About

The five String Trios are masterpieces of the young Ludwig van Beethoven as he travels towards the string quartet: however, many musicians and scholars have preferred the mature Trios Op. 9 to the subsequent String Quartets Op. 18. With their new double CD, the Thibaud Trio provide an opportunity to rediscover these milestones in the history of the string trio.

Prize-winners in the prestigious 1999 Bonn Chamber Music Competition, the Jacques Thibaud String Trio was founded at the Hochschule der Künste Berlin (today: Universität der Künste) in 1994. In its early stages the ensemble was closely related to Laszlo Varga (solo cellist of the New York Philharmonic, cellist of the Borodin Trio) and the pianist Gyorgy Sebók. Later on important artistic impulses came from Adolphe Mandeau and Markus Nyikos. Today the trio consists of Burkhard Maiß (violin), Hannah Strijbos (viola) and Bogdan Jianu (cello).

In the Op. 8 Serenade the Jacques Thibaud Trio capture well the outdoorsy character, particularly in the uproarious March…I like, too, the tempo [they] choose for the first movement of the Op. 3, which is faster than some, giving Beethoven's abrupt changes of mood a sense of complete inevitability…if Trio Zimmermann is too extreme for your tastes, the Thibaud Trio may well appeal.

the Thibaud Trio produces a brisk, sprightly and woody-sounding scherzo in op.9 no.1 and a surprisingly easy-going rondo in op.9 no.2, which even acquires a note of nonchalance in its toppling canonic phrases. The C minor op.9 no.3, the most inherently dramatic of the string trios, is the one that seems to flourish in these players’ hands.
