The Parisian public had to wait until 1958, more than half a century after the performance conducted by Mahler himself for a return to concert programmes of the Second Symphony, after a long period of mistrust in France.The approaching centenary of Mahler’s birth in 1960 must have helped, as we too have noted as 2010/2011 approach! It was conducted twice at the Theatre aux Champs-Elysses in 1958: on February 20th, by Carl Schuricht, and on November 13th by the 40-year old Leonard Bernstein, both with the RTF. The first of these has been on the market for some time. It is only fitting that the second now become available.
