Together with David Oistrakh, violinist Leonid Kogan (1924-1982) ranked at the top of the Russian/Jewish School of violin playing. Kogan began concertizing as a child prodigy and played the Brahms Violin Concerto at 17 with the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra. He graduated from the Moscow conservatory in 1948. In 1951 Kogan won the First Prize at the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Bruxelles. He started concertizing in the West in 1955 with debuts in Paris and London, followed iin later years with tours of North and South America. His command of the violin and technical control was immaculate and brilliant - similar to Heifetz's - though he had his own, different sound colours, vibrato and individual musical ethos combined with expressivity and impassioned lyricism. Kogan's recording legacy demonstrates his lush, sensuous tone, electric vibrancy and intensity. He left us a recording legacy of magnificent interpretations of the standard violin repertoire of concertos and sonatas and of stunning renditions of virtuoso works by Paganini, Wieniawski and Sarasate as well as many chamber works. Presented here are 1958 live performances of Kogan's American debut: Brahms violin concerto with the Boston Symphony /Monteux and New York Philharmonic/Mitropoulos. First release ever !
