The Choir of Westminster Abbey, James O’Donnell

Hyperion is delighted to present this latest CD from The Choir of Westminster Abbey under their inspirational director, James O’Donnell. They continue their exploration of the rich repertoire of the liturgy in its historical context in the Abbey with music for the Feast of the Ascension. Ascension Day is a particular moment of celebration within the annual round of Easter praise and is celebrated in glorious and triumphal language. The works recorded here represent a wide range of the best of liturgical music, starting from the intricate and joyful writing of the sixteenth-century composer Peter Philips and ending with fascinating and appealing pieces by living composers. Along the way are works from the great flowering of English cathedral music in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

“After seven years at the helm, James O'Donnell has made a formidable singing outfit of the Westminster Abbey Choir...The treble line is robust and thrilling, its soloist, Jacob Ewens, a sinuous star in Britten's Te Deum in E. The ensemble is well balanced in the polyphony of Philips's Ascendit Deus and confidently tuned in the awe-filled modernism of Gowers's Viri Galilei, while the organist, Robert Quinney, does more than his share in the dazzling accompaniments.” The Times, 26th April 2008 ****

“The choir of Westminster Abbey under James O'Donnell sing with the happy care which his choristers at the Cathedral used to bing to their work with hin. If the echo calls attention to itself at the start, the ears soon adjust. They are not going to complain with so much to enjoy. ” Gramophone Magazine, June 2008

Ensemble Faenza, Marco Horvat

'Baroque man' was faced with the same choices that face us today: choices between innovation and tradition, science and religion, the group and the individual, and so on; the examples are endless. Singing, as a source of elevation as much as of sensual pleasure, can make the soul of the sinner, like a fragile funambulist, topple this way or that, towards salvation on the one side or damnation on the other. The Jesuits, who were spiritual directors to many staunch believers among the aristocracy, had no qualms in using the sensual pleasures of the arts as instruments of salvation. To structure this recording Alpha used the method recommended by the Jesuit Philippe d'Angoumois in his Occupation continuelle en laquelle l'ame devote s'unit toujours avecque Dieu, a treatise written in 1618 for the use of ladies of the aristocracy. In this work he advises them to meditate each day of the week on a religious subject, in order to include the mysteries of spirituality in their daily routine. After a short catechism intended for children and a severe condemnation of the lewd song, the programme follows that path, with prayers on different themes for each day, thus creating an imaginary spiritual progression, as the soul seeks its salvation. In this 'mystical week', the soul moves from meditation on its sins (Monday) to contemplation of the glories of paradise (Sunday), from the fractures of the heart to inner healing, from primal Chaos to the Harmony of the spheres.

Cappella Mediterranea, Leonardo Garcia Alarcon

Celebrated throughout Europe as the foremost English composer of his time, Peter Philips (1561-1628) drew upon many different musical traditions to create a hugely expressive body of work which is still largely unknown apart from the Hyperion recordings of the early 1990s.This is the first recording of the madrigals. Leonardo Garcia Alarcon studied harpsichord and organ and was assistant to Gabriel Garrido for several years, going on to found the ensemble Cappella Mediterranea, with whom he has performed at many festivals. He teaches at the Geneva Conservatoire and carries out research into 17th century bass continuo playing.

The King's Singers, Concordia

Commemorating the 400th anniversary of the Gunpowder Plot, the King's Singers and Concordia illuminate the dangers of hearing Mass in secret, of conspiracy and downfall and of Protestant relief and great joy. Structured around Byrd's perfect 4-part Mass, the CD contains motets by Catholic composers, Protestant anthems celebrating the downfall of the plot and a commission from the British composer, Francis Pott, Master Tresham: His Ducke. A script, drawing on historic texts, reproduced in the CD booklet, uses the dramatised persona of Byrd to recreate the atmosphere of change and hope in the Jacobean court.

"this is a serious project, which, like the plotters themselves, has been skilfully executed. Strongly recommended" International Record Review
