Camerata Schweiz, Howard Griffiths

Johann Baptist Vanhal numbers among the most productive composers of the eighteenth century. Among other works, seventy-seven symphonies and sixty solo concertos by him are documented. He was for quite some time, especially before the works of Haydn and Mozart became more widely known, one of the most popular and even one of the most renowned instrumental composers in Germany.

Here we have three genuinely gripping works (the symphonies in première recordings) by Vanhal performed by the Camerata Schweiz under Howard Griffiths.

Hipocondria Ensemble

“The concertos are all delightfully upbeat in character. As might be expected, there is little emphasis on polyphony or the exploitation of complicated textures. Rather, the composers all focus their attention on the melodic lines. In turn, the Hipocondria Ensemble's realisation of this tune and accompaniment approach is charmingly easy and graceful, with elegantly refined phrasing. This recording is a triumph of fine music-making” International Record Review, May 2011

Edicson Ruiz (double bass)

Orquesta Sinfónica Simón Bolívar, Christian Vasquez

Born in Caracas in 1985, Edicson Ruiz’ first taste of orchestral playing came with ‘El Sistema’, founded by José Antonio Abreu. Then, aged only 15, Edicson was awarded first prize at the International Society of Bassists´ competition in Indianapolis, making him the youngest winner of all time. Just two years later he was made a member of the Berlin Philharmonic´s double bass section, becoming not only the first Latin American musician to be so honoured but also the youngest ever in the history of the orchestra.

Edicson is also active as a soloist and has given recitals at the Berlin Philharmonie, Lucerne Festival, Edinburgh International Festival and the Chopin Festival in Warsaw.

Edicson Ruiz here turns his attention to the repertoire of the pre-Classical period, following in the footsteps of last great solo violonist Johann Hindle (1792-1862) by playing a four-stringed instrument with historical scordatura tuning.

Conductor Christian Vásquez is also a protégé of the internationally known Venezuelan ‘Sistema’ and is already established as one of the most promising talents from the Americas. Born in 1984 in Caracas, he studied under the tutelage of Maestro Abreu, who has been a great proponent of his career. His debut as a conductor with the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra took place in April 2008 in Caracas conducting Mahler’s Second Symphony.
