The USSR Symphony Orchestra & Republican Russian Choir Chapel, Evgeni Svetlanov This symphony was an ambitious project for the young Russian composer. It was his first large
scale orchestral work and he set himself a monumental task. Huge orchestral forces combined with
a final choral fifth movement make this a large scale work by any standards. “Svetlanov's no-holds barred approach suits the emotionalism of Scriabin's neo-Wagnerian Symphony. Stunningly committed playing from the USSR State Symphony Orchestra is let down by the 1960s Soviet recording.” BBC Music Magazine, October 2008 ***** |

| | | Three Russian Piano Concertos by Pabst, Rimsky Korsakov and Scriabin
Oleg Marshev South Jutland Symphony Orchestra, Vladimir Ziva “...the fleet, perky finale [of the E flat Concerto by Pabst] is full of rapid runs, arpeggios, trills and other mind-boggling effects that Marshev, well supported by the orchestra, invests with a sure sense that the whole exercise has been worthwhile...The aplomb and stylistic understanding of [the three] performances bring all three works to life.” The Telegraph, 2nd August 2008 “This is Oleg Marshev's finest disc since his stylish accounts of the two Shostakovich concertos. The sound is as crisp and clean as the performances.” BBC Music Magazine, Proms 2008 ***** BBC Music Magazine

Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra (some works with the State Symphony Orchestra of the USSR), Evgeny Mravinsky Conductor Evgeny Mravinsky has become a legend. This Russian musician died in 1988 but his name is still well-known world-wide. Until his death he held the post of chief conductor of the elite Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra for an incredible 50 years. He left behind numerous recordings of his, to say the least, moving interpretations. After 1961 he only allowed live performances to be recorded.
Thus most of the recordings in this set, made between 1946 and 1983, are registrations of actual concerts. Beginning with Tchaikovsky Russian composers took a prominent position in Mravinsky’s repertoire. In fact the majority of the works in this set are Russian ranging from Mussorgsky to Liadov and from Prokofiev to Zhivotov. | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |
