Russian composer who started out as a Navel Officer but went on to become Professor of Composition at the St Petersburg Conservatoire where he taught many important composers. As a member of 'The Five' he championed the cause of a Russian nationalistic style and wrote the first symphony by a Russian composer. He was a master of orchestration and his The Principles of Orchestration remains an important textbook. Capriccio Espagnole and Schehrazade are amongst his most popular works, but he also wrote operas, choral works and songs.
