Now, in its 13th year, The Choral Pilgrimage stands as testament to Harry Christophers’ ongoing mission to bring a wide variety of sacred music back to the kind of buildings for which it was written. Thanks to the enthusiasm and support from audiences, the project continues to thrive and some 20,000 people are expected to attend concerts on this year’s tour. The 2013 tour began on 2nd March in Guildford Cathedral, and will take in a total of 34 concerts around the UK and Ireland before a concluding concert in Greyfriars Kirk, Edinburgh on the 26 October. Allegri’s Miserere is the single most famous piece of sacred music ever written. Although it is instantly recognisable with its haunting tones, mythology surrounds it, and this year’s Choral Pilgrimage allows Harry Christophers to explore its evolution and enduring appeal. James MacMillan dedicated his powerful and emotional setting of the Miserere to Harry Christophers and The Sixteen who premiered the work in 2010 and recorded it shortly afterwards. Alongside Allegri, MacMillan is one of the few composers to ever set the full Miserere to music. His exquisite version is one of the highlights of this year’s programme. Arguably the greatest composer of liturgical music of all time, Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina is often billed as ‘The Prince of Music’ and by some ‘The Saviour of Church Music’. Palestrina was a towering figure in Renaissance polyphony and shines out amongst the many great composers of the time for his immaculate craftsmanship and sheer output of works. The Sixteen have recorded three volumes of Palestrina’s works on their own label CORO, the latest of which includes repertoire from the 2013 tour and is included in this special collection. |

| | | Palestrina: Missa De beata virgine & Missa Ave Maria
In this album we find Westminster Cathedral Choir at the peak of their powers, performing masterpieces of the Italian Renaissance. These two magnificent and contrasting settings perfectly demonstrate why Palestrina has been acknowledged as the master of this repertoire from his lifetime to the present day. “For sheer sumptuousness of sound quality and clarity of text, the performance … ranks alongside the finest” Classic CD |

A celebration of the pioneering early music label Archiv, offering 55CDs ranged across the label’s entire 66-year history. Beautiful presentation, original jacket sleeves and documentation to the customary high standards of the label. In more ways than one, 2013 will be an Archiv Produktion year. The beloved Silver Label – the “Early Music Studio of Deutsche Grammophon”, as it was called for many years – is being revived in a big way, both in frontline and catalogue. In early April 2013 an event in Berlin is being held to mark this relaunch. New albums from choral group Tenebrae, Anna Prohaska and Giuliano Carmignola are being released in the first quarter to coincide with this occasion. Simple, striking and strong: in gleaming silver with the large blue Archiv Logo embossed on all sides. A large onsert on the top and back of the box details contents and is illustrated with a packshot showing contents. Original Jackets: starting with the austere yellow covers of the 1940s and 1950s gradually giving way to the great historical illustrations and images that featured up to the 1990s, when artists at last began to make an appearance (there were no artist photos in the 1950s!) The 180-page full-colour book has articles by journalist Nicholas Anderson, and “memoirs” by former directors of Archiv, Prof. Andreas Holschneider and Dr. Peter Czornyj, and Executive Producer, Marita Prohmann. The book features many rare photos from Archiv recording sessions, as well as other memorabilia. |

| | | Palestrina: Missa Ad coenam Agni & Eastertide motets
The Brabant Ensemble, better known for uncovering works by forgotten composers such as Dominique de Phinot, turns to a giant of the Renaissance—perhaps the most celebrated name of the period. Yet within Palestrina’s huge output there are many hidden gems, lacking both recordings and modern performing editions, and it is from among these that the ensemble’s director Stephen Rice has chosen the repertoire for this album. A Mass—Missa Ad coenam Agni, from Palestrina’s first book of Mass-settings—is included, plus antiphons, motets and five Eastertide Offertories. Each work is, as Stephen Rice states in his typically informative booklet notes, ‘a finely crafted addition to the liturgy’. The Brabant Ensemble brings a matchless blend of musicianship, scholarship and sensitive singing to this glorious music. “This disc might be renamed 100 Ways to Sing Alleluia, such is the celebratory nature of this collection of Eastertide offertories, antiphons and motets...The spirited Surrexit pastor bonus, its accompanying antiphon Regina caeli and the gradual Haec dies are sung with a full-voiced, beefy intensity that lifts the music away from mere polite polyphony and gives it a really exciting energy” The Observer, 31st March 2013 “[in the Regina coeli] the singers enliven the texture with their nuanced renderings of the marvellous contrapuntal connections, and the recording make the most of the double-choir effects in the final section.” BBC Music Magazine, May 2013 **** “The Brabants seem very much at home here” Gramophone Magazine, May 2013 |

“For all that the singing style with which Renaissance choral polyphony is performed these days has changed, Pro Cantione Antiqua does a great job. Their articulation could hardly be cleaner: every syllable is audible. Yet at no time does their care and studied enunciation substitute for expression and gentle love of the texts and their religious import.” MusicWeb International, 17th April 2013 |

| | | Palestrina Volume 3
A towering figure in Renaissance polyphony, Palestrina is arguably one of the greatest composers of Liturgical music of all time. Harry Christophers and The Sixteen continue their exploration of his work with a disc of music for the Easter period. Many of the works on this new recording celebrate the joyful part of Easter - the Resurrection - and the central mass on this disc is the wonderfully inspired Missa Regina caeli. The Mass is based on the well-known, immediately recognisable, plainchant Antiphon Regina caeli and the recording also includes the 8-voice motet of the same name. As with volumes 1 and 2 this disc also includes three of Palestrina’s settings of the Song of Songs alongside three offertories for the Easter period and the hymn Ad caenam agni providi. This disc would not be complete, however, without the exquisite 8-voice Stabat Mater - possibly Palestrina’s most famous piece in current times and a work that emphasises the other side of the Easter story - the agony and pain of the Crucifixion. A number of the works from Palestrina Volume 3 will feature in The Choral Pilgrimage 2013 alongside Miserere settings by Allegri and MacMillan (both of which are available on the CORO label). “[the Missa Regina Caeli is] given a polished, carefully paced and highly sensitive reading here. The singers invest as much emotional intensity in one of the two double-choir polyphonic settings of the antiphon as they do in the rest of the set.” Sunday Times, 17th February 2013 “The subject – the grieving mother at the foot of the cross – is all the more anguished in this unadorned double-choir setting, sung with full, pure tone and welcome momentum...The Sixteen have their own divine qualities, generously on display here.” The Observer, 17th March 2013 “The opening sequence, Stabat Mater, shows just what is admirable about this choir and the direction it receives...every ounce of implied drama, of unsettled feeling, and of deep reflection is brought to bear on a performance of superbly crafted form, nuanced dynamics, overlapping phrasing and effortless tuning...as The Sixteen get into this series they are warming to their task.” BBC Music Magazine, May 2013 **** “in this style of interpreting Palestrina, The Sixteen are sensitive and remarkably assured….The Sixteen's Palestrina cycle may just be a classic in the making.” Gramophone Magazine, May 2013 |

| | | MiserereA sequence of music for Lent, St Joseph, and the Annunciation
This release from the admired Westminster Cathedral Choir demonstrates the splendours of the liturgy in the at-once solemn and joyful period of Lent. Masterworks from the Renaissance—familiar from Westminster Cathedral Choir’s previous award-winning recordings—alternate with works by former organists of the Cathedral (all themselves masters of liturgical composition) and are linked by the plainchant which is at the spiritual heart of the music. Hearing the music like this in context—and recorded in the unique acoustic of the Cathedral—perfectly replicates the live experience for the listener. “This is beautifully devised programme, sung with ineffable perceptiveness by the Westminster choristers and recorded with utterly natural atmosphere by the Hyperion team: 79 minutes' worth of timeless reflection, which, far from giving up, anyone should possibly crave for Lent.” International Record Review, February 2013 “In purist terms accompanied by organ harmonisation is an anachronism...Does it work? Well, yes, because the choir is on excellent form and the recorded sound seems perfectly to capture a sense of place, of atmosphere. That's indefinable and therefore worth hearing. Furthermore, everything is of a piece: the performance of Renaissance piece might almost be described as lush...And yet the recital's unity of purpose is most convincing, even impressive” Gramophone Magazine, March 2013 “This is a disc for those who love the acoustic, the atmosphere and the musical traditions of the Roman Catholic Cathedral in London...This is a large choir, very good at big effects. The pacing and cohesion in the Agnus Dei of Palestrina's Missa Emendemus in Melius is accomplished and moving” BBC Music Magazine, April 2013 *** |

| | | A Brandenburg Christmas
Brandenburg Choir & Brandenburg Orchestra, Paul Dyer The Australian Brandeburg Orchestra get together each year to celebrate Christmas and Artistic Director Paul Dyer has committed some of the music created to disc. It contains the usual eclectic mix of repertoire, performed by these first class musicians in their unique way. Their previous release was universally critically acclaimed and we expect this one to generate similar reviews. “this seasonal offering reveals the quirky programming policy of artistic director Paul Dyer...I’m not sure anyone else has ever dared programme Angelus ad virginem and Billy Joel together, but the man who hymned his Uptown Girl shares stage space with Herbert Howells and Henry Purcell as well, and doesn’t seem unduly to suffer.” MusicWeb International, November 2012 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |
