Celibidache was without question one of the most important and original conductors in recent memory. He was a perfectionist who disliked what he perceived to be the synthetic sounds created in the modern recording studio, preferring the immediacy of the concert platform and the interaction with a live audience. The Celibidache series celebrates the extraordinary legacy of his collaboration with the Müncher Philharmoniker, portraying the excitement and atmosphere of their live performances. Celibidache was Musical Director of the Müncher Philharmoniker between 1979 and his death in 1996. Heavily influenced by Buddhism, he is renowned for creating exceptional and life-altering experiences for his audiences through his perfect balancing of sonic and spatial considerations. These recordings are unique to EMI Classics and were painstakingly mastered to retain and recreate the vibrancy and impact of Celibidache and the Müncher Philharmoniker’s live performances. | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

Florian Boesch’s debut disc on ONYX was the highly acclaimed Schumann Heine Lieder (ONYX4041), and he again teams up with Malcolm Martineau for the journey through the bleak and wintry landscape of Schubert’s Winterreise. Composed in 1827, work on the settings of Wilhem Muller made Schubert agitated and disturbed according to friends. Indeed the songs shocked his friends when first heard – so powerful is the emotional content of the music that it still has the ability to shock and move the listener. The journey starts with ‘Goodnight’, as our traveller walks away from us into the moonlit snowy landscape. At the end of the cycle ‘The Signpost’ he takes the path to his death. “all the more powerful for being so admirably reined-in. Boesch's methodology has often been described as expressionist, though in this instance he's less overtly declamatory than you might expect...The hallucinatory quality of his interpretation is matched by a corresponding vividness in Martineau's playing...It makes for very difficult listening, but is unquestionably superb.” The Guardian, 10th November 2011 ***** “Perhaps the distinguishing feature of this version is the accompaniment of Malcolm Martineau, who contrives to bring some new insight to every single song, without ever sounding mannered...Florian Boesch, the possessor of a fine but not especially distinctive voice, takes his cue from him...and the collaboration is complete...The whole cycle moves into silence in a way that I have not heard before.” BBC Music Magazine, January 2012 ***** “Boesch's baritone, rich, most of the time quiet or very quiet, and always in tune, has, here and throughout this performance, a brooding thoughtfulness, as if he were discovering for himself and for the first time the depths of desolation....Boesch's and Martineau's is a coherent and agonising narrative, giving the listener the sense of a real, cold, protracted journey for heartbroken resolve to a desolate longing.” International Record Review, January 2012 “this new version by Florian Boesch and Malcolm Martineau is inspired and quite unforgettable. It has total spontaneity, a superbly balanced, totally natural recording, with the pianist making a perfect partnership with the singer...What is remarkable in a performance of this calibre is that the sadness which permeates all these songs....is always affecting.I cannot recommend this CD too highly.” Gramophone Magazine, March 2012 “and vivid account by the Austrian Florian Boesch. It is very much a joint achievement. Malcolm Martineau is an absolutely equal partner, a sorrowing, desolate, angry participant at every moment in the cycle...an exceptionally free, imaginative and dramatic interpretation.” Sunday Times, 19th February 2012 “an impressive traversal of Schubert’s winter journey. Florian Boesch’s singing is consistently involving and interesting and the support he receives from Malcolm Martineau is first class. Boesch enters fully into every song and it’s clear that he’s delving below the surface of the music. This is a fine addition to the discography of this engrossing song cycle.” MusicWeb International, June 2012 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Bruckner: Symphony No. 9
Recorded 17th August 1960. “Conducting is only a means to an end, never an end in itself. Making music is everything – and the less conducting draws attention to itself, the more beautiful the music will be and truly stir our hearts”. Joseph Keilberth joined the Karlsruhe Staatstheater at the age of seventeen as a répétiteur. Ten years later he became general music director, the youngest at the time in Germany. On Furtwängler’s recommendation he was appointed chief conductor of the German Philharmonic Orchestra of Prague for the war years, moving to the Dresden State Opera (then in the Russian zone) in 1945. He remained in that position until 1950, by which time he had achieved a bizarre reunion with his Prague orchestra, now renamed the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra and newly resident in that town in western Germany. Keilberth was a great Wagnerian conductor and recorded the first-ever stereo Ring – now available as a celebrated Testament release in a 14-CD set – SBT141412. If both the Bruckner and the Schubert overture which opened this 1960 concert were Keilberth regulars, the Berg Violin Concerto was a newcomer to his repertoire that became a personal favourite; it was also his first-ever Berg score. He prepared it for the first time in December 1955 for a Hamburg State Opera concert with André Gertler. “It’s really coming together now”, he noted, “but much still sounds as if it’s wrong”. A little later he wrote to his son Thomas: “I’m pleased that the Berg Concerto now means more to you. For me, it’s the only 12-tone work that I like”. Then, by the 1965/66 season, Keilberth was replying to a questionnaire about his “Ten 20thcentury Masterworks of Music”. The Berg Concerto had become his No.2 choice, just ahead of Stravinsky’s Dumbarton Oaks but losing out to Hindemith’s Mathis der Maler Symphony. | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

The present collection of Schubert Lieder contains the only recording of a live concert by Christoph Prégardien. The CD contains Lieder recorded in two concerts during 2003 and 2006 when Prégardien was at the peak of his vocal career. After Songs of love & death this CD is the second recording with Christoph Prégardien accompanied by guitar. The accompaniment of the Romantic Lied by guitar was well accepted by Schubert’s contemporaries and the guitar itself was pretty en vogue in these times. In Prégardien’s opinion Schubert’s Lieder are closely connected with the intimate sound of the guitar. Tilman Hoppstock has selected 12 Lieder of Winterreise and five others and arranged them for his instrument. “With its different weight, measure and dynamic voicing, the guitar simply cannot recreate Schubert's subtle patterning of keyboard-conceived inflection and accenting...The guitar comes into its own, though, in the bleak, hurdy-gurdy accompaniment of 'Der Leiermann'. Prégardien's singing is just as intelligent and sentient as ever.” BBC Music Magazine, December 2011 *** | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

This 6CD set contains 100 tracks from the most familiar and best-loved works by the Austrian composer Franz Schubert (1797–1828), performed by many of the world’s leading instrumentalists, singers, orchestras and conductors. CD 1 includes extracts from six of Schubert’s nine symphonies, including the famous ‘Unfinished’ Symphony (No.8) and the ‘Great’ C major Symphony (No.9). Also heard here are parts of the incidental music Schubert wrote for the play Rosamunde that has now become established as a firm concert favourite away from the theatre. CD 2 covers Schubert’s works for the piano, beginning with the infectiously lively ‘Marche militaire No.1 in D’ and followed by some of his best known short works, including some Moments musicaux and various German Dances and Impromptus. The disc ends with a complete performance of his towering masterpiece for the piano, the Wanderer Fantasy Schubert effectively established German Lied as a new art form in the 19th century. He was a master of melody and found his perfect medium in his songs. CDs 3 and 4 bring us some of the best-known of Schubert’s songs, including items from his three great song cycles: Die schöne Müllerin, Winterreise and Schwanengesang. In CD 5 we hear some of the outstanding chamber music that Schubert managed to find time to write during his brief life, beginning with a part of the much-loved Piano Quintet in A known as ‘The Trout’ (‘Die Forelle’) because it includes a set of variations on the tune of one of Schubert’s most familiar songs of the same name. CD 6 presents extracts from some of Schubert’s many sacred choral works, which include six complete masses as well as settings of other texts such as the Stabat Mater, various Kyries and the delightful ‘Gott ist mein Hirt’ (‘The Lord is my Shepherd’). | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Fantasies for Bassoon
Chandos signed Karen Geoghegan as an exclusive artist in 2007 following her appearance on BBC TV’s Classical Star programme. This is her fifth recording with the label, and the expressive maturity and sensitivity of her playing have quickly cemented her status as a rising star, Gramophone writing: ‘Name five internationally famous bassoon soloists. Archie Camden, Gwydion Brooke and, er, that’s it. Except I think we shall soon be adding the name of Karen Geoghegan to the roll call.’ On this disc, she is accompanied by Philip Edward Fisher in works by some of the greatest composers of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries: Schubert, Schumann, Spohr, Rachmaninoff, and Elgar. Yet, with a single exception, namely the Sonata in E flat by Gustav Schreck, none of the works recorded here were originally composed for the bassoon. One of Rachmaninoff’s best-loved short pieces, the Vocalise was written for wordless voice and piano. Demonstrating the capacities of the voice as a pure instrument, this work is a prime example of the power of melody without the need for words. In this arrangement, the bassoon takes on the role of ‘wordless voice’, which shows off the instrument’s great lyrical qualities to perfection, as does Elgar’s Salut d’amour. Schumann’s Fantasiestücke was originally composed for clarinet and piano, its three pieces played without a break, with each subsequent piece taking up and developing melodic ideas from the preceding one. The Sonata in A minor, D 821 by Schubert, which remained unpublished and unperformed for decades after his death, is an emotionally complex work, its moods moving from deep melancholy to excited ebullience. “the most substantial music comes in the transcription of Schubert's Arpeggione Sonata...It would be foolish to expect the bassoon to offer the emotional depth and richness of tone that can be accommodated on a string instrument, but Karen Geoghegan certainly convinces with the melancholic hue of the first movement.” BBC Music Magazine, February 2012 **** “Geoghegan is probably the best advocate the instrument could have: even though parts of the 'Arpeggione' Sonata (usually heard on cello or viola) don't quite work on the bassoon, as the ear adjusts her exemplary musicianship comes through and triumphs...There's a wonderfully natural quality to Geoghegan's phrasing and expression - especially in the Schumann - and she is partnered adeptly at all times by Philip Edward Fisher.” Classic FM Magazine, December 2011 **** “There is no clowning here. If anything, the bassoon lends a pleasant dolefulness to the music played on this CD...Even the cello...is not as consistently mellow as a bassoon, when it is played by a musician on Geoghegan's level.” International Record Review, January 2012 | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |
