| | | Mozart: Piano Concertos Nos. 17 & 26
Ronald Brautigam returns with the third instalment in his series of Mozart’s piano concertos and is joined again by Die Kölner Akademie conducted by Michael Alexander Willens. The present disc includes Piano Concerto No.26 in D major, K 537, nicknamed the ‘Coronation Concerto’. Although the title page stated the work was ‘performed by the composer at Frankfurt-am-Main on the occasion of the Coronation of Emperor Leopold II’, the concert took place a week after the actual coronation, and was not part of the official festivities. It is here preceded by Piano Concerto No.17 in G major, K 453, one of the rare concertos that Mozart composed with another soloist than himself in mind – in this case his student Barbara Ployer. “This is a really fine performance [of K453], with the slow movement's sublime interplay between piano and winds perfectly judged, and the wit and drama of the variation finale vividly handled - especially in the opera buffa coda, where you can almost smell the greasepaint.” BBC Music Magazine, January 2013 **** “Brautigam's sinuous reading of K453, which makes much of Mozart's long, lolloping lines, has elegance to spare. But he doesn't lose sight of the more mischievous elements either...[the fortepiano] has tremendous clarity throughout its range” Gramophone Magazine, April 2013 “His playing has energy, sparkle, grace and clarity - points are never laboured but there is real personality. The dialogue between the soloist and orchestra is effortlessly managed thanks to careful balance, and there's a feeling of joyous engagement throughout the performance...The SACD sound is superb: open, clear and always in focus” International Record Review, December 2012 | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Anu Komsi: Coloratura
Anu Komsi, Finland’s ‘coloratura assoluta’, here presents a wide-ranging programme, from mad scenes and rage arias from 18th- and 19th-century operas, to Alyabyev’s ever-soaring Nightingale and the silvery tinkling of Lakmé’s Bell Song. Komsi also performs later examples of coloratura, including Glière’s glittering Concerto for coloratura and orchestra, and La Machine de l’être by the composer John Zorn – a work which she premiered in New York City in 2011. The disc closes with a thoroughly idiomatic performance of Sibelius’ Luonnotar, with its text from the Finnish national epos Kalevala. Throughout the programme, Anu Komsi is supported by the Lahti Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sakari Oramo. “Anu Komsi's cosmopolitan experience and technical expertise show in the breadth and quality of her programme. And Sakari Oramo makes much of her accompaniments.” BBC Music Magazine, March 2013 *** “Are coloratura soprano showcases ever supposed to be this provocative?...Placing Gliere and Zorn on the same disc is a brilliant stroke of programming. Komsi is at her inventive best in creating subtexts to the wordless vocal lines, suggesting a sunny lifetime of experience in Gliere...[Her] artistry comes together fully in Sibelius's Luonnotar” Gramophone Magazine, January 2013 | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Mozart: Sonatas for Piano and Violin
Ondine is pleased to release its first chamber music recording from violinist Christian Tetzlaff, featuring his long time pianist Lars Vogt. The selection of these sonatas for piano and violin by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart demonstrate the composer’s genius and show a wide range of emotions. Christian Tetzlaff is considered as one of the very best violinists in the world. His recording of the violin concertos by Mendelssohn and Schumann, released on Ondine in 2011 (ODE 1195-2) was greeted with considerable acclaim. Lars Vogt was appointed the first ever “Pianist in Residence” by the Berlin Philharmonic in 2003/04 and enjoys a high profile as a soloist and chamber musician. 2013 will see a Schumann Sonata release by Tetzlaff and Vogt on Ondine. “often bar-by-bar alternation between joy and sadness, beauty and regret, in mature Mozart is something to which Christam Tetzlaff and Lars Vogt are continuously alive...Tetzlaff finding a different articulation and colour for his almost every phrase...hardly 'period' performances, but these players find so much meaning in this music.” BBC Music Magazine, February 2013 **** “This disc brings toether two musicians absolutely at the top of their game and with long experience of working together, as the easy dialogue between them amply demonstrates...It's the hyper-reactivity between the two players that is a constant delight, as witness their subtle way of varying repeats...A delight from beginning to end. Would it be too much to hope that this might be the start of a series?” Gramophone Magazine, February 2013 “Tetzlaff and Vogt display strong character throughout yet they still evince warmth and sensitivity. The results are impeccable and dignified; teamwork and love for the music is at the heart of this. The sound quality is pleasingly clear with the piano set slightly further forward in the balance. No admirer of Mozart’s chamber music should hesitate with this Ondine release.” MusicWeb International, April 2013 BBC Music Magazine

| | | Mozart - Symphonies Volume 9
This is the seventh release in the acclaimed series of the complete symphonies by W.A. Mozart recorded by the Danish National Chamber Orchestra and their renowned Austro-Hungarian chief conductor Adam Fischer. On this volume you can enjoy the symphonies nos. 31, 33 and 34 composed during 1778-80. The CD booklets in this series offer reflective essays on Mozart and the Classical period - this time about the composer's special choice of keys for his symphonies as well as his relation to his audiences. “Fischer grabs instant attention...turning the first-movement Allegro assai into a curtain-raiser of a kinetic excitement that could have run away with itself. But Fischer is in unqualified control, the clarity of SACD revealing detail but some shallowness too...Fischer's pliancy of phrase and range of micro-dynamics...are as impressive as his imperious opening movement and virtuoso finale.” Gramophone Magazine, February 2013 | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Riccardo Muti conducts Rossini, Schumann & Mozart
Of the artists active today, Ricardo Muti has been a welcome guest at the Festival for more than 40 years. His first conducting engagements there did not just provide the basis for his current “telepathic” relationship with the Vienna Philharmonic, but also brought collaborations with important soloists of the older generation. Thus the new CD in the series FESTIVAL DOCUMENTS includes the Piano Concerto by Robert Schumann under Muti’s baton, with Sviatoslav Richter once more proving the uniqueness of his pianistic gifts. Over and above all its virtuoso challenges, Richter and Muti together give an account triumphant in its formal cohesion and in which they sculpt it as a large-scale musical arch. Muti’s deep understanding of Rossini and Mozart – represented here by the Overture to 'Semiramide' and the Sinfonia Concertante K 364 respectively – is also clearly evident in these early recordings. | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

A new and exquisite collection of German songs from counter-tenor Andreas Scholl, providing a perfect balance between text and music. The choice of music reflects Scholl’s belief that music need not be confined in performance to a particular voice type, as long as “the singer’s approach is true.” Scholl pulls off a bravura display in Schubert’s An Mignon, singing in both the counter-tenor and baritone register. The performance of these songs reveals an intuitive understanding between singer and accompanist, Andreas Scholl and Tamar Halperin. “Scholl is seeking out that place in German Lieder where folksong seems to transmute into art song: simplicity is all, and the Brahms songs are performed with virtually no interpretative gloss, allowing words to speak purely through the register and harmonic underlay of their setting.” BBC Music Magazine, January 2013 **** “Scholl brings the same commitment to the Classical and Romantic repertory as he does to Purcell and Dowland. His priorities, as he states on the packaging, are 'simplicity and sincerity'...As a recitalist, Scholl is less a story-teller than a weaver of spells, unleashing a fully conceived emotional state and sustaining it.” Gramophone Magazine, January 2013 “On one level Wanderer gives the listener abundant pleasure...Scholl’s diligent phrasing, purity of tone and lack of tricks bring...rewards...His piano partner, Tamar Halperin, is deft and poetic...Listen a little deeper, though, and limits to this pleasure emerge. Up at the top of Scholl’s register the more the voice seems trapped in a narrow pipe with no room for clear articulation of words or subtle changes of colour and weight.” The Times, 2nd November 2012 *** | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |
