100 Best Operetta

100 Best Operetta

This 6CD set contains 100 tracks from the international catalogues of EMI Classics and Virgin Classics of the best songs from the most famous operettas from Vienna, Berlin, London, New York and Madrid.

The operettas represented here are among the most popular and successful ever written, covering the period from the middle of the 19th century to the early part of the 20th century, after which the genre evolved into what we now know as musicals. These operettas produced some of the world’s best-known melodies that have become established in their own right outside of the theatre and have been heard in every context, including concerts, recordings and film soundtracks.

All the items are sung in the language in which they were originally written.

The Austro-Hungarian composers like Johann Strauss II, Franz Lehár and Emmerich Kálmán contribute many gloriously romantic pieces from their timeless operettas, including Die Fledermaus, Der Zigeunerbaron, Gräfin Mariza, Der Graf von Luxemburg, Das Land des Lächelns and of course the immortal Die lustige Witwe (The Merry Widow).

There is also a representation of the Berlin school of operetta with extracts from works by Eduard Künneke (Der Vetter aus Dingsda) and Walter Kollo (Drei alte Schachtein and Marietta), the latter sung by the composer’s grandson, the tenor René Kollo.

The French operetta tradition is strongly represented by some of the finest operettas ever written such as Orphée aux Enfers, La vie Parisienne and La Belle Hélène by Offenbach, Véronique by Messager and La Fille de Madame Angot by Lecocq.

The works of Gilbert and Sullivan are acknowledged to be the pinnacle of English operetta and they are represented by items like ‘Poor wand’ring one’ from The Pirates of Penzance and ‘Take a pair of sparkling eyes’ from The Gondoliers. Other English composers include Edward German (Merrie England), Ivor Novello (Glamorous Night) and Noël Coward (Bitter Sweet).

In America, a group of composers produced some superb operettas that were fully comparable to the Viennese models that inspired them. These include The Belle of New York by Gustave Kerker, Naughty Marietta by Victor Herbert and The Firefly by Rudolf Friml.

The lively world of the Spanish zarzuela is not neglected, with a generous selection of arias and choruses from some of the most attractive works of this genre, including Doña Francisquita by Vives, Los gavilanes by Guerrero, La taberna del puerto by Sorozábal and La tempranica by Giménez.

All the performances are in authentic style, and the singers are international stars who have appeared in all the major performing centres of the world. Their names include Victoria de los Angeles, Sari Barabas, Teresa Berganza, June Bronhill, José Carreras, Michel Dens, Nicolai Gedda, Barbara Hendricks, Mady Mesplé, Jessye Norman, Lucia Popp, Anneliese Rothenberger, Rudolf Schock, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Rolando Villazón and Fritz Wunderlich.

Recorded at Henry Wood Hall, London on 7 & 8 March 2012.

The London Philharmonic Orchestra takes part in the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant on 3 June as part of the 1000 boat flotilla celebrating the Queen’s 60th anniversary. Its musicians will play works chosen for their association with British history and London landmarks, recorded here to capture the spirit of the occasion and to serve as a memento of a unique day.

Highlights of the music include Percy Grainger’s Country Gardens, Jupiter from Gustav Holst’s The Planets, Thomas Arne’s Rule, Britannia!, the James Bond Theme, The Dam Busters by Eric Coates and two works by Elgar – Nimrod from Enigma Variations and Pomp & Circumstance March No. 1. The CD closes out with a performance of the National Anthem.

“You don’t have to be ravingly patriotic to enjoy this, but it helps. When the Jubilee flotilla travels down the Thames on June 3, the London Philharmonic will be on board. This CD gives a foretaste of what to expect...The music is crisply delivered under David Parry.” The Times, 12th May 2012

100 Best Overtures

100 Best Overtures

CD 1 begins with some classic operatic overtures by Rossini, starting with Il barbiere di Siviglia and La scala di seta. Then come three brilliant overtures from Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro, Così fan tutte and Don Giovanni, followed by examples of operatic overtures by Italian composers: Donizetti, Bellini and Wolf-Ferrari. The scene then shifts to Russia for the overture to Glinka’s colourful opera Ruslan and Ludmilla and the delightful overture that introduces Tchaikovsky’s greatly loved ballet The Nutcracker. The CD ends with the popular overtures to Smetana’s The Bartered Bride and Reznicek’s Donna Diana.

CD 2 starts with a collection of pieces by Verdi, including the powerful overture to La forza del destino and the poignant prelude to La traviata. We then move to France for the spectacular prelude to Bizet’s Carmen, the overture to Gounod’s Faust and some high-spirited music by Offenbach to begin his operettas La Vie Parisienne and Orphée aux enfers. The CD ends with our first example of German music, namely the overture to Hansel und Gretel by Humperdinck.

CD 3 takes us back in time to the Baroque era, with overtures by Purcell and Handel, including the introduction to Messiah, and then we hear operatic overtures by Beethoven (Fidelio) and Weber (Der Freischütz and Euryanthe). These are followed by some of the most famous symphonic overtures by Suppé, including Dichter und Bauer (‘Poet and Peasant’) and Leichte Kavallerie (‘Light Cavalry’), which is always such a hit at the BBC Promenade Concerts in London each summer. Then come Nicolai’s delightful overture to Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor and extracts from the overtures to two much-loved operettas by Johann Strauss II: Die Fledermaus and Der Zigeunerbaron. The CD ends with some powerful music from the operas of Wagner, including the overtures to Der fliegende Holländer and Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg and the stirring prelude to Act III of Die Walküre, known as the Ride of the Valkyries.

CD 4 begins with more operatic overtures by Handel and Mozart, as well as three overtures by Gluck, including Orfeo ed Euridice. Then come three of Beethoven’s great concert overtures:

Die Geschöpfe des Prometheus, Coriolan and Egmont. The CD concludes with two contrasting Italian operatic overtures by Donizetti: Linda di Chamounix and Don Pasquale.

CD 5 opens with more Rossini overtures, including La gazza ladra and Semiramide, and then more overtures by Bellini (Norma and I Capuletti e i Montecchi) and Gounod (Roméo et Juliette). These are followed by extracts from two of Tchaikovsky’s most famous symphonic overtures: Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture and the spectacular 1812 Overture. Shostakovich’s Festive Overture then leads us to three light-hearted overtures to the English light operas of Gilbert and Sullivan, starting with the lively H.M.S. PInafore.

CD 6 continues with extracts from more Gilbert and Sullivan overtures, including The Pirates of Penzance and The Mikado, then after a brief glimpse of Elgar’s symphonic overture Cockaigne – subtitled ‘In London Town’ – we move to the field of musicals, starting with the overture to a classical British show from the Edwardian era: The Arcadians. This is followed by overtures to some of the greatest Broadway musicals of all time, from Gershwin’s Girl Crazy, via Kern’s immortal Show Boat, through the great shows of the 1940s and 50s like Irving Berlin’s Annie Get Your Gun and Cole Porter’s Kiss Me, Kate to Leonard Bernstein’s sparkling Wonderful Town and his brilliant Candide.

This 6CD set contains 100 tracks from the catalogues of EMI Classics and Virgin Classics of the best and most familiar overtures from operas, operettas and musicals, as well as some of the finest overtures from the symphonic repertoire.

Gilbert & Sullivan (Box Set)

Gilbert & Sullivan (Box Set)

Sullivan, A:

The Mikado

The most successful of their ‘Savoy’ operas, The Mikado made fun of English bureaucracy, thinly disguised by its Japanese setting. Enjoying over 650 performances at the Savoy Theatre, this work remains their most frequently performed work, and has been translated into numerous languages.

Anne-Maree Mcdonald, Graeme Ewer, Heather Begg, Peter Cousens & Gregory Yurisich

The Australian Opera Chorus & The Elizabethan Sydney Orchestra, Andrew Greene

The Gondoliers

The last of Gilbert & Sullivan’s great successes, The Gondoliers, takes place partly in Venice and partly in the kingdom of Barataria. The lilting score contains some of their most sparkling and tuneful music, and plenty of dancing.

David Hobson, Roger Lemke, Suzanne Johnson, Christine Douglas, Robert Gard & Graeme Ewer

The Australian Opera Chorus & The Elizabethan Philharmonic Orchestra, Dobbs Franks

HMS Pinafore

HMS Pinafore was Gilbert & Sullivan’s first international hit, satirising the rise of unqualified people to positions of authority, and poking good-natured fun at the English obsession with social status. As with many of their operas, a surprise twist at the end of the story turned the drama on its head.

Anthony Warlow, David Hobson, Colette Mann, John Bolton Wood, Tiffany Speight, Ali McGregor, Roxane Hislop & Richard Alexander

Opera Australia Chorus & Orchestra Victoria, Andrew Greene

Trial by Jury

Composed in a matter of weeks, Trial by Jury pokes humorous fun at the law and the legal profession, based on Gilbert’s own experiences as a barrister. The outrageous antics of the characters led to the work being the toast of London, and was a runaway success.

Patience

The last of Gilbert & Sullivan’s great successes, The Gondoliers, takes place partly in Venice and partly in the kingdom of Barataria. The lilting score contains some of their most sparkling and tuneful music, and plenty of dancing.

Christine Douglas, Heather Begg, Anthony Warlow & Dennis Olsen

The Elizabethan Philharmonic Orchestra, David Stanhope

During their long and successful partnership, William Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan collaborated on fourteen operas, many of which are still regularly performed throughout the English speaking world today.

Although he was of Australian nationality Sir Charles Mackerras was actually born in Schenectady, New York in 1925. The family moved to Sydney when Mackerras was just three-years-old. In 1947 Sir Charles sailed for England with the intention of becoming a conductor and joined the Sadler's Wells orchestra as a wind player. He soon won a British Council scholarship to study conducting with Vaclav Talich in Prague and it was whilst there that he discovered and fell in love with the music of Janácek.

Returning to London Sir Charles began his life-long association with Sadler's Wells Opera (now English National Opera), developing his reputation as a significant conductor of the works of Janácek, Handel, Gluck, Mozart, Britten, Sullivan and many others.

As well as Sir Charles's first recording of Janácek's Sinfonietta, this 5-CD set also showcases him performing the music of other composers whose music he was particularly famed for the world over.

Sir Charles died on 14 July 2010 at the age of 84. He remained active right up until his illness took over and, at the time of his death, he was scheduled to conduct at the 2010 Proms and the Edinburgh Festival.
