This performance in the beautiful historic concert hall of Schloss Esterhazy in Eisenstadt (Austria) is a tribute to one of the world's greatest musical genius, Joseph Haydn, on the occasion of his 200th anniversary of death in 1809. Joseph Haydn spent most his life in Eisenstadt at Schloss Esterhazy. The Concert was recorded at the historical venue at Schloss Esterhazy Eisenstadt, Austria in May 2009. The Austro-Hungarian Haydn Orchestra, founded in 1987 by internationally renowned conductor Adam Fischer, consists of musicians from the Vienna Phil and the main Budapest-based orchestras. Thomas Quasthoff's Birthday celebration in November 2009 will draw a lot of attention to this latest recording, (Nov 9, 1959) and he garnered rave reviews for his performances in this role, earlier this year with René Jacobs at the Barbican. This live-broadcast of The Creation represents a DVD media highlight of Haydn-year 2009. NTSC 16:9, PCM Stereo, DD 5.1, DTS 5.1 Region code: 0 Original language: German Subtitles: English, French, German Booklet Notes: French, German, English Running time: 108 mins Audience: all “…the chamber choir is finely disciplined and light on its collective feet, the orchestra has good period manners and conductor Adam Fischer provides firm and keenly motivated direction. Baritone Thomas Quasthoff is in a league of his own: there's an intensity to his lyricism that ruses to a sense of wonder as he contemplates the marvels of the natural world, and throughout his singing is purposeful and direct. The filming of this live concert is entirely straightforward and without any fancy camerawork. No extras attached to the DVD, but there's a good general introduction to the piece contained in the accompanying booklet.” BBC Music Magazine, January 2010 *** | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

| | | Haydn - Harmony Mass
An especially festive atmosphere, in which we can participate both acoustically and visually with this DVD, was the dominant mood of this concert in the famous Abbey Basilica of Waldsassen in the Upper Palatinate. Among lovers of baroque church architecture, Waldsassen ranks as one of the most significant sacred buildings in Bavaria. The lush setting also includes the richest treasure-trove of relics north of the Alps. In addition to the Symphony in G major, Hob. I:88 and the Sinfonia D major, Hob. Ia:7, the performance in Waldsassen in October of 2008 also included Franz Joseph Haydn’s Harmony Mass. 2.0 PCM Stereo 5.0 DTS Surround 5.0 Dolby Digital Surround “…filmed in the splendid surround of the ornate Baroque Basilica at Waldsassen, Bavaria… The Mass, with its grand and regularly celebratory liturgical manner, four soloists and chorus, seems particularly well suited to the venue and Brian Large's filming is intelligent in its focus on whatever is happening musically in the score at any given moment. The performance is of a very high standard... Mariss Jansons seeks out the humanity of Haydn's ideas, their wit... and their character...” BBC Music Magazine, February 2010 ***** | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

| | | Live Recording from The Grosses Festspielhaus Salzburg, 1990
The Salzburg Festival summer of 1990 provided a wealth of artistic highlights. One of the very last highlights of the final weekend of the festival, however, was Riccardo Muti conducting Joseph Haydn’s oratorio The Creation in the Grosses Festspielhaus – a matinee performance transmitted live in sound and pictures to Salzburg’s Domplatz, where the rows of seats were crammed with music lovers from all over the world. Certainly this performance brought together no ordinary ensemble of musicians, even by Salzburg Festival standards. In addition to the Vienna Philharmonic and the Chorus of the Vienna State Opera – two artist collectives that have earned virtual rights of residence at the festival since its establishment – we are treated to a line-up of soloists chosen not simply for their star quality but also for their suitability for the roles, led by the radiant soprano voice of Lucia Popp, the Mexican-born Francisco Araiza, internationally renowned American Samuel Ramey, German baritone Olaf Bär and the German mezzo-soprano Iris Vermillon. All things considered, the recording by Austrian television that forms the basis of this DVD captures an uncommonly joyous matinee of musical entertainment – not always what one has come to expect from summer music festivals. Sound Format: PCM STEREO DVD Format: DVD 9, NTSC Picture Format: 4:3 Subtitle Languages: DE, GB, FR, JP FSK: 0 Running Time: 120 mins “There is plenty of glamour, and Muti is excitingly dramatic.” BBC Music Magazine, June 2010 **** | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

| | | Günter Wand conducts Bruckner & HaydnLive Recording from The Musik- Und Kongresshalle, Lübeck
Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, 7th July 1996 Few conductors have made a greater contribution to our presentday understanding of Bruckner than Günter Wand (1912-2002). His readings of the composer‘s symphonies invariably concentrated on their texture and hence, their spirit. During the great final phase of his career, documented here, Wand devoted himself increasingly to Bruckner‘s works and his interpretations became more and more free, revealing both heartfelt emotion and musical intelligence. He developed trademark fidelity towards Bruckner, which led to insightful readings of his works. Wherever possible Wand returned to the versions representing most clearly the composer‘s intentions - be it the „urtext“ or scrupulously restored versions. In the television recording of Bruckner’s Symphony No.6, Günter Wand and his inimitable style of conducting are brought back to life in a particularly impressive way. The films of his concerts at the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, from 1987 onwards, can truly be regarded as Günter Wand‘s legacy to the NDR Sinfonieorchester, „his“ orchestra for almost 20 years, on which he has left a mark like no other. The comic leads are ideally cast...an inventive, thoroughly entertaining performance of a zany, sometimes touching comedy. If you're still sceptical about Haydn's operas, this may convert you.” Gramophone Magazine, January 2010 “[Genaux] sings with easy flexibility and sophisticated style...The rich-voiced mezzo Maite Beaumont's Lisetta does well with the patter...Bahrmann sings strongly, with fine coloratura...[Harnoncourt] is at the helm of his ensemble, the Concentus Musicus Wien, which responds to his every intention with spirited accomplishment.” International Record Review, January 2011 | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

| | | Live Recording from The Basilika Ottobeuren, 1982
Arthaus presents the performance of Haydn’s Missa Sanctae Ceaciliae conducted by Rafael Kubelík live from the Basilika Ottobeuren. The work was without doubt one of the highlights of the wonderful Kubelík era. Under his guidance the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks also became one of the world’s foremost Haydn orchestras. When the orchestra discovered the baroque Basilica of Ottobeuren as the perfect venue for sacred music of the classic-romantic repertoire, their concerts enjoyed huge popularity, leaving a lasting impression on those who experienced them at first hand.
