Those who feel disillusioned with razzmatazz documentaries… would do well to watch Phil Grabsky's In Search of Mozart. Its honesty, sincerity, integrity and transparent love for the music had me hooked from the first few seconds. Grabsky superbly sets Mozart's childhood into both domestic and musical contexts, and deals with every important issue succinctly. Juliet Stevenson rarely intrudes as narrator. Instead, the main method for telling the story is well judged readings of original documents set to contemporary paintings, engravings, and modern footage of all the important locations. Sam West reads Mozart's letters... with expert observations... provided by an amazing list of interviewees including Christophe Rousset, Sir Roger Norrington, René Jacobs, Gerald Finley, Sir Charles Mackerras, Sir Thomas Allen and Ronald Brautigam.
