Dmitri Shostakovich

(1906-75)

Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-75)

Russian composer whose working life coincided with the Soviet period at its height.

At times supported by it, he also experienced periods of virulent rejection by the authorities, particularly following his opera Lady Macbeth of 1936.

Of his fifteen symphonies, the Fifth and Tenth are especially significant. In addition to concertos, he wrote fifteen String Quartets which have an assured place in the repertoire of that medium.

His style was 'modern' but always remained accessible to the genral listener. He had particularly poor eyesight.
