At no time in its long history did European music go through a period of such revolution and diversification as in the 20th Century. Wagner had transformed music in the 19th century to the extent that every composer coming after had to acknowledge his existence, to a lesser or greater extent. The advent of the new century saw a great flourishing of compositional styles and techniques that were largely the direct result of Wagner's influence. Not only that, the new century was to be one of great technological advance and invention. The gramophone and, later, the spread of radio, brought about massive changes in the way that ordinary people accessed and perceived music. Suddenly a whole new world of serious music was to open up to an audience that had hitherto been excluded from what had previously been, albeit unintentionally, an elitist art form. The works in this set of 16 CDs have been arranged in strict chronological order of composition and the first disc begins with a work from 1901 that has become one of the most popular works in the classical repertoire, mainly through it's use in another great 20th-century art form – the film: Rachmaninov's Second Piano Concerto. Thereafter each disc in the set takes the listener on a fascinating journey through the century, composer by composer and work by work, from Russian Romanticism, French Impressionism, English Pastoralism, Atonalism, Neo Classicism right up to Post Modernism, and from as wide a range of countries and genres as possible. |

London Philharmonic Orchestra, Marin Alsop This latest release documents premiere recordings of works by Mark-Anthony Turnage,
the London Philharmonic Orchestra’s Composer in Residence.
Ten years after its rst performance at the Aldeburgh Festival, Marin Alsop conducts a
studio performance of Turnage’s remarkable work for mezzo-soprano and chamber
ensemble, Twice Through the Heart. The piece is a collaboration with poet Jackie Kay
and explores the real-life story of an abused woman imprisoned for the murder of her
husband. The music is lyrical but abrupt, painful but often quiet and reective; one of
the composer’s most nely crafted, intensely moving and technically accomplished
works. ‘It’s almost made for Sarah’s [Connolly] voice’, says Turnage, ‘she gets very close
to the heart of it’.
The Torn Fields was also recorded in the studio, and is sung by baritone Gerald Finley, for
whom Turnage wrote the work in 2000-02. This often nightmarish, vivid glimpse of the
destruction of war using poetry from 1914-1918 is another example of the composer’s
extraordinary ability to create vocal lines that embody their texts. Turnage has himself
commented on the huge challenges he experiences when writing vocal music, but
concedes that ‘writing for Gerald Finley makes it easier…he is, in my view, one of the
greatest baritones around’.
Sandwiched between these works is a recording made live at the world première of
Turnage’s Hidden Love Song in January 2006. The soloist, Martin Robertson, is another
close friend and regular collaborator with Turnage, and this performance reveals the
sensitive, delicate nature of Turnage’s musical gift to his wife Gabriella Swallow. “Played with arching smoothness by Martin Robertson…Ultimately the piece is a love song, and a beautiful one.” The Guardian “Finley magnificent in the Turnage anti-war settings that crown a fine disc.” Gramophone Magazine, April 2008 | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

| | | Prelude, Fnugg and Riffs
Øystein Baadsvik (tuba) Swedish Wind Ensemble, Christian Lindberg This disc presents a highly varied programme centred on the combination of solo tuba and wind band. It covers a wide spectrum of styles, from the Concerto by Boris Diev (b. 1924) – a leading figure within the great Russian wind orchestra tradition – to Swedish composer Fredrik Högberg’s (b.1971) wisecracking and effect-laden Trolltuba, a re-telling of the folk tale Three Billy Goats Gruff. A highlight on the disc is tubaist/composer Baadsvik’s own piece, the unique Fnugg Blue, a highly enjoyable showcase for pioneering tuba techniques – including percussive effects and multiphonics “Bernstein's Prelude, Fugue and Riffs at last seems to have stood the test of time… Otherwise the disc is strictly for aficionados of performance rather than composition.” Gramophone Magazine, May 2008 | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

Quentin Hayes, Fiona Kimm, Richard Stuart, Helen Charnock, Richard Chance, David Miles & Barry Holland The Almeida Ensemble, conducted by Steven Berkoff. Directed by Peter Maniura and Jonathan Moore. Play written by Steven Berkoff. Greek, first performed in 1988, was composed on behalf of the Munich Biennale and is based on Steven Berkoff’s adaptation of Oedipus the King to a modern-day setting in London. It received its première in Munich and won the prizes for best opera and best libretto. It is a typical example of Turnage’s determinedly urban music. His compositional style is not consistently tonal, but remains accessible, colourful, often with aggressive effects, but always retaining an underlying lyricism, at times with a powerful dramatic impact and emotional power. Recorded at the Liverpool Warehouse, 1990. Sung in English | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |
