Fantasiestücke, Op. 73

Cello Masterclass from The International Musicians' Seminar, Prussia Cove

Steven Isserlis, one of the world's outstanding cellists, is a musician known for his strong ideas and passionate convictions about music. As well as giving concerts and recitals throughout the world, he is much sought after as a teacher. He is Artistic Director of the International Musicians' Seminar at Prussia Cove in Cornwall UK, the world-renowned residential workshop for talented young musicians, started by Hilary Behrens and the legendary Sandor Vegh.

In this masterclass, he works on the Robert Schumann's Fantasiestücke, a group of three "Fantasy Pieces" originally written for clarinet and piano but later arranged for cello and piano by Schumann himself.

Age is certainly no barrier for Laloum, who has already played at many of the major venues in Europe. His impressive debut at the 2010 Verbier Festival is shared here in a live recording. Laloum’s sensitive and expressive playing is perfect for this program of nineteenth- and early twentieth-century works for solo piano, which includes pieces by Schubert, Schumann, Brahms and Debussy.

Kurt Sanderling conducts Mahler & Schumann

Kurt Sanderling conducts Mahler & Schumann

Royal Albert Hall, London, 29 July 1988

Mahler:

Das Lied von der Erde

Carolyn Watkinson & John Mitchinson

Schumann:

Symphony No. 4 in D minor, Op. 120

Some of the greatest conductors have worked with the BBC Philharmonic – Sanderling (b.1912), conducting here in 1987, knew the orchestra well having first conducted them some 13 years previously when they were known as the BBC Northern Symphony Orchestra.

Sanderling has had an illustrious career with orchestras such as the Leningrad Philharmonic, Berlin Symphony Orchestra, Dresden Staatskapelle and the Philharmonia, retiring only 9 years ago.

The BBC Legends recording of his Mahler 9 with the BBC Philharmonic from 1982 received excellent reviews.

John Mitchinson, often chosen for the tenor role in Das Lied von der Erde, performed the work many times with the BBC Philharmonic to great acclaim, with two BBC Legends recordings featured in the Penguin Guide – ‘his voice focuses ever more securely through the work with many cleanly ringing top notes’‘John Mitchinson is here at his finest, contrasting his firm, heroic tone in the first song against delicate half-tones, using his head-voice.’

Known for enjoying live performances and having an affinity for late Mahler, Sanderling’s reading of Das Lied von der Erde is inherently musical.

This is the first DVD release of this material.

“Sanderling's Schumann's Fourth Symphony is robust, his Mahler Lied von der Erde (Mitchinson and Watkinson in marvellous voice) strangely Olympian.” BBC Music Magazine, January 2012 ****

“Sanderling makes it all seem relatively effortless, elevating Mahler to the proverbial Olympian heights with no visible means of support...[he] is blessed with singers highly compatible with his interpretation. The versatile tenor John Mitchinson soars comfortably even in the peice's highest registers, and mezzo-soprano Carolyn Watkinson - best known for singing Baroque repertory - brings to Mahler a comparable sense of musical and emotional transparency.” Gramophone Magazine, January 2012

Charles Munch conducts Schubert & Schumann

Charles Munch conducts Schubert & Schumann

Schubert:

Symphony No. 5 in B flat major, D485

Sanders Theatre, Harvard University, 27 February 1962

Schumann:

Genoveva Overture

Sanders Theatre, Harvard University, 18 April 1961

Symphony No. 2 in C major, Op. 61

Sanders Theatre, Harvard University, 7 April 1959

Access to the publicly broadcast BSO concerts from this era has been extremely difficult even for researchers. This series of DVDs will make these performances available for the first time since they were broadcast.

Munch launched the BSO into television in 1955. He was an immensely popular conductor and well suited to being filmed.

This material represents some of the earliest televised concerts with the Boston Symphony and Charles Munch, and has been restored using the greatest care and state-of-the-art techniques. It is of exceptional musical interest and rare historic value.

Munch demonstrates a clear enjoyment of the works and combines discipline with freedom, guiding the orchestra to a thrilling performance.

Genoveva is dramatic, whilst he gives a ‘sunny’ rendition of Schubert’s Fifth Symphony. David Hurwitz wrote on classicstoday.com regarding a Schubert recording with Charles Munch and the BSO: “It is unbelievably exciting, with the orchestra playing as if its collective life depended on it”.

