La Serenissima, Adrian Chandler

After the extremely successful and acclaimed series ‘The Rise of the North Italian Violin Concerto’ Adrian Chandler and La Serenissima return to AVIE to explore another side of Vivaldi’s compositions : The French Connection.

“The voracity with which the French devoured Italian music during the late baroque period is well documented. Vivaldi was involved in both the dissemination of the French style in Italy and that of the Italian style in France. His works achieved fashionable status there in the late 1720s thanks to his concertos Le Quattro Stagioni which became a feature at the popular Concert Spirituel (between 1728 and 1763).” Adrian Chandler

“Chandler is an impeccably stylish soloist in two violin concertos. Throughout, he also directs La Serenissima in eloquently precise but excitingly spontaneous performances of unfailingly imaginative music” Sunday Times, 5th July 2009 ***

“In the flamboyant double-dots of the C-minor concerto, the melancholy groundbass of the G-minor concerto and the delicious closing Chaconne of the C-major, the playing is consistently zestful. Chandler, flautist Katy Bircher and bassoonist Peter Whelan play a further series of exacting concertos with the effortless musicality of birds.” The Independent on Sunday, 25th July 2009

“…the three solo instruments come and go in various combinations, always pleasing us and never outstaying their welcome. They are played with skill and taste… The orchestral sound, as always with La Serenissima, achieves bright attractiveness and vivacity without feeling the need to pursue the taut energy of some other groups. And that's just fine.” Gramophone Magazine, Awards Issue 2009

“The performances… are typically neatly-pointed and vivacious.” BBC Music Magazine, October 2009 ****

Vivaldi - Opera and Oratorio arias

Vivaldi - Opera and Oratorio arias

Vivaldi:

Sonno se pur sei sonno from Tito Manlio, RV738

Armatae face et anguibus (from Juditha Triumphans)

Solo quella guancia bella from La verita` in cimento, RV739

Gelido in ogni vena (from Il Farnace, RV711)

Tornar voglio al primo ardore from Arsilda, regina di Ponto, RV700

Misero spirto mio from Ottone in villa, RV729

Nel profondo from Orlando Furioso

Forse, o caro, in questi accenti from Farnace

Cara sorte di chi nata from La verita' in cimento

Ho il cor già lacero from Griselda, RV718

Non mi lusinga vana speranza from L’incoronazione di Dario

Lo stridor, l'orror d' Averno from Orlando finto pazzo, RV727

Qual favellar?...Anderò, volerò, griderò (from Orlando finto pazzo)

Mentre dormi amor fomenti from L’Olimpiade

Kožená’s own selection of Vivaldi opera and oratorio arias emphasizes the gentler moods she is acclaimed for (Sol da te), but also shows off fierce Vivaldi virtuosity (Nel profondo)

The suggestive Gelido in ogni vena is based on The Four Seasons’ “Winter” movement

Following her avidly received Handel album Kožená’s return collaboration with the VBO and maestro Andrea Marcon will rejoice her fans and make her new ones

“Magdalena Kozená has almost become the Barack Obama of mezzo-sopranos. With that mesmerising voice, that magnetic personality, everybody wants a piece of her, after the Handel recital last year she raids the Baroque pleasure dome again, with 15 Vivaldi opera arias, largely unfamiliar, sung naturally in Italian.” The Times, 5th June 2009 ***

“Kozená is a technically assured singer who can give Bartoli a run for her money in a virtuoso martial aria such as “Armatae face” from Juditha Triumphans.... Highlights of the recital include the enchantingly wry and playful “Cara sorte” from La verità in cimento and “Gelido in ogni venta” from Farnace , which recycles material from The Four Seasons .” The Telegraph, 1st July 2009 ****

“…redolent with that distinctive Vivaldian poetry are hauntingly beautiful arias from Farnace, L'Olimpiade and Orlando furioso. Their lyrical appeal and expression of deep emotions are affecting, enlivened and intensified at every turn by Kožená's vocal colour and intuitive responses. The Venice Baroque Orchestra is both complementary and supportive throughout.” BBC Music Magazine, September 2009 *****

