| | | Garth Knox & Brian O'Reilly: Spectral Strands
Garth Knox (viola & viola d’amore), Brian O’Reilly (visuals) & Götz Dipper, Michael Edwards, Joachim Goßmann (electronics) Spectral Strands, with works for viola, both with and without electronics, interpreted by the most outstanding contemporary viola player, combines with the literally brilliant video material, a unique conjunction of sound, space and images. Garth Knox’s collaboration with video artist Brian O’Reilly has resulted in an audiovisual programme where the audible and visible correspondences of light, shadow, texture and colour and their fragmentation offer new ways of perception. Although the rainbow is a familiar object, the discovery that ordinary white light can be split into a spectacular spectrum of bands of light remains a source of wonder. With the advent of spectral music the same process was applied to sound, and the no less spectacular sound spectrums obtained with the help of the computer excited a whole generation of composers. The music, with its abstract but particularly emotional qualities and the video, in its play with barely recognisable forms and objects which dissolve into patterns, coloured surfaces and rhythms establish in the selected works consistent references to each other. It is precisely in this special relationship that hearing extends itself into seeing and vice versa. This DVD features a recital performance which Karita Mattila gave to a compatriot audience at the Finnish National Opera in Helsinki, in October 2006. International critics praised the recorded sell-out concerts: “Karita Mattila at her glorious peak… No wonder the Helsinki audience went berserk.” The Daily Telegraph This is the much-awaited first-ever release of Helsinki Recital on DVD; it includes previously unreleased encore material. The original sound recording of Helsinki Recital, released as hybrid SACD in June 2007 garnered the highest accolades throughout the international press, including BBC Music Magazine ‘Song Choice’ and Gramophone ‘Editor’s Choice’. This product includes a free bonus CD compilation featuring Karita Mattila and pianist Ilmo Ranta with German and Finnish standard repertoire Lied songs. | | | Directed by Peter Sellars
L’amour de loin was named “Best New Work of the Year” by The New York Times in 2000 “Since its premiere in 2000, Saariaho's first opera has been widely performed, and won universal plaudits. It's a simple tale, based on the real-life troubadour prince Jaufré Rudel, who falls in love with the Countess of Tripoli without ever having met. Visually, it is stunningly austere, with two tall spiral staircases, one at each side of the stage, and the black space in between covered with water representing the sea. Finley as Jaufré has melodies which grow out of songs by the actual 12th-century troubadour-they're fascinatingly tinted by Arabic... Saariaho wrote the part of the Countess for Upshaw - she has more widely-ranging melodies, sung with complete confidence and conviction... And Groop as the Pilgrim is as fine a singing actor as the other two: much is shot in close-up, and you can feel the total involvement of all three protagonists. ...this is an incredibly beautiful and moving experience.” BBC Music Magazine, October 2005 BBC Music Magazine
