Washington National Opera Orchestra and Chorus, Emmanuel Villaume (conductor) & Marta Domingo (stage director)

Director for TV - Brian Large

Marta Domingo’s famous production of this increasingly popular ‘operetta’; the only version of this particular ending to the piece available on DVD.

A valuable addition to Decca’s catalogue of Puccini DVDs. The piece is barely represented on DVD and Marta’s Domingo’s famous production is one of several recently which have started to make this work more a part of the standard operatic repertoire.

The operetta is famous for the beautiful aria ‘Doretta’s Dream’, used in the Merchant Ivory film of a Room with a View. However, the piece is in fact full of Puccini’s luscious melodies, albeit written in a lighter manner than usual.

Marta Domingo’s production was celebrated yet controversial for adapting the ending to reflect the more tragic outcome of the story; this is one of three endings Puccini wrote for the opera and Decca’s DVD will be the only available release of this version.

Excellent cast led by the beautiful Spanish soprano Ainhoa Arteta. American Marcus Haddock plays her suitor and the soprano Inva Mula is also notable in the role of Lisette.

EXTRAS: PBS introduction to the opera

“In her operetta-like staging, director Marta Domingo makes a feature of one of Puccini's revised endings. A high-quality cast brings persuasive qualities.” BBC Music Magazine, December 2009

Eva Turner (soprano) & Giovanni Martinelli (tenor)

London Philharmonic Orchestra & Chorus of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, John Barbirolli

This compact disc collection includes a number of important extracts from Puccini’s Turandot (sadly, complete recordings have not survived) from performances Barbirolli conducted at Covent Garden, and performed during the 1937 Coronation Season. These extracts are not only valuable for Barbirolli live ‘in action’ as it were, within the opera house, but also they provide us with the opportunity of hearing great singers in roles for which they became most famous. In this regard, the chance of hearing the legendary Dame Eva Turner as Turandot with Giovanni Martinelli as Calaf (his first appearance in the role), is indeed wholly exceptional.

These excerpts are taken from two performances at Covent Garden, heard on May 5th and 10th 1937 and the recorded selections are of broadly identical passages in the score, although those from the May 10th performance are slightly longer excerpts. The most important difference is the change of cast, in that in the May 10th performance Licia Albanese replaces Mafalda Favero as Liù. The atmosphere of live performances thus conveyed is tangible; apart from various audience and stage noises, and what may be the occasional catch of breath from Barbirolli, the undeniable frisson of Barbirolli’s masterly conducting in following the singers, especially in their fermate – notably at the end of Martinelli’s Nessun Dorma – is a prime example of his ability to empathise with them in every way. One might also note the appositeness of his tempi, always giving the singers time to sing and to phrase properly. The HMV studio recordings from April and June 1929 feature an Italian baritone, a contemporary of Martinelli, who did not enjoy a commensurate international fame, Giovanni Inghilleri – although, like Martinelli, he was a much admired singer, especially amongst his peers. From these recordings conducted by Sir John Barbirolli we can only regret that what was undoubtedly Manchester’s gain was the international world of opera’s loss.

“One of Britain's finest ever singers captured live in her signature role. The extensive Covent Garden Turandot excerpts with Martinelli sound slightly less clear than EMI's release, but the extras more than compensate.” BBC Music Magazine, July 2009

Puccini: La Rondine

Svetla Vassileva, Maya Dashuk, Fabio Sartori, Emanuele Giannino, Marzio Giossi, Fernando Ciuffo, Giorgio Berrugi, Andrea Patucelli, Polina Volfson, Alessandra Meozzi & Annunziata Vestri

Orchestra and Chorus of the Puccini Festival, Alberto Veronesi

Although one of his most consistently lyrical operas, La rondine (The Swallow) remains one of Puccini’s least known.

Dissatisfied with the result of his work, Puccini wrote three versions, with two different endings, and continued to make further revisions up to his death in 1924.

The innovative 2007 production at the Torre del Lago Giacomo Puccini Festival, presented here, is in effect a fourth version, which combines Acts I and II of the first version (1917), with Lorenzo Ferrero’s 1994 orchestration of parts of the Finale of Act III of the incomplete third version (1921), some of which had survived only in piano score, as well as Ruggero’s Act I romanza, ‘Parigi è la città dei desideri’, from the second version (1920).

“This live performance has plenty of energy. As Magda, Svetla Vassileva… rises to the challenge, and brings a considerable amount of feeling to the anguish of the final scene. As always the big ensemble in the dance-hall scene in Act 2 goes with a terrific swing, Alberto Veronesi leading the Puccini Festival Orchestra with obvious relish. Anyone with a keen interest in Puccini's work will want to hear this.” Gramophone Magazine, December 2009

Signore, ascolta! (from Turandot)

Tu che di gel sei cinta (from Turandot)

Vissi d'arte (from Tosca)

Adrianne Pieczonka's diary for the next few months makes it clear that this soprano, long celebrated for her Wagner and Strauss roles across the world, is now also in international demand for the Italian repertoire. She is singing Tosca in San Francisco, Desdemona in Munich,Amelia, Simon Boccanegra, at the Met alongside Plácido Domingo and Requiem at Carnegie Hall. None of which should be a surprise as she is one of the finest exponents of bel canto singing today. Pieczonka's foray into Puccini roles takes us from his debut Le Villi to the late Turandot. She can offer with ease the dramatic power necessary for the title roles of Madama Butterfly or Tosca, yet she still remains true to the lyrical ideal, whether in Lauretta's 'O mio babbino caro' or the soulful phrases of Mimì or Liù that are so beloved of the public.Tosca's prayer has become an acknowledged highpoint in her repertoire, though the same should now be said of the whole rôle itself. She may have famously borrowed the jewellery of Maria Callas to sing Tosca, but she needs no borrowed plumes, for as we hear on this CD,Adrianne Pieczonka has emerged as a Puccini singer of the first rank.

"Domingo was lucky to have a wonderful Sieglinde in the lovely Canadian soprano Adrianne Pieczonka, who brought a gleaming voice, affecting vulnerability and exciting sensuality to her performance." New York Times

"The company's "Tosca" has been around… But Tosca is new: Adrianne Pieczonka sang the role for the first time Saturday. The Canadian soprano will surely be singing it for a long time. She was radiant." LA Times

“Canadian soprano Adrianne Pieczonka gives an impressive display of her versatility in this formidably wide-ranging collection of Puccini arias. …in every item she conveys a dramatic portrait of each heroine. …in Butterfly's two big numbers…she demonstrates her full calibre, with fine detail and subtle shading in "Un bel dì" and offering a formidable climax in the suicide aria. Here as elsewhere she sings with splendid projection with firmly held top notes, fine and steady.” Gramophone Magazine, December 2009

Live Recording from The Teatro La Fenice, Venice 2008

Fiorenza Cedolins (Magda), Fernando Portari (Ruggero), Sandra Pastrana (Lisette), Emanuele Giannino (Prunier), Stefano Antonucci (Ramblado)

Orchestra and Chorus of The Teatro La Fenice, Carlo Rizzi (conductor) & Graham Vick (director)

Set Design by Peter J. Davison & Costume Design by Sue Wilmington.

Venice 2008. This year’s schedule at La Fenice includes a special treat for opera-goers: a production of Puccini’s seldom-performed opera: “La Rondine” (The Swallow). And now this rarity can also be rediscovered on Blu-Ray. The score of the operetta-like threeact “lyrical comedy”, which tells the story of the love between Magda and Ruggero, must be one of Puccini’s most subtle creations. The light, bubbling music reveals levels of artistry and complexity that few composers have ever matched. Milan-born conductor Carlo Rizzi has worked with the world’s leading orchestras since 1982 – from Los Angeles and Chicago to Zurich, Milan and Salzburg, where he conducted a much-acclaimed production of “La Traviata” with Anna Netrebko and Rolando Villazón in 2005. Graham Vick, a highly experienced opera director, has directed who also is something of a “Britpop” enthusiast, has directed productions at the New York Met, Vienna State Opera, Bavarian State Opera and the Royal Opera House, London. In Glyndebourne, where he was director of productions from 1994 to 2000, he was responsible, amongst other things, for staging “Così fan tutte”, “Don Giovanni” and “Pélleas et Mélisande”.

“…there's much to admire in Vick's carefully planned production, especially in a lively Act II dance-hall scene and in the sophisticated badinage of Act I, set in Magda's salon. Musically, Carlo Rizzi is in his element…” BBC Music Magazine, January 2009 ***
