Marius Petipa’s demanding but enchanting choreography of Tchaikovsky’s romantic fairytale The Sleeping Beauty is one of the best-loved of all classical ballets. This recording of Anthony Dowell’s gloriously romantic 1994 production, with charming, dreamlike designs by Maria Bjørnson, features an all-star cast led by Viviana Durante as a charismatic Princess Aurora, Zoltán Solymosi as a delightful Prince Florimund and Anthony Dowell as a wonderfully dishevelled Carabosse. The Royal Ballet, in exceptionally fine form, is beautifully accompanied by the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, conducted by Barry Wordsworth. ‘Viviana Durante, who replaces the injured Darcey Bussell, is outstanding as Aurora. Radiant and youthful, she dances with an ease and naturalness that is enchanting. She also takes astonishing risks, holding a difficult balance for an extra few seconds while maintaining immaculately clean lines.’ Evening Standard “Maria Björnson's designs horrified the ballet conservatives, but visually this is the best Beauty ever. Petipa's choreography survives mostly intact with Zoltán Solymosi's handsome Prince and Viviana Durante's spellbinding Aurora.” BBC Music Magazine, January 2010 ***** | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Claudio Abbado conducts Prokofiev, Berg & TchaikovskyLucerne Festival at Easter 2010
Five years after first conducting the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra in their Venezuelan home, Claudio Abbado continues his commitment to this stunning ensemble in this first joint audiovisual concert recording. Prokofiev’s extrovert Scythian Suite is a gift for the boundless energy of these young players, while the intricacy and anguish of Berg’s Lulu-Suite are an Abbado speciality, with soprano Anna Prohaska, in her Lucerne Festival debut, singing the heroine’s dazzling statement of self-justification. The concert ends with an impassioned account of Tchaikovsky’s Pathétique, his final symphony, one of the most moving works in music history. Picture Format DVD: NTSC 16:9 Sound Formats DVD: Dolby Digital 5.1., DTS 5.1, PCM Stereo, Region Code: 0 (worldwide) Booklet notes: Songtexts in German Running Time: 111:45 Disc Format: DVD 9 FSK: 0 “It's amazing the way Abbado brings the melodic writing to the fore in the very different worlds of the Prokofiev and the Berg Lulu Suite, crowned by Anna Prohaska's meaningful characterisation...As for Tchaikovsky's Pathétique, I challenge you to sit unshaken through the way Abbado nurtures string tone, body and vibrato from his Latin players.” BBC Music Magazine, January 2011 ***** “Aided by superb camera work, we see him, gaunt but energised, bringing sophistication and élan to Prokofiev’s monster canvas, conjuring magic and fragrance from the Berg and driving the Pathétique to the edge of the abyss.” Financial Times, 14th January 2011 **** “It's scintillatingly communicative. Some of the players are noticeably a touch nervous; it makes the Tchaikovsky grippingly heartfelt while the Berg...has an edgy quality that really brings it alive...Watching Abbado's response to these young Latinos, and vice-versa, reminds you of those transcendental human qualities music has...I can't imagine there being a more engaging audio-visual recording of [these works]” Classic FM Magazine, March 2011 **** “the combination of [Abbado's] sophisticated ear for sonority with the band's raw energy and sheer strength in numbers make for some terrific music-making...his exquisite touch is evident throughout in what is obviously a meticulously prepared account as well as a suitably emotive one...[Prohaska] is marvellous.” International Record Review, April 2011 BBC Music Magazine

| | | Margot Fonteyn & Michael Somes
Tchaikovsky’s three ballet masterpieces are all rare studio performances from the 1950s, featuring the legendary Margot Fonteyn. Innately musical and technically perfect, Fonteyn was also a brilliant actress and is seen here at the height of her career with the celebrated Michael Somes, her dynamic partner during this creative period. Fonteyn and Somes were the perfect match in terms of physique, presence, style and technique. The selections from these three classic ballets demonstrate just how successful their partnership was. Fonteyn made her mark dancing Aurora from Sleeping Beauty, a role in which she and the Sadler’s Wells Ballet made their American debut in 1949, ten years before this BBC studio production. All three performances are released here for the first time on DVD with the extracts from Swan Lake representing one of the earliest appearances of Fonteyn on film. 1DVD Sound format: LPCM Mono Picture format: 4:3 Running time: 72’ Subtitles: n/a Menu languages: English Booklet languages: E/F/G Region code: 0 Territory Restrictions: None | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Tchaikovsky Iolanta & Stravinsky Persephone2012 Teatro Real, Madrid
Amrita, Pequeños Cantores & Chorus and Orchestra of the Teatro Real, Teodor Currentzis (Musical Director) & Peter Sellars (Stage Director) Set Designer George Tsypin Costume Designers Martin Pakledinaz & Helen Siebrits Lighting Designer James F. Ingalls Iolanta is a one act lyric opera, sung in Russian, by Tchaikovsky. Performed in the style of a nineteenth-century Italian melodrama, the scenes have a recitative introduction followed by a single arioso, aria, duet or chorus. Persephone is a three act melodrama, sung in French, by Stravinsky. It is a story of regeneration, symbolised in Sellars use of dancers from the Cambodian dance company, Amrita Performing Arts. Peter Sellars, one of the most innovative creators on today's stage, has linked these two productions by using the same stage setting, instantly archaic yet modern, and lit by rich colours to define the journey from darkness to light. “It would be hard to find a more committed, vocally assured pair than Ekaterina Scherbachenko and Pavel Cernoch” BBC Music Magazine, March 2013 **** “Iolanta is concerned with the transition from darkness to light...one's attention is caught by Sellars's telling direction: faces suffused in light, faces caught in profile...Persephone, also about light and dark, is staged with the same set...Currentzis conducts both pieces impeccably: don't miss.” Gramophone Magazine, January 2013 “The singing in the present performance is admirable throughout, with idiomatic Russian singing but without the apparent wobble which can put off some non-Russian listeners. Match this with full-blooded playing from the Teatro Real orchestra. The production by Peter Sellars is generally clear although sometimes confused by a bizarre choice of camera angle or subject” MusicWeb International, February 2013 “There are fine performances from Dominique Blanc in the title role and Paul Groves as Eumolpe. The real touch of genius, though, is Sellars' decision to reimagine the piece in terms of eastern dance rather than ballet, and the choreography, by Cambodia's Amrita Performing Arts, is exquisite.” The Guardian, 13th December 2012 **** | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

It is no exaggeration to say that even without Tchaikovsky’s music, the sumptuousness and elegance of the screen images are such that one could enjoy it as a purely visual experience. Add to that one of the most radiantly inspired orchestral scores of the nineteenth century and the results are quite simply irresistible” International Record Review, March 2013 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |
