Magali Léger (Léonore), Claire Debono (Isabelle), Maryline Fallot (Jacinte), Frédéric Antoun (Florival), Brad Cooper (Don Alonze) & Vincent Billier (Don Lopez) Le Cercle de l’Harmonie, Jérémie Rhorer (conductor) & Pierre-Emmanuel Rousseau (director) In Grétry’s L’Amant jaloux, the aesthetic of Enlightenment France is revived in a libretto full of wit and subtlety and a remarkable melodic score whose dramatic movement recalls Mozart, who was staying in Paris at the time. The Queen’s music director writes a masterpiece of the genre, a model of demi-caractère that balances comedy and sentiment. L’Amant jaloux was included in the repertoire of many European theatres and confirmed Grétry as the greatest Franch composer of his time. The most famous arias in the opera include O douce nuit, the tenor serenade Tandis que tout sommeille (recorded by Roberto Alagna, amongst others) and the coloratura display piece Je romps l a chaîne qui m'engage. The composer admitted the last named aria had no dramatic function, but he wanted to give his soprano star Marie-Jeanne Trial a chance to shine. The musicologist David Charlton claims Mozart and his librettist Lorenzo da Ponte knew Grétry's opera and were influenced by its ensembles when they wrote The Marriage of Figaro. 1DVD NTSC 1h 20 16/9, colour, all zones Language: Fr, subtitles Fr, Eng, Spanish, Ger “this pleasingly unpretentious production, filmed in the Opera Royal Versailles, offer 80 minutes' modest entertainment. The Louis XVI costumes and sets are stylish and unfussy. There is skilled and spirited playing from the period orchestra under Jeremie Rhorer. And while there are no outstanding voices amongst the youthful cast, all the singers point their words wittily” Gramophone Magazine, April 2011 | | | This item is currently out of stock at the UK distributor.
