“When writing down an opera Strauss naturally had a precise idea of how certain passages were to sound, and if, at rehearsal, one passage or another did not completely correspond to what he had imagined, he ceaselessly criticized it and made corrections, but nothing satisfied him. On such occasions he really did not show his best side, but I willingly accepted it from such a personality because I learned such an enormous amount from him” Karl Böhm Recorded live at the Grosser Musikvereinssaal, Vienna, 17-18
September 1970 “Least appealing of conductors, Böhm achieves impressive results from an anxious-looking Vienna Philharmonic. This is a chastening lesson in precision, concentration, obedience.” BBC Music Magazine, August 2008 **** “…absolutely fascinating from start to finish…a wonderful document… This is a DVD that nobody interested in the art and craft of conducting should miss” International Record Review | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

Renaud Capuçon (Guarneri del Gesù, 1737 violin) & Jérôme Ducros (piano) Renaud Capuçon is following in the footsteps of the great violinists of the past century, such as Heifetz, Kreisler and Menuhin, with this virtuoso programme of compositions, transcriptions and arrangements for the violin and piano, recorded in the Lugano Festival 2007. “It seems there is nothing Capuçon cannot do. He maintains the same level of tonal purity and lustrousness at all dynamic levels across all four strings… His phrasing and timing is immaculate, his intonation ear-ringingly true and - especially important in this repertoire - his exquisitely subtle use of portamento is such as to rival even Kreisler and Heifetz.” BBC Music Magazine, September 2008 ***** “Not since the emergence of Vengerov and Repin has such an exciting young violinist come our way.” International Record Review “Capuçon’s violin transcriptions rarely disappoint. If it’s not his fervour that amazes, it’s his delicacy. Elgar’s La Capricieuse is a melting wonder, Prokofiev’s Masks a bracing stomp. The programming sprinkles the firecrackers with pensive surprises (Roxana’s Song from Szymanowski), waltzing Strauss, and the finale is unusually reflective – two Schumann songs. A delight.” The Times, 18th April 2008 **** | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

“Andrew Kennedy is an eager, bright-eyed lover: the bloom and the tenderness of the middle range of his voice, in particular, knows just how to bring a luxuriant Straussian intimacy to a song such as 'Seitdem dein Aug' in meines Schaute.” BBC Music Magazine, May 2008 *** “Hyperion is an old hand at programming attractively playable discs that make up complete Lied editions. Kennedy's selection has the earlier material, with the Opp 17 and 32 groups given complete. Strauss's choice of poets at this stage in his Lied career may not have been as sophisticated as it became but he never chose a text that didn't inspire a clear musical portrait. Especially well pointed are two Des Knaben Wunderhorn songs ('Himmelsboten' and the droll love-onthe- cheap story of 'Für fünfzehn Pfennige') and the dark, serious 'Sehnsucht'. The better-known 'Ständchen' and what Roger Vignoles's notes call the 'ebullient barnstormer' 'Heimliche Aufforderung' are placed cunningly within the recital order. Vignoles's playing continues to achieve a maximum of freshness and invention and a chameleon- like closeness to his singer's tone and line. Kennedy's voice is young, sweet, fluent and has what some commentators call 'sap'. Greater naturalness (and especially inwardness) will come in his live and later performances of this repertoire. In the meantime, a lot of work and study has gone into this disc and the readings attain a consistently high standard of beautiful music-making.” Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010 “Vignoles's playing continues to achieve a maximum of freshness and invention… Kennedy's voice is young, sweet, fluent and has what some commentators call "sap". A lot of work and study has gone into this disc and the readings attain a consistently high standard of beautiful music-making.” Gramophone Magazine, July 2008 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

“Still one of the truly great recordings. Solti's conducting is refreshing, more champagne than schmaltz, yet not unduly driven, and his singers are superb, not just Crespin, Minton and Jungwirth (as Ochs) but the entire ensemble.” BBC Music Magazine, May 2008 ***** “For those craving good sound and a reading of great charm – Crespin's rather Gallic Marschallin is wondrously sung – Solti's 1968 set is worth considering. Many collectors rate this even more highly than the classic Karajan.” Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |
