| | | Cello Sonatas
Composed in 1934, almost concurrent the Congress of Soviet Writers declaration of "Socialist Realism" as the only acceptable mode for Soviet artistic production, the Cello Sonata gives proof of Shostakovich's struggle to maintain his intellectual integrity, which made him such a model for later generations - as he was for Mieczyslaw "Moisse" Vainberg and Boris Tchaikovsky, both of whom died in February 1996. Shostakovich maintained both of them, his composition pupil Tchaikovsky as well as his indirect pupil Vainberg, to be extraordinarily talented. This CD is a special contribution to the 100th anniversary of Shostakovich's birthday in 2006, and at the same time a remembrance of Vainberg's and Tchaikovsky's deaths ten years ago. | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. “…one of the most sheerly musical Shostakovich symphony recordings you will ever hear. …while this live performance may not be physically overwhelming from moment to moment, it has a long-term accumulating power that comes from structural far-sightedness.” Gramophone Magazine, Awards 2006 | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |

| | | Cello Sonatas - Shostakovich & Schnittke
“In many respects Alfred Schnittke seems to take Shostakovich's unique brand of introverted lyricism and his penchant for grotesque imagery to new levels of intensity. This link is palpably drawn by Alban Gerhardt and Steven Osborne whose approach to the much-recorded Shostakovich is admirably fresh and innovative. Particularly daring is their emotionally numb and extremely slow reading of the Largo coda to the first movement... In this context, the slow outer movements of the Schnittke seem particularly withdrawn and disturbing, the frenzied activity of the central Presto offering little respite to an all-pervasive feeling of gloom and despair.” BBC Music Magazine, July 2006 **** | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |
