Romeo & Juliet - Fantasy Overture

Kirov Theatre Orchestra, Yuri Temirkanov

A superb value set featuring Rozhdestvensky conducting Symphonies Nos. 4–6, Simonov conducting Symphony No.2, and Fedoseyev conducting Nos.1 & 3. Gibson conducts the famous 1812 Overture, and Temirkanov delivers a passionate Romeo and Juliet. Tchaikovsky’s Symphonies Nos. 1–6 and ‘Manfred’ Symphony (after Byron) encapsulate the composer’s struggle with his own creative genius.

Both No.1 and No.2 were revised following their initial performances, due to the composer’s dissatisfaction with their original states. Despite this, the Symphony No.1 (‘Winter Daydreams’) is a delightful work, the most optimistic of the six, while the Symphony No.2 (‘Little Russian’) is unique for its nationalistic edge, although it relies upon Ukrainian folk tunes, not Russian. The composer was, however, satisfied with the two symphonies that followed, although the Symphony No.3 ‘Polish’ remains the least well known of the cycle, displaying his indebtedness to Western European models, notably Schumann whose Symphony No.3 was also in five movements. Symphony No.4 is generally recognised as Tchaikovsky’s first symphonic masterpiece. Written during a time of great stress, its composition offered him an escape from his near breakdown, and he considered it one of his best creations. Tchaikovsky was less pleased with the outcome of his 5th Symphony.

He wrote ‘I have written myself out… no ideas, no inclination… That symphony is repellent… it will never please the public’.

Despite this, it is the most performed of his symphonies and widely considered to be one of the greatest symphonies of all time. He commenced his Symphony No.6, which was to be his final composition, in 1893; it is a sombre work, of which he wrote ‘Without exaggeration, I have put my whole soul into this work’. Within 9 days he was dead – officially from cholera (an unlikely cause of death in the middle and upper classes), which caused rumour to spread that he had, in fact, taken his own life. The 6th subsequently gained the title ‘Pathétique’. This comprehensive set contains performances by some of the great Tchaikovsky interpreters and, in addition to the symphonies, contains the overtures, Capriccio italien and the enduringly popular Marche slave.

Sony Classical is pleased to announce the release of the recording of one of the world’s most famous classical music events: the 2012 New Year’s Concert with the Vienna Philharmonic. Latvian conductor Mariss Jansons returns to direct the 2012 celebrations after his acclaimed debut in 2006. The live recording encompasses releases on CD, DVD and Blu-ray.

The annual New Year's Day Concert in the stunning Vienna Musikverein has been an exalted tradition for more than seven decades, and the resulting recordings with works from the Strauss dynasty and their contemporaries are among the classical market's most important releases. The concert will be broadcast on TV and radio to over 70 countries around the world with an estimate of more than 40 million viewers.

The programme traditionally revolves around waltzes and polkas by the Strauss family (Johann father and son as well as Josef and Eduard Strauss) whose music has enjoyed a recent resurgence due to the success of André Rieu and his Johann Strauss Orchestra. In 2012 the programme is once again a skilful blend of well-known classics and six New Year’s Concert premieres. As always the concert is bound to end with two traditional encores – the famous waltz The Blue Danube and the Radetzky March.

“It is something quite special: a wonderful opportunity to listen to this music and get to know it. This atmosphere, the Vienna Philharmonic, the Golden Hall of the Musikverein – all that adds up to a long and wonderful tradition resulting in fantastic, very specific music.” Mariss Jansons

“There's nothing here that disappoints, and the stylishness of the performances can be taken for granted, if not by the musicians themselves...the recording is excellent in capturing a happy occasion.” International Record Review, May 2012

Serenade No. 9 in D major, K320 'Posthorn' - Menuetto

Bonus. Sanders Theatre, Harvard University, 15 January 1963

Tchaikovsky:

Symphony No. 5 in E minor, Op. 64

Symphony Hall, Boston, 15 April 1969

This series of DVDs will make the publicly broadcast BSO concerts from this era available for the first time since they were broadcast. This rare material represents some of the earliest televised concerts with the Boston Symphony and Erich Leinsdorf, and has been restored using the greatest care and state-of-the-art techniques. It is of exceptional musical interest and historic value.

