Donizetti's great tragedy is his undisputed masterpiece of melancholic romanticism, with the doomed love between Lucia and Edgardo retold from Sir Walter Scott's novel The Bride of Lammermoor. The 1992 production heightens the story’s powerful libretto with its dramatic visual design and first class musical performances. PICTURE FORMAT: 4:3

“Pier' Alli, the producer-designer explores a poetically Romanticised view of decaying, mist-ringed Scottish castles which in its consciously old-fashioned way chimes well with the gently singer-supportive conducting of Stefano Ranzani. The principals are all Italian and while on paper this may not be a dream cast, in practice the blend and stylistic know-how of the voices turn out extremely well. After a chilly start Mariella Devia lavishes on the title role the long-lined bel canto phrases for which she has become renowned, matched by the superb bass Carlo Colombara (Bidebent) and the warm-spirited tenor Vincenzo La Scola (Edgardo)...” BBC Music Magazine, September 2004 **** | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

| | | A Gala Concert with Joan Sutherland and Marilyn Horne
A 1961 concertante performance of Vincenzo Bellini's Beatrice di Tenda was of lasting importance in the careers of the two prima donnas. It was here that they met each other and performed together for the first time, and thereafter they formed a brilliant partnership who starred together in many performances and concerts of works from the bel canto repertoire. This recording of a gala concert at Sydney Opera House offers a varied programme presenting a representative cross-section from the extraordinarily broad repertoires of both these exceptional singers. Each of them performs as a soloist on a variety of songs and operatic arias, and naturally they also join voices for bravura performances of famous operatic duets. And finally the two singers show with Benedict's "The Gypsy and the Bird" and Foster's "Beautiful Dreamer" that they are not above indulging a taste for lighter musical forms. Recording Date: 1986
Place of recording: From the Sydney Opera House

“The whole show takes its tone from Alagna's lovable Nemorino” BBC Music Magazine, January 2010 “Frank Dunlop's witty, unvarnished view of Donizetti's country comedy, updated to the 1930s, is delightful to see, wondrous to hear. Gheorghiu and Alagna make an ideal partnership as capricious girl and shy bumpkin. They both act and sing their roles to near perfection in a staging that exposes the heart and heartlessness as much as the fun of this work. Singing with every care for tone and nuance, Gheorghiu presents Adina as by turns, haughty, flighty, concerned, annoyed when the other girls paw him, and finally tender when love at last triumphs, and she finds the vocal equivalent for each mood. Not so versatile vocally, but always tidy and responsive to the text, Alagna makes an attractively naive, emotionally vulnerable Nemorino. Scaltriti's Belcore is made deliberately unsympathetic by Dunlop and at times he seems to be overblowing his basically attractive voice. There need be no reservations about Alaimo's witty yet genial Dulcamara: all the buffo elements of the part are there but never exaggerated. Evelino Pidò conducts a trim account of the score, his often fast speeds justified by the way his singers enjoy them in terms of athletic delivery. Brian Large's video direction is predictably exemplary. The sound and widescreen picture make us feel present at an obviously enjoyable night at the opera.” Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010 | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

“Sparkling harmony …the combined talents of Bryn Terfel and Cecilia Bartoli… raise the temperature… Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro… is charged with intrigue and sexual tension and they captured the mood with pinpoint vocal interplay and assured comic acting…a formidable display of coloratura technique and lasersharp intonation.” The Guardian ***** | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |
