Liszt Ferenc Chamber Orchestra, Budapest, János Rolla “The Eine kleine Nachtmusik Serenade is a favourite which will never be in any danger of oblivion. The Hungarian Ferenc Liszt Chamber Orchestra plays splendidly with an exceptionally alert style, but with a slightly heavier sound, a slightly solider style, than the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. Nevertheless, this is to point to minor differences in the two perfectly sensible approaches, not to suggest that either of the performances is in any way materially superior to the other. Another common factor of the two discs is their inclusion, along with the Nachtmusik, of Serenade No 6. The Divertimento here offers a degree of instrumental contrast, adding a few wind players to the basic orchestra of strings. Perhaps rather more of the built-in different sounds of these two groups could have been made in the present recording; but the Serenade remains an enchanting one. The Divertimento, also in D, lacks corresponding colour, but is nevertheless, quite a strong work; and the C minor Adagio and Fugue (an arrangement by Mozart himself from a piano duo) offers a very noticeably strong Adagio, and a fugue in which Mozart makes one of his few explorations – a successful one – of an earlier contrapuntal idiom.” Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010 | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |
