“a powerful and warmly expressive performance...Malfitano is an abrasive Salome, confident from the start, knowing exactly what she wants...Estes in his prime is a powerful Jokanaan...[Rysanek] gives a classic performance as Herodias, searingly compelling in her imperious way.” Penguin Guide, 2010 edition **/*** | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |

“This work is superbly composed. It is full of depth and contemplation. It is as if while writing it the ideas and thoughts simply flowed out of him. Strauss has this unbelievable gift of being able to compose music people enjoy playing, enjoy performing and enjoy listening to.” In Richard Strauss, Nagano recognises “a natural, almost instinctive ability to write for orchestra.” Kent Nagano Recorded Live in the Berlin Philharmonie, 2006 | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

The only film version available of this opera, the celebrated director Otto Schenk’s intimate film of Strauss’s comedy of manners, set in mid-19th century Vienna. Schenk’s beautiful staging uses traditional sets and costumes, making this a classic, historic and faithful account. “Schenk's direction is stodgy, but authentic settings and a superb cast, with Janowitz in angelic voice and Solti at his Straussian finest make this the best Arabella in any medium. Michael Scott Rohan” BBC Music Magazine, June 2008 ***** | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

Renée Fleming (Arabella), Morten Frank Larsen (Mandryka), Julia Kleiter (Zdenka), Alfred Muff (Waldner), Cornelia Kallisch (Adelaide), Sen Guo (Fiakermilli), Johan Weigel (Matteo), Peter Straka (Elemer) Zurich Opera, Franz Welser-Möst High Definition filming from the Zurich Opera in 2007. “…Fleming looks fabulous, knows and can deliver good German, and can sing this role at least as well as anyone on the planet at the moment. But it's a shame that all concerned did not wait for a genuinely new production to preserve. This run-through of an old staging... is fluent and energetic... but it is not an evening pregnant with dramatic insight. In the pit Welser-Möst is an efficient, unemotional guide to the score...” Gramophone Magazine, Awards Issue 2008 “Fleming truly makes an ideal Arabella, beautiful of person and voice, and with a natural freshness of characterization...Sets and costumes are admirably in period, and Welser-Most directs the orchestra with proper Straussian romantic warmth.” Penguin Guide, 2010 edition **** “to be among the most powerful creative influences on opera in recent times” The Telegraph | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

June Anderson (soprano), Roberto Saccà (tenor), Scott Mac Allister (tenor) & Daniel Lewis Williams (bass0 rchestra e Coro del Teatro La Fenice di Venezia, Stefan Anton Reck (conductor) & Paul Curran (director) The creation of Daphne was not a simple affair, especially for what concerned the poetic text (due to the modest talent of the librettist Joseph Gregor), but on 15th October 1938 the opera was finally premièred at Dresden’s Staatstheater. On the podium was the young conductor Karl BÖhm. Daphne is a masterpiece of early 20th-century vocal music. Structured in a single act, this opera is a solid work with a rich musical vein. Strauss’s orchestration appears, as always, remarkably refined. The vocal writing is demanding for all the main characters, but especially so for the protagonist, here interpreted by a magnificent June Anderson. Filmed in high definition at Venice’s La Fenice, the present production is directed by Paul Curran. | | | This item is currently out of stock at the UK distributor.