“The decision to pack the programme with slower and subtler arias pays dividends: "Sonno, se pur sei sonno" (Tito Manlio) is a quietly ravishing opener, "Sol da te" (Orlando furioso) features beguiling flute-playing by Michele Favaro, and the disc concludes with an exquisite interpretation of "Mentre dormi" (L'Olimpiade). There is plenty of dramatic bite on offer... especially in the compellingly taut "Gelido in ogni vena" (based on the opening of "Winter" from the Four Seasons), as Kožená eloquently conveys Farnace's icy shock that he has unwittingly condemned his son to death. There haven't been many captivating Vivaldi opera aria anthologies, but this is definite among the most intriguing, theatrically varied and convincing.” Gramophone Magazine, September 2009

" I have never heard a performance of Vivaldi's Four Seasons quite like this one … Harnoncourt has given us something of undeniable originality and craftsmanship" Gramophone

“Harnoncourt's Four Seasons are still among the most fanciful on disc, with subtle accents and violent dynamic contrasts. The other eight concertos, if a touch mannered, are exuberant despite a dry and noisy ambience.” BBC Music Magazine, September 2009 ****

Modo Antiquo, Federico Maria Sardelli

Last year, Federico Maria Sardelli, who has made several contributions to the Vivaldi Edition, was appointed to take charge of the Vivaldi catalogue. It is now his job to authenticate any further manuscripts that turn up in what may be Vivaldi’s hand. Over the past ten years, thanks in part to the stimulus of the Vivaldi Edition project, several manuscripts by Vivaldi have surfaced in different countries. Federico Maria Sardelli has decided to record the finest of them. So this recording does indeed present new works by Vivaldi. The content is very diverse, ranging from a motet, which is performed by the mezzo-soprano Romina Basso, to an Oboe Concerto, a Recorder Concerto, arias and other gems. There is a clear pattern to these discoveries. Almost all come from peripheral sources, and most appear to originate from special commissions at the margin of the composer’s activity. The most imposing of the new works introduced here is a solo motet for contralto and strings, Vos invito, barbarae faces, RV811, only recently unearthed by Valerio Losito and Renato Criscuolo in the library of the basilica of S. Francesco, Assisi. The work is anonymous but is attributed to Vivaldi persuasively by Federico Maria Sardelli on the basis of several passages recurring in authenticated Vivaldi works.

“This disc has some attractive novelties: an oboe concerto found among the big Berlin Sing-Akademie library; a violin sonata, lurking in an online catalogue, which is a real addition to the recital repertory; and a couple of isolated opera arias plus a motet, sung by Romina Basso.” The Observer, 12th July 2009

“Sardelli's band Modo Antiquo deliver turbulent music with vigorous refinement and successfully convey the fizzy excitement and fantasy of Vivaldi's writing. "se lento ancora il fulmine"… is magnificently sung by Romina Basso, whose masterful technique, clear delivery of text and expression of vocal phrases is also showcased in the motet Vos invito, barbarae faces (RV811... ) Basso's ornamentation is spellbinding here...” Gramophone Magazine, Awards Issue 2009

Il Pianto di Maria - The Virgin's Lament

Conti:

Sento già mancar la vita (from Il Martirio di S. Lorenzo)

Ferrandini:

Il Pianto di Maria

wrongly attributed to G.F.Handel (HWV 234)

Marini, B:

Passacaglia à 4, Op. 22

Monteverdi:

Pianto della Madonna 'Iam moriar, mi fili' (sopra il Lamento dell'Arianna), SV 288

Pisendel:

Violin Sonata in C minor

Vivaldi:

Concerto for Strings in E flat major 'Sonata al Santo Sepolcro', RV130

Concerto for Strings in D minor RV 129 'Madrigalesco'

Sinfonia in B minor, RV169 'Al Santo Sepolcro'

Rare recordings of two settings of Mary’s passionate Easter lament. For their second L’Oiseau Lyre disc, Il Giardino Armonico, again under their director Giovanni Antonini, are joined by celebrated mezzo-soprano Bernarda Fink, for a project exploring the Passion of Christ as seen through the eyes of the Virgin Mary. The two central works are both vocal settings of the Virgin’s lament. The first, Il Pianto di Maria, was long thought to be by Handel – a clear reflection of its outstanding musical quality. It was not until the 1990s that handwriting experts established it as the work of the little-known Venetian composer Giovanni Ferrandini. The other key vocal work will be the World Premiere recording of an aria by Francesco Conti – composer to the Habsburg court of Vienna - in which the martyr Lorenzo, threatened with being burnt alive, refuses to deny his Christian faith. This deeply touching aria features a rarely heard ancestor of the modern clarinet, frequently used in ‘pathetic’ arias of the period – the soprano chalumeau. Short instrumental pieces form a musical setting around these vocal jewels, and include music by Caldara, Marini, Pisendel, Weiss and Vivaldi.

