A choreographic concert by and with Juan Kruz Díaz de Garaio Esnaola

Conversation: Juan Kruz Diaz de Garaio Esnaola & Midori Seiler

Following the internationally acclaimed staging of Purcell's opera Dido and Aeneas (2005) and the opening production at Berlin's new arts space, Radialsystem V, 4 Elements - 4 Seasons is the third collaboration between the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin and the company Sasha Waltz & Guests. 4 Elements- 4 Seasons juxtaposes two almost contemporaneous yet very different works in a choreographic concert, both of which take depictions of nature as their starting point. After sold-out performances in 2007 the production has triumphed in Cologne, Baden-Baden, St. Pölten, Paris, Istanbul, and Bregenz. In the first part, Rebel's Les Éléments, the dancer fashions the process of a creation and the cycle of growth and decay. In the second part, The Four Seasons, the orchestra itself is choreographed. After long avoiding so frequently performed a work as The Four Seasons, the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin presents an unconventional version of what are the most popular Baroque violin concertos. Clemens-Maria Nuszbaumer has conceived a musical arrangement for two small string orchestras, each with a harpsichord as continuo instrument, which are placed opposite each other on a relatively large expanse of the stage. In the foreground stands or sits a small group of solo violin, cello and lute, occasionally joined by a solo viola. By means of this layout - and a few small interventions in the distribution of parts - it is possible to create attractive contrasts between the intimate solo group in the foreground and the sonorous 'décor' in the background. Thus, for example, the rolling thunder in the storm scene of the second and third movements of 'Summer' can genuinely move to and fro within the orchestra. Juan Kruz Diaz de Garaio Esnaola was born in the Spanish Basque Country. After training as a countertenor, he switched to dance. He has taken part in various internationally acclaimed films as a dancer, actor and choreographer. He has worked with Sasha Waltz since 1996 New Space for the Arts in Berlin: In September 2006 Radialsystem V was opened as a new centre for creative development in Berlin. In a short space of time it has established itself time as a venue for innovative and prestigious concerts, dance and music theatre performances both in Berlin and at a national and international level. The artistic directors and managing partners of Radialsystem V are its two founders, Jochen Sandig and Folkert Uhde.

“This certainly sheds new light on the concept of the peripatetic musician.” BBC Music Magazine, May 2010 ***

“The Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin has certainly achieved [this musical integrity] with its choreographic concert of naturethemed Baroque music…Seiler’s sweetly fluid virtuosity is breathtaking.” Classic FM Magazine

“There are two ways to approach this film: dismiss it as risible and pretentious or surrender to its originality and surreal imagery. Either way, watch the bonuses first for an explanation of the genesis of the concert and for the discussion between the solo violinist (Midori Seiler) and the extravagantly monickered choreographer and dancer Juan Kruz Diaz de Garaio Esnaola.” Gramophone Magazine, December 2009

Alfred Deller (countertenor)

Included in the documentary - Alfred Deller sings in public.

Back in 1975 Benoit Jacquot, then a very young director met up with Alfred Deller to make this documentary-interview, which offers one of the very few filmed documents of the most famous countertenor of the modern era. The DVD is accompanied by a bonus CD featuring studio recordings of some of the pieces sung in concert in the film.

“…Deller… answers questions about his own life and career, the history of the countertenor, and how the voice is produced. Whilst beguiled by his clear, expressive voice, we can study his eloquent gestures as he sings. CD and DVD show clearly how and why Deller was the champion (in all senses) of the countertenor voice previously unregarded by the general public and confined for centuries to English church choirs.” BBC Music Magazine, July 2009 ****

Mozart: Don Giovanni, K527

Mozart: Don Giovanni, K527

Vienna version, 1788

Director: Vincent Boussard; Costumes: Christian Lacroix; Designer: Vincent Lemaire and Lighting: Alain Poisson

Johannes Weisser (Don Giovanni), Marcos Fink (Leporello), Alexandrina Pendatchanska (Donna Elvira), Werner Güra (Don Ottavio), Malin Byström (Donna Anna), Sunhae Im (Zerlina), Nikolai Borchev (Masetto) & Alessandro Guerzoni (Commendatore)

Freiburger Barockorchester & Innsbruck Festival Chorus, René Jacobs (musical direction)

After the success of Così fan tutte and The Marriage of Figaro, René Jacobs' CD recording of this centrepiece of the Mozart/Da Ponte trilogy offered us his reflections on Classical opera and garnered serious acclaim worldwide. Performed at the Innsbruck festival in August 2006 and filmed in Baden-Baden, this production is nourished by his thoughts on Don Giovanni as taboo-breaker but still respects Mozart's intentions as closely as possible.

In the documentary Looking for Don Giovanni, the director Nayo Titzin follows the creation of this production in the search for musical truth. A blu-ray version will be released later this year.

“The sets are extremely simple, the voices not powerful but fresh, and there's a spontaneity about most of the show.” BBC Music Magazine, June 2008 ***

“The Lacroix-dressed cast in Innsbruck performed as a true ensemble. Johannes Weisser was an energetic Giovanni, Marcos Fink a huge hit as the hapless Leporello. Alexandrina Pendatchanska fully inhabited the role of Elvira and Sunhae Im was a remarkable Zerlina, bringing a touch of wiliness to the character’s vulnerability.” Gramophone Magazine

Handel: Giulio Cesare in Egitto

Handel: Giulio Cesare in Egitto

Andreas Scholl (Giulio Cesare), Inger Dam-Jensen (Cleopatra), Randi Steene (Cornelia), Tuva Semmingsen (Sesto), Christopher Robson (Tolomeo), Palle Knudsen (Achilla) & James Huw Jeffries (Nireno)

Concerto Copenhagen, Lars Ulrik Mortensen

Here is what is probably Handel's most accomplished opera: the heir to L'incoronazione di Poppea with respect to the villainy of some of its characters, but also the Baroque ancestor of certain Romantic operas!

Scrupulously based on historical characters, this work illustrates many different facets of the human soul, and also boasts perhaps the most sumptuous orchestral textures Handel ever conceived, magnificently brought out by Lars Ulrik Mortensen in this production from the Copenhagen Opera.

Francisco Negrin’s transposition of the opera to the universe of modern war and Anthony Baker’s refined designs place Andreas Scholl (Giulio Cesare) and the other soloists in an unsettling, crepuscular atmosphere that is highly contemporary.

Direction: Francisco Negrin, Design & costumes: Anthony Baker

“Though all of the performances are delivered with some intelligence Negine fails to draw much in the way of intensity from any of his singers, either individually or in confrontation. …any DVD Caesar has to measure itself against Glyndebourne's (on Opus Arte), which is going to take some beating.” BBC Music Magazine, November 2007 ***

“This is certainly the most insightful and intelligent for drama, and probably also the best for all-round musical consistency” Gramophone Magazine

“Francisco Negrin's production, though not without judiciously applied humour in a few places, is essentially of a serious nature (and more so than his lighter and brighter Sydney production, reviewed above). Unsurprisingly, this sympathetic approach suits Handel's operaseria to a tee. There are neither damaging large cuts nor ill-advised reordering of movements, and Negrin's ideas fully support the musico-dramatic nature of the characters as presented in the libretto and score. The modernistic setting laced with elements of ancient Egypt provides the platform for a dark and brooding drama.
Where some directors use tricks to amuse the audience, Negrin uses visual playfulness to illustrate a serious point about the characters (such as the contest between elevating thrones in 'Va tacito'). It is refreshing that at the end there is little doubt that the good guys have triumphed: Sesto is caked in Tolomeo's blood, which seems to mark his coming of age in a brutal world, but there is no attempt made to ridicule the victorious leading characters, who fully deserve their happy ending.
Andreas Scholl's singing is consistently astute, and his acting has advanced considerably in subtlety since his operatic debut in Glyndebourne's Rodelinda nearly a decade ago. However, this is an excellent team performance.
Inger Dam-Jensen performs with the ideal sincerity and emotiveness that Cleopatra's character too often lacks in superficial productions.
Tuva Semmingsen's Sesto sings with crystalclear phrasing ('Cara speme' is heart-stopping).
Christopher Robson's singing is weak but his acting as the nasty Tolomeo is superb in its timing of gestures (there is plenty of comedy in his scenes, but he is brutal and menacing rather than the simply camp idiot too often portrayed onstage). Lars Ulrik Mortensen's direction of the music from his harpsichord is well nigh perfect.
This is not the most flamboyant or fancy Giulio Cesare on DVD, but it is certainly the most insightful and intelligent for drama, and probably also the best for all-round musical consistency.”
