Donizetti: Rita

Donizetti: Rita

Aldo Caputo, Massimiliano Gagliardo, Priscille Laplace & Alberto Rinaldi

Opera Royal de Wallonie, Claudio Scimone (conductor) & Stefano Mazzonis di Pralafera (director)

First recording on DVD Edition of the original French version.

The thorny subject of marital violence is set against a hilarious backdrop in this one-act farce where, contrary to what we are used to seeing in opera, tenor and baritone do their best to free themselves of the female protagonist, to whom both are married.

The result is a perfect balance of all elements, which makes of Rita a small but significant example of Donizetti’s musical experience.

Donizetti: Don Pasquale

Barbara Hendricks (Norina), Gabriel Bacquier (Don Pasquale), Gino Quilico (Malatesta), Luca Canonici (Ernesto), René Schirrer (Un notaio)

Orchestra: Sinfonietta de Varsovie & Les chœurs du festival, Gabriele Ferro

My Favourite Opera – a new series of EuroArts: Here we study the results of involvement with a specific role. We witness musical and stage rehearsals in 1991, listen to what the artists have to say about the work in progress and share in private moments.

World famous and distinguished soprano Barbara Hendricks stars as the heroine Norina in Donizetti’s famous comic opera Don Pasquale amongst the great French baritone Gabriel Bacquier, the Canadian baritone Gino Quilico and the Italian tenor Luca Canonici.

Barbara Hendricks’ passion for detail preludes her participation in the fly-by-night operatic scene: it is fascinating to discover how thorough her work is when she sings opera.

The Hungarian feature-film director Márta Mészáros paints a telling picture of the artist at work and portrays with superb photography the idyllic setting of Aix-en-Provence Festival in the South of France.

This intimate portrait of a great opera singer also reveals how an opera production is created at the highest level.

As is now customary, the first part of the 2012 New Year‘s Concert from Teatro La Fenice is exclusively orchestral, with Symphony No.5 by Pyotr Tchaikovsky. The second part, with soloists Jessica Pratt, Walter Fraccaro and Alex Esposito as well as the choir, is dedicated to melodrama, ending with the traditional chorus “Va pensiero” from Nabucco and the toast “Libiam ne lieti calici” from La Traviata by Giuseppe Verdi.

The twenty-seven year old conductor and violinist Diego Matheuz is a graduate of the internationally known Venezuelan Sistema and is already widely known as one of the most promising developing talents from the Americas. In 2005 he began studying conducting and soon attracted the attention of Sir Simon Rattle and Claudio Abbado, with whom he worked in Caracas, Lucerne and Bologna.

In September 2011 he was appointed as Principal Conductor of the Teatro La Fenice.

Donizetti: Linda di Chamounix

Donizetti: Linda di Chamounix

Live Recording from The Zurich Opera House, 1996

Edita Gruberova (Linda), Deon Van Der Walt (Carlo), Jacob Will (Il Marchese di boisfleury) & László Polgár (Il Prefetto)

Zurich Opera House, Adam Fischer (conductor) & Daniel Schmid (stage director)

With Linda di Chamounix Gaetano Donizetti (1797-1848) has created wonderful, inspired music. Donizetti’s unfailing attention to the last detail becomes apparent in his numerous revisions of the work, the cuts and the new arrangement of the overture, which he had initially composed as a short prelude but had then developed further, to suit the taste of the Viennese.

For the performance at the Zurich opera, the producer Daniel Schmid changed the sentimental story into an ironical post-card idyll and thus achieved a modern note. The story is now set in a snow-white mountainous region where passions develop slowly. Removed from their familiar environment, the characters lose their connection with reality and become aggressive or insane. Apart from Edita Gruberova there is hardly anyone who could express this insanity better – at the premiere in 1842 it was the soprano Eugenia Tadolini. Everything around her turns into decoration. The roles of the jealous lover Carlo Deon Van der Walt, the Marchese Jacob Will and the Prefect László Polgár are superbly cast. Under the baton of Adam Fischer, the orchestra of the Zürich opera plays in strict rhythm and with melodic delicateness.

“Gruberova has an appealing lightness and vocal flexibility allied to good legato, variety of tone and good expression. She has the ability to sound young and girlish without being tweety...Van der Walt’s singing throughout is tasteful and expressive with just the right amount of edge to give the required dramatic impetus or ardent inflection.” MusicWeb International, August 2012

Teatro La Fenice, Kurt Masur

Venice‘s Teatro La Fenice welcomed 2006 with a celebration of dance and music. After the first full season at the restored Fenice there was ample reason to celebrate the three pillars of the house: symphonic music, opera and dance.

Kurt Masur chose works by three of Italy‘s leading 19th century operatic composers, Verdi, Donizetti and Puccini and - in the year that sees the 250th anniversary of Mozart‘s birth - excerpts from two of his operas with libretti by the Venetian poet Lorenzo Da Ponte. So the live recording of the gala concert features highlights from the world’s most beloved operas, among them an extract from Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro and the duet, „Là ci darem la mano“, from his Don Giovanni, the sinfonia from Verdi‘s La forza del destino and the famous „Libiamo ne‘ lieti calici“ from La Traviata and two of his most popular choruses: „O signore, dal tetto natio“ from I lombardi alla prima crociata and „Va, pensiero“ from Nabucco. Donizetti‘s sinfonia from Don Pasquale and the tenor aria „Una furtiva lacrima“ from his L‘elisir d‘amore are featured along with the legendary “Vissi d’arte” from Puccini’s Tosca.

The outstandingly well-prepared choir of the Fenice opera house perform alongside three international opera stars: Italian dramatic soprano Fiorenza Cedolins, young tenor Joseph Calleja and longstanding Italian bass Roberto Scandiuzzi.

Donizetti: Anna Bolena

Anna Netrebko (Anna Bolena), Elina Garanca (Giovanna Seymour), Ildebrando D’Arcangelo (Enrico), Francesco Meli (Percy), Dan Paul Dumitrescu (Lord Rochefort), Elisabeth Kulman (Smeton), Peter Jelosits (Hervey)

Chor der Wiener Staatsoper & Orchester der Wiener Staatsoper, Evelino Pidò

With her sensational role debut at the Vienna State Opera, superstar diva Anna Netrebko displays a performance of rare vocal and dramatic power. The Russian soprano sings the role of the unjustly accused second wife of British King Henry VIII, ‘veering between indignant fury and tender righteousness’ and demonstrating a new level of confidence in her technique with excellent ‘passagework, particularly in trills, and seamless runs even to the lowest notes’ (Opera News).

The performance also stars DG mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča, in ‘a fantastic display of bel canto’ (Opera News) as Anna's rival Giovanna Seymour. Ildebrando D’Arcangelo brings his beautifully dark tone to the role of Enrico and young Italian tenor Francesco Meli sings the demanding role of Lord Percy with a ‘youthful virility’ (Agence France Press), promising great things for the future. On the podium Evelino Pidò 'drew playing of unusual precision and refinement...making every note matter' (Financial Times).

“It's no accident that Netrebko's better forays into bel canto have come with Garanca by her side, inspiring her to some lovely singing. Their voices blend beautifully...I find her a welcome counterpoint to Netrebko's passionate queen...Netrebko emerges from the challenge triumphantly. The sincerity in her performance is admirable, while the darker vocal qualities she possesses suit the character well.” International Record Review, May 2012

“[Netrebko] gives a demonstration of characterisation and bel canto vocal virtuosity that is second to none, Callas included...Garanca’s is a consummate interpretation by an artist at the top of her game...D'Arcangelo is a tall, handsome and seductive Enrico whose smooth singing only lacks a little lower extension... Pidò adds to his reputation in this music with a well-paced and phrased interpretation.” MusicWeb International, May 2012