Munch had a great affection for and appreciation of Schumann’s Second Symphony, programming it in four different Boston Symphony Orchestra seasons, taking it on tour on each occasion. Munch never recorded Schumann's Symphony No.2 or Schubert's 5th Symphony, so these recordings are completely new to his discography.

This DVD also represents the first release of the works by the BSO.

Two of ICA’s BSO DVDs featuring Charles Munch as conductor, have been awarded the Diapason d’Or in France’s Diapason magazine.

Barenboim plays Schumann & Tchaikovsky

Barenboim plays Schumann & Tchaikovsky

Schumann:

Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 54

Recorded live at Stadthalle Erlangen, 1991

Tchaikovsky:

Piano Concerto No. 1 in B flat minor, Op. 23

Recorded live at the Gasteig, Munich, 1991

A new release of the series of Metropolitan Munich programs.

Today Daniel Barenboim is internationally recognized and revered as an orchestral and operatic conductor, pianist, and a musical ambassador and also as a humanitarian. Partnering him is the remarkable conductor Sergiu Celibidache. “He was one of the greatest musicians I ever encountered”, says Barenboim. Sergiu Celibidache has been called a musical giant, a magician, a brilliant lion-tamer and an enfant terrible of classical music. He was a legend in his own lifetime, mesmerizing orchestras audiences and critics with his intensity and brilliance.

Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No.1 is one of the most popular of his compositions and among the best known of all piano concerti. The Schumann concerto is no less influential with its influence heard in Grieg’s Piano Concerto. Both works show Barenboim at his consummate best.

“These 1991 performances exchange surface excitement for a poetic probing of the music's deeper undercurrents, with spellbinding results. A triumph.” BBC Music Magazine, April 2012 *****

“admirers will find much to interest them...It’s notable for the richness of Celibidache’s verbal pointers...the longish Strauss rehearsal will merit a place on your shelf. It is an interesting character study - of control, relaxation, terseness and more floridly encouraging praise. Psychologically it’s a rewarding half an hour plus - and the performance shows the translation of those ideas and ideals in fine fashion.” MusicWeb International, November 2012

A concert film by Christian Berger (with complete performances of the Symphonies)

Schumann:

Christine Schäfer

Christine Schäfer

Films by Oliver Herrmann

Schoenberg:

Pierrot lunaire, Op. 21

Schumann:

Dichterliebe, Op. 48

Christine Schäfer (soprano), Natascha Osterkorn (piano)

In Dichterliebe (2000), a film by Oliver Herrmann based on Robert Schumann’s song-cycle of the same name, the boundaries between song recital and reality blur. The chosen setting – a night club in the centre of Berlin – creates the intimate, dark salon atmosphere in which the songs might also have been performed at the time they were written. Returning to origins in this way, the film departs from the concert atmosphere in which song-recitals are normally performed nowadays.

In the film One Night. One Life (1999), based on the cycle Pierrot Lunaire, Arnold Schönberg’s opus 21, director Oliver Herrmann has created a surreal, at times grotesque dream world set in a modern city, through which Pierrot (Christine Schäfer) moves like a spirit. In each new number she passes through different scenes and levels of the world around us: such as an abattoir, a peep-show, a station or a supermarket.

“Schäfer's virtuosity as a singing actress is exploited to the full in this highly imaginative double-bill. In the Schumann, work and artists are placed in a new and controversial context, with the production of the film intermingled with the performance of the cycle. In an intimate, sparsely lit nightclub in Berlin-Mitte, recreating the salon atmosphere of a performance in the composer's time, the cycle is sung by the soprano in a tight-fitting black outfit while moving around the room in sympathy with evocations of each song's mood. The idea is to make the emotions of the work part of everyday life.
Schäfer's reading of the songs is at once simple and intense, devoid entirely of sentimentality.
She's supported in the performance and rehearsal by the equally fascinating personality of the pianist Natascha Osterkorn.
As far as one can tell, the singer isn't dubbed here. But in the 'staging' of Pierrot lunaire, she's undoubtedly miming to her own Sprechgesang.
With clown-like make-up, Schäfer wanders Kafka-like, through a kaleidoscopic range of situations and venues – including an abattoir, railway station and a medical lecture theatre – vaguely appropriate to the texts. In this, one of the soprano's best-known roles, she excels in declaiming the text with meaning, assisted by that past master of the genre, Pierre Boulez.
As a bonus, there's a 45-minute interview with the singer. This whole issue extends the boundaries of interpreting vocal works on DVD. A riveting experience.”
