39 CD-box with recordings of Bruno Walter’s later years in a high quality LP-sized box.

32 page LP-sized booklet with elaborate liner notes in German and English.

This box set contains the complete symphonies of Beethoven and Brahms, the later symphonies of Mozart, symphonies of Mahler and Bruckner, CDs with rehearsals and many more.

The German born conductor Bruno Walter (1876-1962) was known primarily for his interpretations of the Viennese school. Though out of step with 20th century trends he was such a fine musician that he became a major figure - filling the wide gulf between the extremes of his day - Arturo Toscanini and Wilhelm Furtwängler.

He was an associate of Gustav Mahler and a long and faithful proponent and interpreter of Mahler's music.

He conducted the world premieres of “Das Lied von der Erde” (1911) and the “Symphony No. 9” (1912).

In 1925, he helped institute the Salzburg Festival and was named musical director of the Berlin Staatsoper. In 1929, Walter had a falling out with the Berlin opera management and departed to succeed Wilhelm Furtwängler at the Leipzig Gewandhaus.

In 1933 he left Germany when the Nazis came to power and went to Austria and from there in 1938 to France. Walter finally left Europe in 1939 and settled in the United States where he already had a strong following. He built up a reputation as a respected conductor under whom musicians enjoyed working. Amongst other orchestras, he frequently conducted the New York Philharmonic.

In 1957 a West Coast recording ensemble named Columbia Symphony Orchestra was specially put together for Walter to produce new recordings of famous works by Bruckner and Mahler in stereo.

Strauss, R: Die schweigsame Frau, Op. 80

Franz Hawlata (Sir Morosus), Julia Bauer (Aminta), Bernhard Berchtold (Henry Morosus), Monika Straube (Theodosia Zimmerlein - Haushalterin), Andreas Kindschuh (Der Barbier), Guibee Yang (Isotta), Tiina Penttinen (Carlotta), Matthias Winter (Carlo Morbio), Kouta Räsänen (Cesare Vanuzzi), Martin Gäbler (Giuseppe Farfallo)

Chor des Oper Chemnitz & Robert-Schumann-Philharmonie, Frank Beermann

Die schweigsame Frau premiered in 1935 and represents what is perhaps Strauss’s most virtuosic and technically demanding score both for the orchestra and for the soloists. This may also be one of the reasons why this turbulent masterpiece is rarely performed today.

With a lavish wealth of musical ideas, and the juxtaposition of light comedy against grand opera, Strauss quotes himself and a dozen other composers in this work. He copies Rossini and spoofs Monteverdi – this is grand farcical fun!

N.B. Booklet notes contain English translation of libretto

Beethoven:

Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor, Op. 37

Mitsuko Uchida (piano)

Strauss, R:

Ein Heldenleben, Op. 40

Beethoven wrote his Piano Concerto No. 3 around 1800, at a time in which the ambitious composer had created his fi rst important works in Vienna, such as the “Pathétique” Sonata and the “Moonlight” Sonata – personal works full of power and passion, with which he distanced himself from his mentor and model, Haydn. This performance of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3 with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks under the direction of its principal conductor Mariss Jansons stars the distinguished pianist Mitsuko Uchida, who is known the world over for her outstanding interpretations of the piano works of Schubert, Mozart and Beethoven, as well as of 20th-century masters such as Schoenberg, Berg, Webern and Boulez.

Richard Strauss wrote his tone poem for large orchestra Ein Heldenleben (A Hero’s Life) in 1898, shortly before he left Munich for the Berlin Court Opera, where he was appointed house conductor. In the imaginary hero whose eventful life is described in the work, the young Strauss apparently envisioned the freelance artist of his time, who was exposed to considerable hostility during the Wilhelminian era, just as Strauss himself in his early Munich period.

This new collection of 55 CDs from the acclaimed label offers a wealth of recordings from the 1950s and 1960s in an unrivalled range of repertory.

This ranges from solo Bach played by harpsichordist Rafael Puyana to American composer and conductor Howard Hanson in his own works as well as music by fellow-Americans. Key artists include Antal Dorati in works ranging from Beethoven to Bartók and Berg; Frederick Fennell, Rafael Kubelík, Paul Paray and János Starker.

An extensive 182 page booklet includes new essays on the history and development of the Mercury label by Thomas Fine (son of Wilma Cozart Fine, legendary producer of the MLP label) and Mike Gray. Numerous photographs are included and full recording information is documented. When we say full recording information, we mean it too. All the details collectors love to see is here: the microphones, the recording location, the original engineers, the subsequent remastering engineers, even the type of recording equipment.

Two CDs of true rarities are included: Dorati’s 1953 mono recording of The Rite of Spring; and making its first-ever appearance on CD is John Corigliano’s Piano Concerto. The CD also includes a rare 16 minute interview with Corigliano and pianist Hilde Somer.

Edda Moser (soprano)

Edda Moser and EMI-Electrola – a special chapter in the history of recorded music. Two passions mark this longstanding cooperation: a love of opera – especially of Mozart–, and of the intimate art of Lieder singing. Talking to Thomas Voigt and Holger Wemhoff, Edda Moser recalls these “moments of musical bliss” in the recording studio and on the stage. With the two interviews, Edda Moser’s tribute to Mozart and the CD premières of five Lieder albums plus her aria recital, this edition paints a many-faceted and personal portrait of the great soprano.
