Mozart: Clarinet Quintet & Quintet Fragments

Mozart: Clarinet Quintet & Quintet Fragments

in completions by Robert Levin and Franz Beyer

Mozart:

Clarinet Quintet in A major, K581

Rondo in A Major (fragment), KV 581a

Quintet Movement in F, K580b

Allegro in B flat for clarinet, 2 violins, viola & cello, KAnh.91 (516c)

Mozart created the medium of the Clarinet Quintet K581 by means of a process that involved a number of preliminary experimental fragments, all of which can also be heard on this disc. Like the Clarinet Concerto, the Quintet K581 was intended for Stadler’s basset clarinet in A, which was furnished with an additional four semitones at the bottom of the compass. Colin Lawson’s boxwood basset clarinet (modelled on Viennese instruments of the period) was especially created for him in 1988 by the Cambridge maker Daniel Bangham. For the Allegro in F K580b he plays the more brilliant clarinet in C and is joined by Michael Harris (basset horn). The Allegro K516c features the extremely rare Bb basset clarinet used elsewhere by Mozart only in the virtuoso obbligato to ‘Parto, parto’ from La Clemenza di Tito. Colin Lawson, described by BBC Music Magazine as ‘the doyen of period clarinettists’ explores Mozart’s original sound world in partnership with his colleagues from The Revolutionary Drawing Room.

“Robert Levin's completion of a rondo originally destined for the Clarinet Quintet lends fresh perspective on a familiar piece whose colours glow courtesy of Lawson's basset clarinet.” BBC Music Magazine, April 2013 ***

“It's an enlightened beginning to an interpretation of distinction...[Lawson] draws from his basset (copy of a period model, as are the other clarinets used here) a woody tone of subtly varied hues, balanced with strings equally sensitive to the composer's skills in texturing.” Gramophone Magazine, March 2013

“The biggest draw here is the fragmentary odds and ends: you’ve probably never heard this eight-bar fragment for clarinet and string quartet, which is unbearably intriguing...this is a fascinating peek at Mozart’s clarinet music: that is, the clarinet music you’ve never before heard.” MusicWeb International, 2nd May 2013

“Period-copy instruments by Daniel Bangham lend a piquancy both emotional and scholarly to this disc supplementing Mozart’s sublime Quintet, K581, for basset clarinet in A and strings, with associated chamber fragments” Sunday Times, 6th January 2013

“Colin Lawson uses a modern copy of [a basset clarinet] for his performance of the quintet with the period strings of the Revolutionary Drawing Room; there's a wonderful smoky smoothness to his tone that's distinctly different from the sound of the period clarinet he uses in one of the Mozart fragments that complete the disc” The Guardian, 3rd January 2013 ****

Quartetto d’Archi del Teatro La Fenice di Venezia

This recording presents a rare performance with basset clarinet performed by the very prestigious Ensemble Quartetto d’Archi del Teatro La Fenice di Venezia. Mozart composed the Quintets for Anton Stadler, a mason who he met in the Masonic Lodge “Zur Wohltätigkeit”. The works, very popular today, are usually performed on the modern clarinet but evidence has shown they were originally composed for the basset clarinet.

My Favourite Opera: Ruggero Raimondi

My Favourite Opera: Ruggero Raimondi

Mozart:

Don Giovanni, K527

Ruggero Raimondi (bass-baritone)

Orchestra and Chorus of the Teatro Communale Di Bologna, Riccardo Chailly

My Favourite Opera – a new series of EuroArts: Here we study the results of involvement with a specific role. We witness musical and stage rehearsals in 1992, listen to what the artists have to say about the work in progress and share in private moments.

World famous bass-baritone Ruggero Raimondi returns to his birthplace of Bologna to perform the title role in Mozart's masterwork "Don Giovanni" at the historic Teatro Comunale - a role he has performed over 400 times world-wide.

He worked alongside conductor Riccardo Chailly and stage director Luca Ronconi as well as a distinguished cast of fellow singers. As the production develops he takes time out to reflect on his career with his family in the beautiful Italian countryside, coaches students at the Bologna Conservatory who are themselves studying Don Giovanni, and reflects on the character of another great operatic Don, Massenet’s Don Quichotte, inspired by Cervantes’ immortal Don Quixote.

This intimate portrait of a great opera singer also reveals how an opera production is created at the highest level.

“Whilst the process of getting an opera onto the stage is interesting, even more so are the insights the film gives into Raimondi himself...As such I think it should interest all opera-lovers as well as Ruggero Raimondi admirers, and at a reasonable price.” MusicWeb International, April 2013

Irene Scharrer (piano)

IRENE SCHARRER, though perhaps the least remembered of the major Matthay pupils, was the earliest to record, beginning in 1909 at the age of 21.That in itself is a credit to her early fame, which she established through an extrovert, but always musical, virtuosity.

She excelled in such works as the Chopin Etudes, nine of which she recorded, and in other brilliant pieces such as those here by Scarlatti and Liszt, but the poise and refinement of her Chopin nocture or the slow movement of the Mozart sonata reveal another side to her playing that is sadly underrepresented on disc. Her final recording, of the Litolff Scherzo, was also her most famous; in its day it was a best seller and was responsible for putting that work on the musical map. This set reissues for the first time all Scharrer’s electrical recordings and also an example of every work she recorded in the acoustic era (pre 1925) that was not later remade as an electrical recording. For completeness, a discography of all her other acoustic recordings is also included.

“Her playing is a revelation and shows her to be a far more charismatic player than her distant cousin Harriet Cohen...What charm and brio, what joie de vivre! If the fingers sometimes run away with themselves with an occasional loss of detail, who can possibly object in the face of such uninhibited, joyous bravura?...This is an invaluable release.” Gramophone Magazine, November 2012
