National Youth Choir of Great Britain, Mike Brewer Tallis's monumental Spem in alium is one of the greatest glories of Western polyphony, and its preechoes and aftershocks reverberate through all the other pieces on this disc. The massed voices of the National Youth Choir of Great Britain, in their 25th anniversary year, dazzle in this programme of choral jewels from the 15th and 16th centuries, interspersed with virtuoso tributes from three leading contemporary composers, including Gabriel Jackson's own 40-part motet. |

| | | World Premiere
Discovered in 1975 in manuscript 130 of the Biblioteca Nazionale
Vittorio Emmanuele II in Rome, these vesper psalms still do not
appear in the 'official' list of works by Victoria, yet there is now
no doubt of their attribution.Although the psalms were not
conceived for a single celebration or feast day, they are presented
here following the sequence of an office of Vespers, which
facilitates comprehension of their function. These previously
unknown works represent a genuine revelation. |

| | | The Golden Age
In the run up to their 40th Anniversay on May 1st the Kings Singers present the first of two albums on Signum Classics. Portugese, Spanish and Mexican music imbued with religious sensuousness from the 16th Century - the Siglo de Oro - performed by the world's most prestigious a cappella ensemble. This release mixes Hispanic music from both sides of the Atlantic with composers including Lobo, Vivanco, Morales, Victoria and Melgas. “Despite many changes of personnel over the past 40 years, the King's Singers maintain their unmistakable cool timbre, faultless intonation and smooth blend - almost too smooth at times in these examples of passionate, sensuous 16th-century Spanish, Portuguese and Mexican polyphony, the first release marking their anniversary...The Golden Age represents the Singers' bedrock repertoire - great examples of unaccompanied choral music sung with precision and insight by masters of their art.” The Observer, 27th April 2008 “The King's Singers perform with their customary clarity of line, rhythmic grace and attention to detail.” BBC Music Magazine, April 2008 “Lamentations can be glorious when delivered by these wonderful singers.” Gramophone Magazine, May 2008 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| Pilgrimage to Santiago
The Monteverdi Choir, John Eliot Gardiner recorded: All Hallows, Gospel Oak, London - May 2005 Being a man for great
journeys of exploration,
John Eliot Gardiner took
his Monteverdi Choir on
a musical pilgrimage to
Santiago in 2004. The
concerts they gave along
the route have yielded
this superb album. All
the composers have a
connection with Spain,
so Morales and Mouton
are set alongside Dufay
and Victoria, marvellous
performances all. - Gramophone Magazine “Unaccompanied, the Monteverdi Choir goes back to its roots in a programme which harnesses scholarship and singing of breathtaking beauty.” Gramophone Magazine, October 2008 BBC Music Magazine

| | | Requiem
Armonico Consort, Christopher Monks Victoria composed one of the most astonishing settings of the Requiem Mass, probing deeply both into theological meaning and into the complexity of human emotions.
Victoria uses the Requiem Mass to paint a musical portrait of grief, where time stands still and the world, a different place through the veil of sorrow, moves slowly, sometimes painfully. The polyphony is solemn but incredibly intense; dissonance, which might usually be short, is augmented to draw out the hurt, passion and confusion. | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |
