACO's best work, there's a sense of these players rediscovering a familiar masterpiece anew.” International Record Review, May 2013

Roger Norrington was the first conductor to rediscover the original sound of the Romantic era. His recordings of famous overtures from Schubert to Wagner showed how fresh, indeed revolutionary an orchestra sounded in the early 19th century. Thanks to his careful studies of the instruments and performing practice of the time, Norrington brings out the poetry of the music in an unprecedented way, making his readings into true milestones of interpretation.