“The playing of Il Giardino Armonico under Giovanni Antonini is very fine, and the mezzo-soprano soloist Bernarda Fink is tremendously expressive.” The Telegraph, 21st April 2009 ***

“Fink sings… with fervour and unassuming charm, supported by the sensitive playing of Il Giardino Armonico. This talented ensemble comes into its own in the five short instrumental pieces on the disc. A satisfying issue, imaginatively devised and excellently performed.” BBC Music Magazine, July 2009 *****

“…Monteverdi's Pianto della Madonna… an adaptation to sacred works - of the Lament from Arianna, composed in 1608. It works well, and Bernarda Fink sings it with an affecting mixture of restraint and passion. The instrumental pieces are done well, and this well planned disc is very desirable.” Gramophone Magazine, September 2009

Vivaldi: La Fida Ninfa

Vivaldi: La Fida Ninfa

premier recording

La Fida Ninfa premiered during the Verona carnival of 1732 at the Teatro Filarmonico. The work was composed to help celebrate the opening of the theatre, which had been postponed for two years, since at that time, the city had been surrounded by foreign military troops. The production was spectacular, and included elaborate ballets by Andrea Cattani, a famous ballet master from Poland, as well as sumptuous sets by Francesco Bibiena.

This new release from Naive is the ninth opera to be featured in the label’s ongoing Vivaldi Edition, a project launched in 2000 with the aim of recording the massive collection of Vivaldi autograph manuscripts preserved today in the Biblioteca Nazionale Universitaria in Turin. The collection includes fifteen operas and several hundred concertos, as well as sacred compositions and secular cantatas, most of which has not been heard since the eighteenth century. This is the fourth opera in the series to be performed by Ensemble Matheus under the direction of Jean-Christophe Spinosi. The previous three, Griselda, Orlando Furioso and La Verita in Cimento have received many international accolades, including a BBC Music Magazine Award for Griselda in 2007.

“Vivaldi's score is a ravishing one, offering a rewarding sequence of beguiling arias, duets, a trio and a quartet. Sandrine Piau (Licori) and Verónica Cangemi (Morasto) take on the considerable vocal challenges of demanding roles with their usual tonal warmth and bravura, while Marie-Nicole Lemieux (Elpina) provides the necessary emotional contrasts. Topi Lehtipuu is a touchingly melancholic Narete, and Philippe Jaroussky an eloquently, sometimes passionately love-sick Osmino. Altogether a splendid achievement by Jean-Christophe Spinosi and his musicians.” BBC Music Magazine, March 2009 ****

“..the music screams for attention on CD, as this superb French studio recording proves. One aria of scorching invention follows another, often bedecked with nimbly illustrative orchestral finery...In the hands of Spinosi’s crack team, La fida ninfa is a spectacular baroque rediscovery, and resistance is pointless.” The Times, 3rd July 2009 ****

“The music is so gorgeous and erotic that your qualms evaporate and you surrender to it, I'm afraid. It would also be hard to imagine it better done than it is here. Jean-Christophe Spinosi's conducting is infinitely pleasurable.” The Guardian, 24th July 2009 *****

“Those familiar with Ensemble Matheus will expect the immediate plunge into fizzing energy… Much of the singing is marvellous. Sandrine Piau's limpid messa di voce and breathtaking technique in "Selve annose", and her delivery of fiendish coloratura in "Alma oppressa da sorte crudele", are astonishing even for her. "Deh, ti piega", one of Vivaldi's finest arias for the tenor voice, is sung tenderly by Topi Lehtipuu.” Gramophone Magazine, September 2009

100 Best Menuhin

100 Best Menuhin

100 BEST MENUHIN is another release in EMI’s highly successful 100 BEST series.

This 6 CD set presents 100 highlights from the extensive catalogue of the legendary violinist Yehudi Menuhin.

