| | | Amadeus Quartet play Haydn & Mozart
Founded in 1947, the Amadeus Quartet dominated the British chamber music scene for over 40 years. The quartet was renowned for its impeccable ensemble playing as well as sensitive interpretation, making over 200 recordings during their four decades together, which ended with Peter Schidlof’s death in 1987 – just four years after the Royal Opera House performance on this DVD. The quartet’s Wigmore Hall debut in 1948 was sold out with hundreds turned away at the door. Particularly well known for performances of the Viennese Classics, the ensemble’s core repertoire included all three works on this DVD, performed here with great warmth and exuberance. Norbert Brainin’s standard answer to how the Amadeus Quartet was able to reach such great mastery of interpretation was that they ‘simply listened into the music – again and again’. The Penguin Guide praises the quartet’s DG recording of the later Haydn quartets as ‘bright and truthful’ with a ‘warm acoustic and plenty of presence’ – ‘outstanding’. All four members were awarded an OBE, the German Great Cross of Merit, and the Austrian Cross of Honour for Arts and Sciences. This is the first DVD release of this material. 1DVD Sound format: Enhanced Mono Picture format: 4:3 Running time: 75’ Subtitles: n/a Menu languages: English Booklet languages: E/F/G Region code: 0 Territory Restrictions: None “High-powered, boldly etched, larger-than-life, impassioned 1980s performances” BBC Music Magazine, September 2012 *** | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | William Steinberg conducts Beethoven & Haydn
This series of DVDs will make the publicly broadcast BSO concerts from this era available for the first time since they were broadcast. This rare material, filmed in colour, represents some of the earliest televised concerts with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and William Steinberg, and has been restored using the greatest care and state-of-the-art techniques. It is of exceptional musical interest and historic value. The BSO’s Music Director for just three seasons, Steinberg spent a great deal of time in the USA, having left Europe following Music Director positions in Cologne, Prague and Frankfurt. He also co-founded the Palestine Orchestra, later the Israel Philharmonic. His time with the BSO came at the end of his career following his position as the Music Director of Pittsburgh Symphony, which he held for over twenty years. Steinberg’s precise and minimalist technique belies the intensity with which the orchestra responds to his baton – the performances are lively and full of character. Steinberg’s CD release of Mahler’s Second Symphony on ICA Classics has received excellent reviews, described by Gramophone as ‘a startlingly direct statement of a score that is too often treated to extremes of mood and tempo’ – and by Classics Today as having ‘moments that set a new standard in this music’. The Haydn is new to Steinberg’s discography. Two of ICA’s BSO DVDs featuring Charles Munch as conductor, have been awarded the Diapason d’Or in France’s Diapason magazine. Picture format: 4:3 Running time: 86’ Subtitles: n/a Menu languages: English Booklet languages: E/F/G Region code: 0 Territory Restrictions: None “Precise yet expressive, Steinberg's Beethoven Symphonies Nos 7 & 8 are models of clarity and rhythmic dynamism. The Haydn is excellent.” BBC Music Magazine, May 2012 **** “Useful documentation of a conductor whose time with the orchestra was short.” MusicWeb International, June 2012 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

“This enjoyable performance of Haydn's supreme choral masterpiece was recorded at the Lucerne Festival of 1992. It takes place in the appropriate setting of an evocative baroque church, which isn't identified either on screen or in the (inadequate) supporting booklet. The small choir sings with attentive enthusiasm, and is weak only in the tenor department. The Scottish Chamber Orchestra players cover themselves in glory both as an ensemble and individually, and they're adept at imposing period practice on modern instruments. Schreier's direction is relaxed and benevolent, yet his keen ear for rhythmic precision and flexibility in phrasing is constantly felt. The soloists are all Swiss. The veteran Mathis remains a paragon of classical style, phrasing her arias and contributions to the ensembles with firm tone and finely honed phrasing. Prégardien's liquid, silvery tenor and sensitive way with words is just what the tenor part calls for. The young Pape's sonorous bass and confident delivery are ideal; he and Mathis make an appealing Adam and Eve in Part 3. The video direction is discreet, and prompt in homing in on the right performer at the right time. The sound picture is as spacious and well defined.” Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010 | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

| | | Christoph Von Dohnányi - In Rehearsal
Recording the In Rehearsal programme, the cameras were witnessing part of the process of development of a new relationship between an orchestra and its Music Director. Dohnányi is seen working with the Philharmonia on Haydn’s Symphony No. 88 in G for a concert in their 1998 Haydn/Bartók series at London’s Royal Festival Hall. It was to be Dohnányi’s first Haydn performance with the orchestra and so the limited time available for preparation was of vital importance. The musician’s appreciation of his musically precise and exacting approach is evident in the concentrated atmosphere of rehearsals and also in comments they make about working with the maestro. Stage: Nigel Lowery and Amir Hosseinpour Recorded live at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, Berlin, 8 May 2009 Directed for TV by Andreas Morell • Produced by Paul Smaczny In the Summer of 2009, the British director Nigel Lowery and the Iranian choreographer Amir Hosseinpour brought to the stage the fantastic and imaginative adventures of ‘Racing Roland’. Haydn’s most renowned opera in his lifetime, Orlando Paladino, was performed on the 200th anniversary of his death under the musical direction of period-music specialist René Jacobs. Freiburg Baroque Orchestra completed this high-class production giving the music a classy sound and lively swing. TV Format NTSC 16:9 anamorphic Sound PCM Stereo Dolby Digital 5.1 • DTS 5.1 Subtitles: It, Eng, Fr, Ger Region Code 0 (worldwide) Running Time 168 mins “Anyone doubting Haydn's validity as an opera composer should try this...the vocal performances are consistently good. In the title role, Tom Randle's inventive vocalism and detailed physicality see him through a sequence of mad scenes...René Jacobs and the Freiburg players ensure light textures and liveliness throughout.” BBC Music Magazine, May 2010 **** “...the staging's zany, over-the-top energy makes an entertaining case for an opera longer on purely musical delights than on subtlety of characterisation...this DVD could well convert those still unconvinced that Haydn's comic operas, for all their musical beauties, can be made to work in the theatre.” Gramophone Magazine, July 2010 | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |
