| | | Plácido Domingo - My Greatest Roles Volume 4 (Verismo Opera)
ANDREA CHÉNIER (Giordano) – The Royal Opera Covent Garden Giordano’s passionate opera is set in Paris immediately before and during the French Revolution. Placido Domingo stars in the title role as the idealistic poet, and Maddalena, the object of Chénier’s adoration, is portrayed by the Bulgarian soprano Anna Tomowa Sintow. A servant-turned-revolutionary, Gérard, sung by Italian baritone Giorgio Zancanaro, also loves Maddalena, and when he is elevated to the revolutionary court he wreaks his revenge against Chénier who is condemned to death. The Orchestra of the Royal Opera House is conducted by Julius Rudel. EL GATO MONTÉS (Penella) – Los Angeles Music Center Opera Plácido Domingo returns to his musical roots in a rare staging of Manuel Penella’s El Gato Montés (The Wild Cat). Verónica Villarroel portrays the peasant girl, torn by her love for the dashing bandit, sung by Justino Díaz, and heroic matador Rafael, sung by Plácido Domingo. Jealous love, misplaced honour and noble revenge all form part of the Los Angeles Music Center Opera’s production of El Gato Montés. In a short introduction, Domingo reminisces about performing in, and growing to love, this opera with his parents and sister during his childhood. The Los Angeles Music Center Opera Orchestra is conducted by Miguel Roa. PAGLIACCI (Leoncavallo) – Washington National Opera This often-performed short opera uses the play-within-a play device to explore the classic operatic themes of passion, adultery, jealousy and revenge. The great tenor aria, Vesti la giubba, expresses the anguish of the cuckolded husband who is a performing clown but must make others laugh, even as his heart is breaking. Franco Zeffirelli’s production is set in a contemporary urban environment, with fire eaters, children, animals, jugglers and acrobats. Plácido Domingo gives a definitive performance as Canio, showing that he is arguably the finest actor-tenor of our time. The Washington National Opera Orchestra is conducted by Leonard Slatkin. | | | Filmed at the Palazzo Ducale, Martina Franca, Italy, 4–6 August 2007, as part of the 33rd Festival of the Valle D’Itria, Italy
Serena Daolio, Danilo Formaggia, Pierluigi Dilengite, Natalizia Carone, Angelica Girardi, Mara D’Antini, Maria Rosa Rondinelli, Marcello Rosiello, Giovanni Coletta & Graziano De Pace Orchestra Internazionale d’Italia & Slovak Chamber Choir, Manlio Benzi (conductor) & Alessio Pizzech (director) Sung in Italian Subtitles in Italian and English This centenary performance of Umberto Giordano’s Marcella was prepared from the composer’s manuscript, the score and parts having been destroyed during World War II. Recalling Verdi’s La Traviata and Puccini’s La Rondine, as well as Giordano’s own Andrea Chenier and Fedora, Marcella is the story of a poor girl and a painter whose idyllic affair is shattered when events reveal that her true love is actually a prince incognito. “Serena Daolio and Danilo Formaggia make an attractive couple … Formaggia sings the role [of Giorgio] with enviable freedom and certainly relishes Giordano’s long-lined melodies … The supporting cast are all well cast, providing good support in the ensembles in the opening scene … a fine, creditable account of an interesting rarity.” MusicWeb International “This hour-long, forgotten work from 1907 is highly recommendable for lovers of agonised separation, with a lovely if implausible setting.” BBC Music Magazine, October 2009 **** | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

“This is something of a find – a production produced in Milan's television studios in 1973 that does more than justice to Giordano's verismo work about personal conflicts at the time of the French Revolution. It's directed, with considerable imagination, by the Czech Vaclav Kaslik, at the top of his profession in the 70s. In realistic period sets he unerringly creates the milieu of a degenerate aristocracy in Act 1 and of the raw mob-rule of the Revolution in the succeeding acts. The only drawback is the poor lip-synch. Conductor Bruno Bartoletti makes certain we're unaware of the score's weaker moments and releases all the romantic passion in Giordano's highly charged writing for his principals. Chénier was one of Corelli's most notable roles so it's good that his splendid portrayal has been preserved for posterity. He doesn't disappoint with his excitingly trumpet-like tones and finely moulded phrasing of the composer's grateful writing for his tenor hero, and – although already 52 – he still looks the part of the glamorous, challenging poet. Cappuccilli was famous for his Gérard and here – at the height of his powers – he projects all the man's conflicting feelings with enormous conviction on a stream of burnished tone. Celestina Casapietra, a generally underrated soprano from Genoa, is just what Maddalena should be, and sings with a nice combination of tenderness and intense feeling. She and Corelli do full justice to their duets. The RAI orchestra plays well, but unfortunately it's too backwardly placed as regards the singers.” Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010 | | | Usually despatched in 8 - 10 working days. |
