Simon Keenlyside (baritone) & Malcolm Martineau (piano)

He was already noted as a recitalist, and “a talent to cherish” as far back as 1989. Since appearing in La Scala in 1998 he has performed recitals all over the world, his repertoire including: Schubert, Schumann, Strauss, Brahms, Fauré, Wolf and Mahler. He has also recorded many English songs. Gramophone describe him as the finest baritone singer of Lieder this country has ever produced.

In Simon's own words “I've probably got around 15 years, and think I can see the end of the tunnel. I've done most of the roles that suit me and some, like Papageno, I'll never want to drop…” “In Wagner I shan't go beyond Wolfram in Tannhauser. I know there's Beckmesser, but I'm afraid it's not a role that excites or fascinates me. I'll never get tired of the stand-and-sing roles like Germont in Traviata and Posa in Don Carlos - parts where you really have to act with your voice and pin the audience to their seats with inflexion, nuance and colour. I probably shan't sing Billy Budd again… and am moving down from Pelleas to Golaud. The two new roles I'm most excited about are Wozzeck and Rigoletto, which are both great theatre and call on a huge palette of colours. Wozzeck in particular, is a mountain any baritone wants to climb…”

“The opening Schubert group demonstrates the baritone's natural and unaffected delivery - an ability to hold words and notes together in one single gesture - and his finely tuned vocalism, founded on a lightly rounded but always expressive tone. He sounds equally at ease in the French half of the programme. ...'En sourdine' flows beautifully...and the light humour of 'Le Papillon et la Fleur', Fauré's Op. 1 No. 1, is flawlessly conveyed in Martineau's enchantingly lithe pianism.” BBC Music Magazine, December 2009

“you’re being invited to step into a more gently nuanced and delicately observed world, where the expressive weight of each phrase is being judged to perfection, with not a gram of emotional excess...this is such a successful document of the occasion that you might honestly end up feeling that you were [there]… and can be again, and again.” Andrew McGregor, bbc.co.uk, 22nd December 2009

“Hugo Wolf is at his most welcoming in "Der Knabe und das Immelein" and Keenlyside is at his most responsive in "An die Geliebte". Keenlyside is at his best in "Notre amour" - and very French. In… Malcolm Martineau: he has a collaborator in whom the life of texts as well as the music is experienced and communicated unfailingly.” Gramophone Magazine, November 2009

Quattro Notturni

De la nuit (1971)

Ciro Longobardi (piano)

Salvatore Sciarrino, the most popular Italian contemporary composer, takes inspiration from Maurice Ravel to compose a series of Notturni, pieces inspired by the night. Sciarrino's inspiration was Gaspard de la nuit, composed in 1908 and inspired by the poetry of Aloysius Bertrand. Ravel's purpose was to create a difficult piece, a parody of romanticism, which even now constitutes a real test of pianists. Sciarrino composed De la Nuit in 1971.

plus three improvisations (#2, 3 & 7) by Matthew Barley and Julian Joseph

Matthew Barley (cello) & Julian Joseph (piano)

Following their critically acclaimed performances earlier this year at King's Place, these studio recordings capture some truly extraordinary musical creations from two world-class performers and improvisers.

“This set of originals, improvisations and takes on pieces by everyone from Jobim to Ravel are informed, inventive and defy all predictions as to what’s coming next. The title track, evolving from a wonky blues riff into a kind of evocation of Steve Reich jamming with McCoy Tyner at the Penguin Cafe, is outstanding.” BBC Music Magazine

Vladimir Ashkenazy & Vovka Ashkenazy (pianos)

One of the twentieth century's greatest pianists returns to the piano with a disc of rarely recorded French Impressionist duets with his son Vovka Ashkenazy.

“Ashkenazy père et fils… clearly having much fun, especially in Rapsodie espagnol, drawing a wide range of colour, and some wonderfully delicate shading.” BBC Music Magazine, November 2009 ***

“Father and son join forces here with winning élan. Vladimir Ashkenazy is one of the great pianists of modern times, with a legacy of landmark solo and concerto recordings to challenge anybody’s. His son Vovka has inherited the genes and, on disc, has collaborated in performances of chamber music by Tchaikovsky, Arensky, Poulenc and Ravel.” The Telegraph, 11th August 2009 ****

“Early 20th-century repertoire has often brought out the best in Vladimir as pianist and conductor, and he certainly plays with love here. Harnessed to their Steinways, father and son display exceptionally close rapport, thinking and breathing as one in music that requires almost inhuman co-ordination to do its magic full justice. No note is out of place, no texture muddy. They’re at their very best in Ravel’s La Valse transcription and the Feria finale of Rapsodie espagnole, where they spray the listener with kaleidoscopic textures and modulate dynamics with the punch of master dramatists.” The Times, 7th August 2009 ****

Just 10 months ago we released the first volume in the new Martha Argerich Collection (the solo recodings). Over 10,000 boxes of the 8-CD set have been sold since then.

Here now is Volume 2 – the Concerto Recordings, on 7 CDs, comprising all of her concerto recordings with Deutsche Grammophon, from her scintillating début playing Prokofiev and Ravel under Claudio Abbado in 1967 to her most recent collaboration with the same conductor in 2004. In between come classic recordings of Chopin, Liszt, Tchaikovsky and Beethoven with Charles Dutoit, Mstislav Rostropovich and Giuseppe Sinopoli, as well as a memorable collaboration with Gidon Kremer (in Mendelssohn) and dazzling virtuosity in Haydn and Shostakovich.

The cover is still more alluring, the contents equally fascinating, and the packaging just as attractive – with original LP-cover artwork, new liner notes (by Jed Distler again) and rare photos. The recordings have been newly mastered for this release.

This box will be followed up by one more to include Martha Argerich’s complete Chamber Ensemble recordings for Deutsche Grammophon (2010).

“Some graceless Debussy and Ravel excepted, everything else offered by this Dutch quartet is excellently done. Brahms's Clarinet Quintet here sounds truly haunting.” BBC Music Magazine, March 2010 ****
