 | William Schuman & Leonard Bernstein
Robert McDuffie Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, Leonard Slatkin William Schuman (1910-1992) was born in the Bronx in New York City. He was both a composer and a music administrator. He took up his first teaching post in 1935 and, in 1945, became president of the Juilliard School of Music in New York, where he founded the Juilliard String Quartet. He held the position until 1961 when he became the first president of the newly-opened Lincoln Center. Among Schuman's works are no fewer than ten symphonies, several ballet scores, two operas, a piano concerto and this very exciting violin concerto. The Serenade is, effectively, a five-movement violin concerto that Bernstein wrote in 1954. It is based on Plato's Symposium. The symposium was an ancient Greek drinking party at which the male guests would debate. | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

 | American Music for Cello and Orchestra
Yehuda Hanani (cello) RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra (Ireland), William Eddins This recording presents three important yet infrequently heard American cello works. It is the first modern recording of William Schuman’s A Song of Orpheus; the Virgil Thomson Concerto for Violoncello and Orchestra in its original full orchestration has not been recorded since the 1950s; and William Perry’s Jamestown Concerto is receiving its world première recording. All three composers worked extensively in art song, opera or musical theatre, and their concertos, while technically demanding, emphasise the lyric qualities of the cello, the instrument that most closely identifies with the human voice. The music is distinctly American, optimistic and outgoing, while intentionally touching on the roots of the American experience. “Hanani’s cello is an impressive instrument, full of body and capable of an enormous range of color, and Hanani knows exactly how to fully exploit all of its possibilities…the consummate tastefulness that informs all of the playing here only serves to elevate the performances and the music.” Classics Today (on a previous release) |