The BSO’s Music Director for seven seasons, Leinsdorf had a long and distinguished career, having worked with Toscanini and Walter, conducting at the Metropolitan Opera, New York City Opera, Cleveland Orchestra and Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra in addition to his tenure at the BSO.

This 1969 performance of Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony has been the object of some attention from internet bloggers, with one site featuring an almost complete audio recording of the performance. Readers were astonished at the intensity and drive behind Leinsdorf’s interpretation.

Because he didn’t perform the work regularly (on only 14 occasions with the BSO) the performance is fresh and insightful – the emotional commitment is great both from Leinsdorf and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, which Richard Dyer describes as ‘solid, flexible and brilliant’.

All three featured works are new to Leinsdorf’s discography.

Two of ICA’s BSO DVDs featuring Charles Munch as conductor have been awarded the Diapason d’Or in France’s Diapason magazine.

“A hard-driven but very exciting Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 5 and Beethoven's Egmont from 1969 is countered by a delightful, stylish Mozart's Posthorn Serenade.” BBC Music Magazine, May 2012 ****

“The standard of playing is little short of sensational and Leinsdorf's actual interpretation...possesses prodigious energy, drama and sweep. Granted, the maestro's disconcertingly exaggerated podium manner takes some getting used to, but his authority is never in doubt. The closing pages shoot off like a rocket, Leinsdorf's audible exhortations merely intensifying the giddy rush of adrenaline.” Gramophone Magazine, June 2012

Russian ‘classical' music seems to have a dual consciousness: sometimes grave and interiorised, sometimes luminous and resolutely forward-looking. At root, this sentiment draws equally on the countless traditions of the biggest country in the world and on its relationship with western Europe, and especially France, from the 18th century onwards. If we had to define the very special atmosphere of Russian music in a few words, we might say that it represents the ‘exchange', ‘sharing' and ‘absorption' of an infinity of cultural and musical idioms. The principal interest of the works on this set is the approach they represent to three central aspects of this repertory, three ‘Treasures of Russia', through three of its most famous composers: the influence of Orthodox religious music with the Vespers of Serge Rachmaninoff; the modernity and importance of the musical ‘image' with Modest Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition; and finally the languor and inner heartbreak so characteristic of the Russian soul, as laid bare in one of the peaks of musical emotion – the Sixth Symphony of Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, the ‘Pathétique'.

Mariusz Kwiecien (baritone)

Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Lukasz Borowicz

Mariusz Kwiecien’s journey to the top of his profession has been remarkably rapid and assured for a young man from Kraków who arrived in New York at the age of 23. The Met’s current Don Giovanni, Polish baritone Mariusz, has won over audiences in many of the world’s greatest opera houses with his powerful interpretations. For his first solo recital he employs his mellifluous and burnished voice to great effect in Polish, Russian and Czech arias which are very close to his heart. A collection of operatic gems, familiar and rare, including the electric final scene from Szymanowski’s ‘King Roger’, which joins Giovanni as his favourite role.

“The basis for this recital is refreshing...Kwiecien really enters the spirit of [The Haunted Manor aria], his focused voice blazing forth in what was the composer's barely concealed encouragement of his countrymen after their unsuccessful uprising against the Russians in 1863...The final scene of King Roger, in which the orchestra holds sway for some while, finds the baritone releasing his sound to the fullest.” International Record Review, January 2012

“The basic sound – a mix of grit and velvet – is immensely appealing, though there are moments of constriction in his upper registers, and an occasional pulse in his tone. On the plus side, he has a remarkable ability to colour his voice to suit each character, so that Borodin's Prince Igor, thinking of his wife on the eve of battle, sounds very different from Rachmaninov's Byronic Aleko, teetering on the edge of self-destruction.” The Guardian, 5th January 2012 ****

“Your head might explode in the final track of Slavic Heroes. Bombarded by treacly tones and the lush eroticism of Szymanowski's Król Roger, this is heady stuff indeed. But it's just one of many such treats on Mariusz Kwiecień's new recording...The sheer lyrical arrogance of his dismissal of Tatyana breaks your heart. And, as if playing the opera for real, his Act 3 aria is palpably neurotic... I cannot wait to hear Kwiecień performing these roles live.” Entartete Musik, 8th January 2012

“Kwiecieñ fields wide variety of dynamic and tone-colour to convey dramatic mood...he is greatly aided by the exceptional playing of Borowicz's marvellous orchestra, and indeed by his conducting, which raises this disc high above run-of-the-mill recitals. Their hair-raising account of the finale of King Roger is alone worth the price....This is a lovely disc, thanks to both singer and conductor.” Opera, February 2012

“His Onyegin...is close to ideal: lyrical, still youthful, attentive to nuances of notes and text. Roger’s ecstatic Hymn to Apollo could hardly be bettered today.” Sunday Times, 22nd January 2012

“Like Tchaikovsky's hero, Kwiecien's programme vacillates between hauteur and abandon, contrasting various arias with no apparent strain. The Czech repertoire ("Certova Stena" and "Selma Sedlak") is on a more intimate scale, but "Hymn to Apollo" from Szymanowski's King Roger is divine.” The Independent on Sunday, 22nd January 2012

“[His signature roles] suggest a certain dashing Italianate quality that's refelcted in his voice: lighter, less rich and chocolatey than some Slavic rivals, for example Dmitri Hvorostovsky. But he also sounds more luminous and less thickly textured, with excellent diction and bel canto agility...Backed by an obviously committed Polish conductor, Kwiecien offers a seriously appealing recital, recorded in first-rate sound.” BBC Music Magazine, February 2012 ****

“this thoughtfully planned recital holds several welcome discoveries, and Kwiecień’s assured performances are an enticement unto themselves...Apart from passing traces of constriction on top, Kwiecień delivers everything robustly and sensitively, and receives fine, idiomatic support” Classical Review, January 2012

“the programming fills a valuable niche...Invariably, Kwiecien gives vocally solid, passionate accounts of the music. His well focused (if not exceptionally glamorous) baritone gives a luxuriously clean sense of line...Kwiecien's Onegin is particularly nuanced.” Gramophone Magazine, March 2012

“There’s a husky darkness to the voice. It’s frequently beautiful, but highly expressive, especially when used with real restraint. The attraction of this well-produced aria disc is the repertoire...Play it at maximum volume and weep.” The Arts Desk, 17th March 2012

Barenboim plays Schumann & Tchaikovsky

Barenboim plays Schumann & Tchaikovsky

Schumann:

Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 54

Recorded live at Stadthalle Erlangen, 1991

Tchaikovsky:

Piano Concerto No. 1 in B flat minor, Op. 23

Recorded live at the Gasteig, Munich, 1991

A new release of the series of Metropolitan Munich programs.

Today Daniel Barenboim is internationally recognized and revered as an orchestral and operatic conductor, pianist, and a musical ambassador and also as a humanitarian. Partnering him is the remarkable conductor Sergiu Celibidache. “He was one of the greatest musicians I ever encountered”, says Barenboim. Sergiu Celibidache has been called a musical giant, a magician, a brilliant lion-tamer and an enfant terrible of classical music. He was a legend in his own lifetime, mesmerizing orchestras audiences and critics with his intensity and brilliance.

Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No.1 is one of the most popular of his compositions and among the best known of all piano concerti. The Schumann concerto is no less influential with its influence heard in Grieg’s Piano Concerto. Both works show Barenboim at his consummate best.
