Three Shakespeare Songs

Ensemble Vocal Aedes, Mathieu Romano (direction)

The first part in a series of four – two secular and two sacred – this recording sets out to explore different facets of a cappella choral music from the 20th and 21st centuries. Volume 1 takes its name from one of the nine cycles of secular music presented here. In this panorama of works, the word, through poetry, is central to musical creation; it becomes the subject of play, with the composers appropriating it and translating it into music. Alongside famous cycles from the repertoire, Ens Aedes have chosen to record a work commissioned by them from Philippe Hersant, as well as several cycles by other composers who are still active.

These cycles set words by William Shakespeare, Joseph von Eichendorff and Paul Éluard; the listener will also discover (or rediscover) poems by Charles d’Orléans, Louise Labé and Henry Felix.

Pelimannit, Op. 1

Pekka Kuusisto (violin) & Paavali Jumppanen (piano)

This new recording features the complete works for violin and piano by iconic Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautaavara (b. 1928), including world premières.

The performers are two of the most fascinating talents from Finland who are know for a fresh approach: violinist Pekka Kuusisto (“may be the best thing to happen to classical music in years” – The Guardian) and pianist Paavali Jumppanen (“immense power and an extraordinary range of colours” – The New York Times), who, for Deutsche Grammophon, made acclaimed recordings of Pierre Boulez’s Complete Piano Sonatas.

This CD also includes Rautavaara's opus 1, the piano suite Pelimannit (The Fiddlers), which is based on traditional polska tunes for the fiddle. Following Pekka Kuusisto's concept, this recording presents the original violin tunes, alternating with the respective movements from Rautavaara's piano suite.

“That [Dithyrambos] should have such an effect is partly a tribute to the spirited musicianship of Pekka Kuusisto and Paavali Jumppanen. If Kuusisto ultimately emerges as the star, that's partly because the piano writing in the more recent pieces gives him a lot less scope than Dithyrambos or Pelimannit. But in those earlier scores he's splendidly alert and expressive.” BBC Music Magazine, September 2011 ****

“Kuusisto and Jumppanen are persuasive executants - Rautavaara's challenging technical demands are thrown off with elan...Where the performers are at their best is in The Fiddlers, Rautavaara's vivacious folk-music piano suite (1952), delivered in lively and fully competitive fashion” Gramophone Magazine, October 2011

“Nostalgia envelops “Lost Landscapes” (2005), in which Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara reflects on places of significance to him. Reminiscences of New York trigger hustle and bustle, and listeners accustomed to his mystical vistas will find many other facets to his creative output in this superbly played selection of his violin and piano works.” The Telegraph, 14th July 2011 ****

Lighting Designer: Juha Westman

Choreographer: Ari Numminen

This DVD features the three-act opera Aleksis Kivi (1996) by iconic Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara who also wrote the libretto.

The opera tells the story of Finland’s national author Aleksis Kivi (1834-1872) and draws on many of Kivi’s own poems and texts. Aleksis Kivi wrote the first significant novel in the Finnish language (“Seven Brothers”), but during his short lifetime he suffered from moral and artistic condemnation by literary rivals. He died, insane and impoverished, at age 38.

This Finnish National Opera production is conducted by Mikko Franck and staged by Pekka Milonoff and features Jorma Hynninen in the lead role. Hynninen, upon whose request the opera was written, already headed the casts at the opera’s world première performance in 1997, as well as for the acclaimed première CD recording in 2002 (released on Ondine).

Rautavaara: Kaivos (The Mine)

Rautavaara: Kaivos (The Mine)

World première recording for CD

Hannu Niemelä (Simon), Johanna RusanenKartano (Ira), Jorma Hynninen (Commissar) Jaakko Kortekangas (Priest), Mati Turi (Marko), Petri Pussila (Vanha) & Tuomas Katajala (A miner)

Kaivos Chorus & Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra, Hannu Lintu

This new release features the three-act opera Kaivos (The Mine, 1962) by Einojuhani Rautavaara. The patriarch of Finnish composers wrote this, his first opera, in 1957–62 and today considers it, “perhaps the best opera I have ever written, a real thriller whose underlying theme – that a human being defines himself through his choices – is nevertheless universal.”

This CD release represents an apogee in the work’s exceptional history: the opera’s underlying thematic allusions to the 1956 Hungarian uprising impeded a staged performance in Finland, a neighboring country of the then Soviet Union. Instead, a Finnish TV production was broadcast in 1963. The first live (concert) performance in Tampere (Finland) in September 2010 featured the same cast and performers as this première CD recording.

Legendary baritone Jorma Hynninen (lead role ‘Commissar’), who celebrates his 70th anniversary in 2011, has starred in a number of Finnish operas since the 1970s to great international success, including at the MET in New York.

