Roman Rabinovich won the top prize at the 2008 Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition. At the age of 10 he made his debut with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra under Zubin Mehta, and he has performed at venues including the Leipzig Gerwandhaus, Wigmore Hall, Metropolitan Museum NYC and Paris’ Salle Cortot

On this recording, the French violinist Louise Chisson presents major violin sonatas of the 20th century. Whereas Poulenc’s and Prokofiev’s sonatas date from the Second World War, Leoš Janáček’s sonata was written in 1914, at the beginning of the First World War. The works evince Impressionist elements, stylistic ruptures and a preparation of Modernism. Against the backdrop of the dates of composition of these works, it is surprising that there is also scope for lightness and beauty besides death, gloom and despair. Together with the Georgian pianist Tamara Atschba, Chisson effortless manages to walk a tightrope and convey the most expressive emotions from the darkest years of the past century.

Following the success of Ceremony of Carols, Etherea Vocal Ensemble’s stunning debut album, Delos lost no time in producing their second effort. Containing several premiere performances, this album is an enchanting mix of mostly uncommon works for female choir by Holst, Beach, Rheinberger, Mendelssohn and Rossini. While all of these works are standouts among the limited female choir rep, Holst’s third group of Choral Hymns from the Rig Veda and the Two Eastern Pictures are particularly exotic, and ripe for rediscovery.
