| | | Schubert: Moments Musicaux & Sonata, D850
Pianist Valery Afanassiev - renowned for his strikingly individual and deeply introspective interpretations of the music of Franz Schubert - has paired two often extrovert works by the composer: the set of six Moments Musicaux and the Sonata in D major, D850. Recorded in September 2010 at the Auditorio Radiotelevisione Svizzera, Lugano, this is ECM’s second Schubert recording by the Moscow-born pianist. Composed from 1823 to 1827, the year before the composer’s premature death, the Moments Musicaux brim with song and dance, as well as Schubert’s characteristic mood swings from major to minor, from light to dark. The Sonata D850, written in 1825, is one of Schubert’s most ebullient piano sonatas - with yodelling-like melodies, simulated horn calls and strongly syncopated rhythms - but like so many works by this composer, there are passages with an air of nostalgia and emotional ambiguity. Valery Afanassiev previously released on ECM New Series a live recording of Schubert’s final Sonata (in B flat major, D. 960) performed at the 1986 Lockenhaus Festival that has become a connoisseur’s favourite (4627072). A pupil of Emil Gilels at the Moscow Conservatory, Afanassiev’s international career took off after he won the 1972 Queen Elisabeth Piano Competition in Brussels. His recordings feature music by Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Schumann, Mussorgsky and Chopin, as well as Schubert. His chamber music partners have included Gidon Kremer and Mischa Maisky. He also has a second career as a writer - of novels and plays - and has written intriguing liner notes for this album that mark him out as a renaissance man. “The Russian-born pianist, who is also a novelist, adorns this recording with eclectic literary musings that at first seem an indulgent collision of references and philosophical assertion...Yet his words help us understand how he approaches this art from a Romanticist’s, not a classicist’s, point of view.” Sunday Times, 21st October 2012 | | | (Sorry, download not available in your country) | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |

Sir George Solti, one of the greatest conductors of our day, died on 5th September 1997. The definitive profile “Solti – The making of a Maestro”, made during the last year of his life, captures the amazing energy and passion for music of this remarkable man. Filmed with Solti in Budapest, Bavaria, Chicago and London, the documentary charts his exceptional musical journey; from his early years in Hungary to his accalaimed leadership of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. A film by renowned director Peter Maniura, coproduced with the BBC. Solti was a most energetic conductor in both rehearsal and performance, with a frequently sharp and stabbing conducting style. At the same time he was also capable of producing the most beautiful legato playing. No Solti recording is without some point of interest: his stature as one of the most outstanding conductors of the twentieth century is fully confirmed through this legacy. As one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century, his readings of the major composers of classical music have often been referred to. | | | Live Recording from The Schubertiade, Feldkirch, 1991
In 1991, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau agreed to perform Schubert‘s Die Schöne Müllerin at the Feldkirch Schubertiade - he had not sung the song-cycle in public for twenty years. The great baritone belonged to the innermost circle of artists who give this unique, Austrian festival of chamber music its distinctive character. He had performed Schubert there on many occasions, but never Die Schöne Müllerin. The pianist András Schiff was another long-standing member of the inner circle, but this was the artists‘ fi rst collaboration in Feldkirch - and so Austrian Television (ORF) recorded the concert. During another Schubertiade a few years earlier, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau was interviewed by music journalist Franz Zoglauer. The resulting documentary of singer, painter and private person augments the concert presented on this DVD. The singer speaks of his affinity to Schubert and the composer‘s influence on the whole Lieder repertoire. This is a unique occasion, not only for the listeners in the hall but also for the two artists, who experienced their collaboration on the podium as something quite exceptional. The viewer can see this in the artists‘ animated give and take, their spontaneous mutual reactions, the creative excitement and a rare artistic vivacity. Both remember the evening as a special event, and without any hesitation consented to the recording being issued on DVD to make it available to a wider public. | | | Choruses for Male Voices and Orchestra
Lund Student Singers & Malmö Opera Orchestra, Alberto Hold-Garrido Drawing on the romantic spirit in music, Schubert’s moving setting is of a poem by Goethe which compares a rushing waterfall to the soul of man, while Strauss’s gorgeous Mittagsruhe depicts the peace of a summer noontide. Narrative vocal traditions are heard in Sibelius’s nationalist Vapautettu kuningatar, Bruckner’s heroic Helgoland, and Grieg’s Landkjenning, which tells of the 10th century Norwegian king Oleg Tryggvason. Das Liebesmahl der Apostel anticipates the religious ecstasies of Wagner’s Parsifal, while Debussy’s early cantata Invocation resonates with Gallic sparkle. “Seven resonant Romantic rarities...enthusiastically performed by a Swedish student choir.” BBC Music Magazine, December 2012 *** “This ensemble has a history that dates back to 1831...its joy in singing is one of the main reasons this disc is such a success. The other is its one-of-a-kind programme, which contains several unfamiliar or even obscure works, which nevertheless are of very high quality...This is a likeable release, and it would take an entire rugby team to pry it from my hands!” International Record Review, February 2013 | | | (also available to download from $6.00) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days.