Acclaimed conductor Hannu Lintu leads the reputed Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra on this disc.

Disc also includes complete synopsis, libretto and English translation.

“The Mine of the title is a microcosm of both society and the individual soul - and its inhabitants are cast from strength. The great Jorma Hynninen is in untarnished voice as the dictator figure, The Commissar; the bass Hannu Niemala is a dark Simon...and the mezzo-tinted soprano Johanna Rusanen-Kartano a powerful Ira, his compromised lover.” BBC Music Magazine, May 2011 *****

“Any cast willing to take on this dauntingly unglamorous music, and able to do so with such authority, commands rather more than respect. There is certainly some strain in the singing but also a compelling quota of dramatic truth and passion. Hannu Lintu's belief in the work shines through and he brings the Tampere Philharmonic with him undaunted...The recording fills a major gap in the Ruatavaara discography and fills it with distinction.” Gramophone Magazine, June 2011

Rautavaara - Before The Icons & A Tapestry Of Life

Rautavaara - Before The Icons & A Tapestry Of Life

Rautavaara:

Before the Icons

A Tapestry of Life

These works are both presented here in their world première recording

Einojuhani Rautavaara is recognized as one of the most notable Finnish composers after Jean Sibelius. His recordings on Ondine have been bestsellers and garnered numerous awards (including a 1997 Grammy nomination for Angel of Light).

This new recording features the mystical composer’s latest orchestral works, two poignant testimonies of a mature artistic, spiritual and human personality.

The uplifting orchestral work Before the Icons (2005) is based on the earlier piano cycle Icons (1955) and therefore spans over Rautavaara’s entire career. The work drew its inspiration from a book of Orthodox icons.

Rautavaara wrote A Tapestry of Life in 2007 after an almost miraculous recovery from an acute illness. “Few contemporary composers are as skilled (…) in using tonality without compromise,” wrote the New Zealand Herald, upon its premiere.

Leif Segerstam and the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra build on their long-time pedigrees of performing their compatriot’s music.

“The music still retains something of a 1950s feeling...Segerstam and the excellent Helsinki players provide appropriately atmospheric support...there's no doubt about the beauty of the soundworlds [Rautavaara] creates” BBC Music Magazine, September 2010 *****

“Rautavaara's musical voice remains fully audible although British listeners may hear resonances in places of Vaughan Williams-like modality.” Gramophone Magazine, August 2010

YL Male Voice Choir & Talla Vocal Ensemble, Pasi Hyökki & Matti Hyökki

This release marks the culmination of the 80th birthday celebrations for Ondine's best-selling omposer, Einojuhani Rautavaara, following a successful campaign on his back catalogue. Ondine has had a long and fruitful association with the Finnish cult composer since the late 1980s, having recorded the premières of many of his works and garnering many awards along the way, including a Grammy nomination for his Angel of Light (Symphony No. 7). This new recording features his complete works for male choir - one of the most popular genres in this composer's artistic output. The two ensembles are the YL Male Voice Choir (Helsinki University Choir), one of the world's most prominent male voice choirs and the commissioner and dedicatee of most of Rautavaara's (and also Jean Sibelius') works for male voice choir. Only recently the Choir was featured on the critically acclaimed recording of Sibelius' Kullervo, along with the Talla Vocal Ensemble, a smaller group of 10 singers originally founded within the YL Choir.

“…so this comprehensive and magnificently sung new collection has the field to itself.” Gramophone Magazine, January 2009

“Especially striking, its tenor line soaring over a quasi-orchestral vocal fabric, is the literary Leaves are Leaves; but finer still are the Four Alexis Kivi Songs (1998-2005), from his opera about Finland's equivalent of Pushkin and Burns, the main solo 'Melancholy' movingly underpinned by YL's awesomely dark, firm basses.” BBC Music Magazine, March 2009 *****

“YL divide up the works between the main body and their 10-man offshoot, the Talla Vocal Ensemble – the latter, incidentally, are superb in the two TS Eliot Preludes (1956, rev 1967).
Ondine's recording is rich, with great presence, matched by singing of urgency and vividness.
And YL and Talla's interpretations have impetus and power, as in the half-hour-long A Book ofLife (1972), which is split between the two groups (as are the Four Serenades, 1978), setting 11 poems – including texts by Rilke, Rimbaud, Goethe, Emily Dickinson and Whitman – in five languages.
The greater textural palette attained through using two differently sized choirs is more akin to that found in some early-music recordings. Perhaps there's a loss of intimacy and a certain dreamy quality – for instance in the Psalms (1968-71) or some of the folksong arrangements.
But this is a small price to pay for the gains which, for collectors of Rautavaara, will chiefly be the quartets of songs to poems by Aleksis Kivi (arr 2005) or from the opera Rasputin (arr 2006), not otherwise issued.”
