The Brabant Ensemble, Stephen Rice Morales was the first Spanish composer to achieve true international fame, and was described by contemporaries as ‘the light of Spain in music’. Although he is relatively well-represented in recordings, a few pieces have attracted the attention of performers at the expense of the majority of his output. This recording aims to begin filling that gap by presenting works which are so far underexposed, yet which are of extremely high quality. The longest work on this disc is the Magnificat primi toni. In 1542 Morales wrote a set of eight Magnificats (one in each of the ‘tones’—‘keys’, in modern terms). The prevailing liturgy of the day, however, required the canticle to be sung alternatim, with alternate verses sung to plainchant; to adhere to this, and perhaps to double his earnings, Morales split his compositions in half for publication—apparently two Magnificats per ‘tone’, each with half the verses only set to music. And so it has remained to this day. This is the first recording of any of Morales’s Magnificats to present the entire work as the composer originally intended. The Brabant Ensemble and Stephen Rice are rapidly confirming themselves as major contenders in the field of Renaissance polyphony. Their performances and recordings are praised both for the integrity of their scholarship and also for their unique vocal balance. This is the group’s fourth recording for Hyperion, and one which we expect to be as favourably received as have been their discs of Crecquillon, Manchicourt and Gombert. “…the Brabant Ensemble… turn in very solid readings, subdued or serene, as text and music demand. In the Magnificat, the intensity steps up a notch, reaching an impressive climax. …the ensemble quality here belies the fact that only four voices are involved (except at the very end) this is the Brabant Ensemble at their most vigorous and confident.” Gramophone Magazine, November 2008 |

| | | Lamentations
Egidius Kwartet & Gregoriana The Lamentations of the prophet Jeremiah were written to commemorate the devastation of the city
of Jerusalem and the fall of Judah in 586 BC. Lamentations have a character that is entirely their
own and this recording shows the development of the genre in the 16th century, demonstrating the
various styles by the composers of the time. | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | The Golden Age
In the run up to their 40th Anniversay on May 1st the Kings Singers present the first of two albums on Signum Classics. Portugese, Spanish and Mexican music imbued with religious sensuousness from the 16th Century - the Siglo de Oro - performed by the world's most prestigious a cappella ensemble. This release mixes Hispanic music from both sides of the Atlantic with composers including Lobo, Vivanco, Morales, Victoria and Melgas. “Despite many changes of personnel over the past 40 years, the King's Singers maintain their unmistakable cool timbre, faultless intonation and smooth blend - almost too smooth at times in these examples of passionate, sensuous 16th-century Spanish, Portuguese and Mexican polyphony, the first release marking their anniversary...The Golden Age represents the Singers' bedrock repertoire - great examples of unaccompanied choral music sung with precision and insight by masters of their art.” The Observer, 27th April 2008 “The King's Singers perform with their customary clarity of line, rhythmic grace and attention to detail.” BBC Music Magazine, April 2008 “Lamentations can be glorious when delivered by these wonderful singers.” Gramophone Magazine, May 2008 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| Pilgrimage to Santiago
The Monteverdi Choir, John Eliot Gardiner recorded: All Hallows, Gospel Oak, London - May 2005 Being a man for great
journeys of exploration,
John Eliot Gardiner took
his Monteverdi Choir on
a musical pilgrimage to
Santiago in 2004. The
concerts they gave along
the route have yielded
this superb album. All
the composers have a
connection with Spain,
so Morales and Mouton
are set alongside Dufay
and Victoria, marvellous
performances all. - Gramophone Magazine “Unaccompanied, the Monteverdi Choir goes back to its roots in a programme which harnesses scholarship and singing of breathtaking beauty.” Gramophone Magazine, October 2008 BBC Music Magazine

The Choir of Westminster Cathedral, James O'Donnell (Master of Music) ‘This distinguished composer is now suitably represented on disc. Highly recommended’ (Fanfare, USA) “The richness of the choir well matches Morale's creamy palette. Conductor O'Donnell's leisurely pace allows the full splendour of the polyphony to unfold, while his paragraphing captures the work's proportions.” BBC Music Magazine, November 2008 **** | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |
