Cesare Siepi (bass) & Leo Taubmann (piano)

The song recital given by Cesare Siepi brings back memories of the legendary production of Don Giovanni staged during the Mozart bicentenary celebrations of 1956. Both as Don Giovanni himself and in his recital programme that same summer, Siepi delighted audiences with his warm bass voice. It was in fact not so much a song recital in the strict sense of the term but more of a highly personal encounter with a great singer who was a declared favourite with the Salzburg Festival's audiences. It is also a prime example of the great evenings of singing with which the Festival was to regale its ecstatic audiences from 1956 onwards. Siepi's programme was chosen to showcase his beautiful voice and cultivated singing but also his artistic versatility.

Live Recording 1956.

Beethoven:

Chopin:

Scherzo No. 4 in E major, Op. 54

Schumann:

Waldszenen, Op. 82

Stravinsky:

Three Movements from Petrushka

Randall Hodgkinson (piano)

“Mr. Hodgkinson's Petrouchka bristles and bustles...the performance is succinct, idiomatic and theatrical...A first-class Beethoven interpreter...Mr. Hodgkinson's brand of music making is admirable and persuasive. He has rhythmical drive and forthrightness, structural integrity, and largesse and flair” American Record Guide

“A rather spectacular piano recital...[his performance of Petrouchka is] a formidable pyrotechnic display every bit as virtuosic as it ought to be...Hodgkinson's Beethoven is a treat...Chopin's Fourth Scherzo shows Hodgkinson master of another mood...and finally a warm-toned account of Schumann's Waldscenen, ripe with charm and simplicity, rounds off a very impressive debut solo disc.” BBC Music Magazine

“A first-rate musician...Hodgkinson's superb sense of musical shape (supported by his exceptional variety of dynamics and nuance of articulation), coupled with lightness of spirit, invests all four performances with a strong sense of character...exquisite Schumann...a most welcome debut.” Fanfare