Yehudi Menuhin (1916–1999) was one of the greatest musical figures of the 20th century. Throughout his entire life, he distinguished himself as a musician of the highest calibre, as well as an educator, a musical statesman and a compassionate and caring human being.

After making a few recordings of short encore pieces in 1928 for RCA Victor in the USA (the country of his birth), he began recording in 1929 for The Gramophone Company (one of the predecessor companies of EMI) and was an exclusive EMI artist for the remaining 70 years of his life – an achievement without parallel in the history of the record industry.

The six CDs are themed as follows:

CD 1: Vivaldi

CD 2: Bach and Mozart

CD 3: Beethoven and Brahms

CD 4: The Romantic Era

CD 5: Showpieces and Encores

CD 6: Menuhin the Adventurer

The Vivaldi CD includes a complete performance of The Four Seasons, as well as four other popular concertos including The Storm at Sea, The Hunt and Pleasure.

CD 2 contains a representative selection of Menuhin’s many recordings of Bach and Mozart, including Bach’s Concerto for Violin and Oboe with Leon Goossens that enjoyed enormous success when a performance was televised by the BBC in the UK in 1962.

The violin concertos of Beethoven and Brahms were among the cornerstones of Menuhin’s repertoire. CD 3 includes substantial extracts from both of these concertos, as well as other popular pieces by the two composers.

CD 4 includes extracts from some of Menuhin’s most successful concerto recordings, including those of Mendelssohn, Bruch and Paganini. The disc ends with the conclusion of Elgar’s Violin Concerto, recorded in 1932 under the baton of the composer – one of the most famous recordings ever made.

CD 5 is devoted to showpieces and encores by composers such as Bazzini, Kreisler, Sarasate, Brahms and Paganini. These recordings, made in the 1930s, show the young Menuhin at the height of his technical powers.

Menuhin was always interested in new works, many of which were commissioned for him, and CD 6 includes several examples of such pieces. He also loved to explore different styles of music as exemplified by his collaborations with the Indian sitar player Ravi Shankar and the French jazz violinist Stéphane Grappelli heard here as well.

This set of 50 CDs contains some of Sir Yehudi Menuhin's most celebrated EMI recordings, made during the 70-year period that he recorded for the Company, and commemorates the tenth anniversary of his death on 12 March 1999.

Arguably the best-known classical musician of the 20th century, Yehudi Menuhin was born on 22 April 1916 in New York City. In 1918 his family moved to San Francisco where he had his first violin lessons, aged four, with Sigmund Anker. At seven he gave his first public performance accompanied by his then teacher, Louis Persinger. A year later, in 1925, he gave his first full-length recital, also with Persinger. 1926 saw him make his New York début and later that year he gave a performance of Lalo's Symphonie espagnole with the San Francisco Orchestra.

In 1927, at the age of ten, Menuhin made his European début in Paris playing with the Lamoureux Orchestra under Paul Paray. Back in New York he gave his first concerto concert with the New York Symphony Orchestra under Fritz Busch and in 1928 he made his first recording for the Victor Company. 1929 was equally eventful for the young Menuhin: he was given a Stradivarius violin; made his Berlin début with the Berlin Philharmonic under Bruno Walter; began studies with Adolf Busch; he gave his début in London and made his first HMV recording.

In 1931 Menuhin made his first concerto recording, Bruch Concerto No.1 in London for HMV and in 1932, at the age of 16, he made what was to become one of the most iconic classical recordings of all time when he went to EMI's new Abbey Road Studios to record the Elgar Concerto with the composer and the London Symphony Orchestra. This event put Menuhin firmly on the international map as one of the great violin virtuosi of the century and he continued to be a prolific recording artist for EMI, both as violinist and conductor, for the rest of his long career.

"There are baroque bands that are frankly dull and there are others on whom stylistic felicity sits naturally and gracefully; Il Giardino Armonico, an 11-strong period-instrument group of young Italians, is one of the most joyous to have come my way." Gramophone
