Sir George Solti, one of the greatest conductors of our day, died on 5th September 1997. The definitive profile “Solti – The making of a Maestro”, made during the last year of his life, captures the amazing energy and passion for music of this remarkable man. Filmed with Solti in Budapest, Bavaria, Chicago and London, the documentary charts his exceptional musical journey; from his early years in Hungary to his accalaimed leadership of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. A film by renowned director Peter Maniura, coproduced with the BBC. Solti was a most energetic conductor in both rehearsal and performance, with a frequently sharp and stabbing conducting style. At the same time he was also capable of producing the most beautiful legato playing. No Solti recording is without some point of interest: his stature as one of the most outstanding conductors of the twentieth century is fully confirmed through this legacy. As one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century, his readings of the major composers of classical music have often been referred to. | | | Schubert: Symphonies Nos. 8 & 9
Schubert’s last two symphonies are ambitious in scale and brimming with striking ideas, though only two movements of the Symphony No. 8 were finished and the score rediscovered and first performed 43 years after the composer’s death. The ‘Great’ C major Symphony marks the summit of Schubert’s achievement in the form, combining his unforgettable lyrical gift with the spirit of Beethoven. Michael Halász has been acclaimed for his “delightful performances” of Schubert. | | | Live Recording from The Schubertiade, Feldkirch, 1991
In 1991, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau agreed to perform Schubert‘s Die Schöne Müllerin at the Feldkirch Schubertiade - he had not sung the song-cycle in public for twenty years. The great baritone belonged to the innermost circle of artists who give this unique, Austrian festival of chamber music its distinctive character. He had performed Schubert there on many occasions, but never Die Schöne Müllerin. The pianist András Schiff was another long-standing member of the inner circle, but this was the artists‘ fi rst collaboration in Feldkirch - and so Austrian Television (ORF) recorded the concert. During another Schubertiade a few years earlier, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau was interviewed by music journalist Franz Zoglauer. The resulting documentary of singer, painter and private person augments the concert presented on this DVD. The singer speaks of his affinity to Schubert and the composer‘s influence on the whole Lieder repertoire. This is a unique occasion, not only for the listeners in the hall but also for the two artists, who experienced their collaboration on the podium as something quite exceptional. The viewer can see this in the artists‘ animated give and take, their spontaneous mutual reactions, the creative excitement and a rare artistic vivacity. Both remember the evening as a special event, and without any hesitation consented to the recording being issued on DVD to make it available to a wider public. | | | Choruses for Male Voices and Orchestra
Lund Student Singers & Malmö Opera Orchestra, Alberto Hold-Garrido Drawing on the romantic spirit in music, Schubert’s moving setting is of a poem by Goethe which compares a rushing waterfall to the soul of man, while Strauss’s gorgeous Mittagsruhe depicts the peace of a summer noontide. Narrative vocal traditions are heard in Sibelius’s nationalist Vapautettu kuningatar, Bruckner’s heroic Helgoland, and Grieg’s Landkjenning, which tells of the 10th century Norwegian king Oleg Tryggvason. Das Liebesmahl der Apostel anticipates the religious ecstasies of Wagner’s Parsifal, while Debussy’s early cantata Invocation resonates with Gallic sparkle. “Seven resonant Romantic rarities...enthusiastically performed by a Swedish student choir.” BBC Music Magazine, December 2012 *** “This ensemble has a history that dates back to 1831...its joy in singing is one of the main reasons this disc is such a success. The other is its one-of-a-kind programme, which contains several unfamiliar or even obscure works, which nevertheless are of very high quality...This is a likeable release, and it would take an entire rugby team to pry it from my hands!” International Record Review, February 2013 | | | (also available to download from $6.00) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. Bronislaw Gimpel (violin) & Martin Krause (piano) The new Bronislaw Gimpel edition presents on three CDs all recordings made by the violinist between 1954 and 1957 for the RIAS Berlin. Not only do they illustrate the striking violinistic profile of the artist, but also the stylistic palette of his repertoire. Bronislaw Gimpel (1911-1979) was one of the “old school” violin virtuosos. His distinctly individual approach towards sound and phrasing left a strong mark in the history of violin playing. Gimpel was born in the Galician city of Lemberg, today’s Lviv in the Ukraine. He received his musical training at the conservatoires of his home city as well as Vienna, and at the Berlin Musikhochschule with Carl Flesch. Gimpel established an international and versatile career as a soloist, concert master, chamber musician, conductor and violin teacher. “these performances show a soloist with a warm, commanding sound and great virtuosity in the big concertos. He is also a musician who brings sensitivity and intelligence to chamber music…the quality of the sound is astonishingly good.” International Record Review, November 2012 “This three-disc set, with music ranging from Tartini to Schumann, Janáček, Sibelius and Wieniawski will delight anyone interested in this phenomenal era of eastern European violinists” The Observer, 23rd September 2012 “Bronislav Gimpel (1911-79) was a true force of nature. A rewarding archive collection from a Polish-American virtuoso of the ‘old school’.” The Strad, November/December 2012 | | | (also available to download from $21.25) | Usually despatched in 3 - 4 working days. “it's a supercharged, witty performance [of the Poulenc] from 2007; Argerich's lacerating runs in the first movement are worth the price of the set alone...[Scaramouche is] a final helping of joyous, free-wheeling music-making.” The Guardian, 22nd November 2012 **** “[Argerich] combines a colossal technique with powerfully instinctive musicianship and electrifying energy. This exciting release is an ideal present.” New York Times, 23rd November 2012 “Few artists being such unfettered joy to their music-making as Argerich, and few combine such artless spontaneity, technical brilliance and searching insights. These are qualitites that shine through this marvellous new set...Even collectors who have Argerich playing most of these works already are likely to be as thrilled and elated as I have been listening to this extraordinary anthology” International Record Review, December 2012 “amply featuring her mercurial magic and joy in communal music-making.” The Times, 21st December 2012 “I would not deter anyone from duplicating because...there are many moments and passages of pure delight, often deriving from the frisson of a live performance (listen to the Poulenc!) One marvels anew at such freshly minted interpretations married to the insights, subtle nuances and detail acquired only after long acquaintance.” Gramophone Magazine, January 2013 | | | (Sorry, download not available in your country) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

| | | Schubert: Symphonies Nos. 6 & 8
PentaTone continue their collaboration with the Royal Flemish Philharmonic and Herreweghe. “Herreweghe and his Flemish players are clean, precise and pretty, with very little of any dark emotion. [the Unfinished] sounds much more like a piece from the Classical period, and arguably, that is what Herreweghe intends...While this would not be my prime recommendation for either symphony, there is much to admire in both orchestral execution and Herreweghe’s thoughtful interpretations.” MusicWeb International, March 2013 | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days.
