The Polish musical culture of the turn of the twentieth century regarded Franciszek Brzeziński as a critic and journalist rather than a composer. A lawyer by profession, Brzeziński studied music with Jan Kleczyński and Max Reger. He left behind several solo piano pieces, a Piano Concerto and an imaginative Violin Sonata in D major. His best solo piano efforts include the Triptych op. 5 awarded at the Fryderyk Chopin Competition in Lwów in 1910 and the Theme with Variations op. 3. Brzeziński was in charge of musical reviews in Kurier Warszawski between 1916 and 1921, and held the same position in Nowiny Muzyczne (1929) and Rzeczpospolita (1930-1931). He also published his articles in Sztuka, Muzyka, Muzyka Polska, and wrote the biography of Bedřich Smetana, which was brought out in Warsaw in 1933.
