| | | Sarah Nemtanu: Gypsic
Sarah Nemtanu (violin), Chilly Gonzales (piano, organ farfisa, drum, percussion), Romain Descharmes (piano), Lyodoh Kaneko (solo), Guillaume Barli, Pierre Fouchenneret, Tiphaine Gaigne (first violins), Virginie Buscail, Young-Eun Koo, Alexandra Jouannie, Nathalie Crambes (second violins), Lise Berthaud, Delphine Tissot (violas), Christophe Morin, Jérôme Lefranc (cellos), Maria Chirokoliyska (double bass), Armand Amar (triangle) & Lurie Morar (cimbalom) Aurélien Azan Zielinski ‘Gypsic’ is the very first recording of violinist Sarah Nemtanu who brings a subtle touch of Balkanese extravagance to classical masterpieces from Ravel and Enesco. Sarah Nemtanu is one of today’s leading violinists and her career to date commands respect, including being first violin solo with the Orchestre National de France and having performed with many of the most renowned orchestras in the world. For this ambitious recording, Romanian-born Sarah Nemtanu chose to perform pieces from the classical repertoire in arrangements bringing out their Balkan fibre. On this challenging recording Sarah Nemtanu teams up with the influential virtuoso pianist, electro megalomaniac and all-round entertainer Chilly Gonzales who brings his experience in piano improvisations and familiarity with electronic music to arrange classical masterpieces from Ravel and Enesco among others. This is a very ‘gypsic’ recording in between music and rhythmic, a surprising mixture, impressive in its respect and precision, and delightful in its insubordination to form and genre. The biggest challenge on this album was undoubtedly to rework the Blues from Maurice Ravel’s Violin Sonata, inspired here by rhythmic ethio-jazz, a blend of jazz and the traditional music of Ethiopian azmari minstrels. | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | Usually despatched in 3 - 4 working days. Together with the orchestra lyricism and sonorous harmonies are expertly teased out. Picture format DVD: NTSC 16:9 Sounds formats DVD: PCM Stereo, DD 5.1, DTS 5.1 Region code: 0 Booklet notes: English, German, French Running time: 81 min FSK: 0 “The undoubted highlight of Jurowski's concert is a translucent performance of Strauss's Metamorphosen. The ebb and flow is exquisite, and the benefits of having a true chamber orchestra, rather than simply a reduced orchestral string section. The lines are individually moulded, yet never lose sight of the fluid whole.” BBC Music Magazine, September 2010 *** | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

| | | Ravel: Complete Piano Solo Works
Abdel Rahman El Bacha (piano) This two-disc Hybrid SACD set of the complete works for solo piano by Maurice Ravel, features the highly-regarded Libyan born virtuoso Abdel Rahman el Bacha. Abdel Rahman el Bacha has lived in France for the last 30 years and during this time has made many critically-acclaimed recordings for the French label Forlane, including an award-winning CD of the early works of Sergei Prokofiev. Born in Beirut in 1958 Abdel Rahman el Bacha moved to France at the age of 16 to study at the Paris Conservatiore. In 1978, when only 19, he won the Queen Elisabeth of Belgium Piano Competition by a unanimous judgment. In 1983, his first recording for the label Forlane, “Early Works by Prokofiev”, was awarded the "Grand Prix de l'Académie Charles Cros". For the same label he has recorded 3 Concertos by Bach, Ravel's 2 Concertos and works by Schumann, Ravel and Schubert. Alongside a series of critically acclaimed recordings of the complete piano sonatas of Beethoven, he has also released Chopin's complete solo piano works on 12 CDs in chronological order. Maurice Ravel was trained as a pianist, and although he is much better known as a composer of some of the greatest orchestral music of the first part of the 20th century, he left behind a significant number of pieces for solo piano. He later transcribed several of these, notably the Pavane pour une infante défunte and Valses nobles et sentimentales, for larger forces. | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |
