| | | Souvenir: Trondheim Solisten
TrondheimSolistene, Øyvind Gimse TrondheimSolistene (The Trondheim Soloists) are regarded as one of the top chamber orchestras in the world. Their Divertimenti (2L50SABD) and Folk Style (2L68SABD) releases were both nominated for a total of five American Grammy Awards in categories “Best Small Ensemble”, “Best Engineered Album” and “Best Surround Sound Album”. This release will no doubt receive similar plaudits. “The usual instrumental groupings were broken up and the players placed in a circle surrounding the microphones, so the listener is immersed in the sound. The result is an immersive experience that's thrillingly different from the norm...However, while fast passages sound viscerally exciting, they periodically lack direction.” BBC Music Magazine, March 2013 **** “The very slight chill on (or freezing of) the warm Romantic sound you're expecting to hear brings a degree of objectivity, or extra focus, to the performance. Additionally, the Trondheimers are as precise narrators of musical argument as any string quartet or conductor-led ensemble.” Gramophone Magazine, December 2012 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Glinka: Gran Sestetto Originale & Divertimento Brillante
Welcome to a rare dalliance with the chamber music of Glinka, the pioneer of patriotic Russian opera including 'Ivan Susanin' (A Life for the Tsar, 1839) then 'Ruslan & Ludmila' (1842), he was the first Russian composer to gain wide recognition within his own country, and is often regarded as the father of Russian classical music. The mighty Prazaks pay tribute to the foreunner of Rossini and also play Tchaikovsky's 1871 Op. 11 designed for chamber orchestra rather than for the 16 strings of a quartet. | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

Otto Klemperer was born on 14th May 1885 in Breslau, Silesia (now Wroclaw, Poland) and died on 6th July 1973 in Zurich and hence next year we mark 40 years since his passing. Although disfigured by a stroke suffered whilst a brain tumour was being removed he became a world-renowned conductor whose recordings became and remain touchstones for the EMI catalogue. Having completed the highly successful series of Beethoven recordings it was natural for EMI to seek further Romantic symphonies from Otto Klemperer. In addition to those of Brahms, Bruckner and Mahler which appear in their own specific boxes, Klemperer recorded three by Schubert, two by Mendelssohn as well as the Hebrides Overture and Midsummer Night’s Dream Incidental music, all four by Schumann as well as three Overtures, the last three by Tchaikovsky as well as Berlioz Symphonie fantastique, Franck’s D minor and Dvorák’s “From the New World”. This set also contains three Overtures by Weber and Johann Strauss’s Overture Die Fledermaus and two favourite Waltzes. Although clearly not a Symphony the charming Incidental music to a Midsummer Night’s Dream by Mendelssohn is included as Klemperer held it in the greatest affection and performed it on many occasions throughout his career. With the exception of the Franck and three of the Schumann Symphonies all recordings are with the Philharmonia Orchestra and therefore predate 1964. “Klemperer completists will probably have most of these performances already, and more general collectors will not necessarily regard any of the recordings as being first choice in the repertory. They nevertheless give an unusual sidelight on a conductor whose interpretations may be controversial but are always interesting.” MusicWeb International, April 2013 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Tchaikovsky: Mstislav Rostropovich & Benjamin Britten
Britten: | Gloriana (extracts) Bonus. Snape Maltings Concert Hall, Aldeburgh, 5 June 1970 Peter Pears (tenor) The Aldeburgh Fesitval Singers | Tchaikovsky: | Variations on a Rococo Theme, Op. 33 Snape Maltings Concert Hall, Aldeburgh, 16 June 1968 Mstislav Rostropovich (cello) Pezzo capriccioso, Op. 62 for cello & orchestra (or cello & piano) Snape Maltings Concert Hall, Aldeburgh, 16 June 1968 Mstislav Rostropovich (cello) Romeo & Juliet - Fantasy Overture Snape Maltings Concert Hall, Aldeburgh, 16 June 1968 |
“These recordings represent an overview of twenty of the most heady years of Mstislav Rostropovich’s career, during which he made his name in the West, was exiled from his homeland for his support of dissident artists, poets and musicians, and established himself as a major international force for (not just the musical) good.” (Chris de Souza) Introduced to Britten through Shostakovich, his teacher, Rostropovich formed a close partnership with the British composer – as evident here in their collaborative performances from the opening concert of the new Snape Maltings Concert Hall, which includes rare audiovisual footage of the Maltings before it was destroyed by fire in 1969 and rebuilt. Rostropovich’s Aldeburgh performance of Variations on a Rococo Theme displays him at the peak of his powers and is a wonderful example of his partnership with Britten, of whom this is rare conducting footage. The excerpts from Britten’s opera Gloriana (the contemporary poetic name for Elizabeth I), included as the bonus of this DVD, are a highly significant addition to the composer’s discography. While Britten conducted recordings of most of his operas on disc, Gloriana was not one of them, so this is the only hint we have of his approach to any of the score. The well-chosen sections, forming an unusual concert suite, include The Lute Song performed by Peter Pears. This is the first release of this material on DVD, and is available in time for the Britten centenary in 2013. Sound format: Enhanced Mono DVD format: NTSC Picture format: 4:3 Running time: 68’ Subtitles: n/a Menu languages: English Booklet languages: E/F/G Region code: 0 Territory Restrictions: None “it is a joy to see the two musicians in partnership. Britten sympathetically accompanying with the ECO...The 'bonus' is a real treat: Britten conducting excerpts from Gloriana...both chorus and orchestra are fully alert to Britten's every gesture - a truly electrifying performance” BBC Music Magazine, January 2013 **** | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

Sergei Rachmaninov (piano) This third volume of Rachmaninov’s Victor recordings contains discs he made of his own solo compositions and arrangements from the introduction of electrical recording in 1925 to a year before his death. The works recorded were those most in demand by the public, each piece subject to Rachmaninov’s perfectionism and the version released always the best of a number of takes (for example, the recording of his famous Prelude in C sharp minor is Take 23). Whether it be in the 1925 recording of his transcription of Kreisler’s Liebesfreud or the February 1942 recording of the same work (in which he displays a cast iron technique only a year before his death), the sheer virtuosity, utter clarity and supreme musicianship of Rachmaninov’s playing style are undiminished. The first two releases in this series have been acclaimed for their superb remastering. Ward Marston, producer and audio restoration engineer “Wonders galore in Rachmaninov's playing, beyond its obvious historical importance. Cast-iron technique, proper old-school sense of line and tone colour, and an incomparable rubato.” BBC Music Magazine, May 2013 ***** “No composer or pianist has ever sounded more indelibly Russian, and never more so than in his own music...What clear relish and delight in the playful rather than melancholic capers of the Polka, what vitality and aplomb in the festive E major Prelude...this, the thrid volume of Naxos's 'Great Pianists' Rachmaninov, gives us playing beyond price.” Gramophone Magazine, January 2013 | | | (also available to download from $9.00) | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

Choreography by Yuri Grigorovich, Nov 2011 Sets Designed by Ezio Frigerio Costumes Designed by Franca Squarciapino Classical ballet release event for this year! Tchaikovsky’s ballet in a new production for the reopening of the historic Bolshoi Ballet stage. It also celebrates superstar David Hallberg's Bolshoi debut, the first American principal soloist ever to be hired by the Bolshoi Ballet. The choreographer, Yuri Grigorovich presents a new version of his most famous choreography for a breath taking experience in splendid sets designed by Ezio Frigerio and more than 400 new costumes designed by Franca Squarciapino. The American superstar dancer David Hallberg is Prince Désiré. Hallberg is the first main american soloist ever to be hired by the Bolshoi Ballet. Princess Aurora is danced by the principal Svetlana Zakharova, well known to Parisian audiences thanks to her many performances at the Palais Garnier. She is also the soloist on the best seller 'Pharaoh's daughter' DVD released by Bel Air Classiques in 2004. They are joined by a great cast : Maria Allash (Lilac Fairy) , Artem Ovcharenko (Bluebird) and Nina Kaptsova (Princess Florine). The Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra is conducted by Vassily Sinaisky. “Grand-scale performance of the Petipa masterpiece, with Zakharova miraculous in the lead.” BBC Music Magazine, January 2013 **** “Unashamedly traditional, gloriously staged, with a tremendous cast … pin-sharp clarity and fine sound … essential viewing. It is no exaggeration to say that even without Tchaikovsky’s music, the sumptuousness and elegance of the screen images are such that one could enjoy it as a purely visual experience. Add to that one of the most radiantly inspired orchestral scores of the nineteenth century and the results are quite simply irresistible” International Record Review, March 2013 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |
