The Israel Philharmonic Orchestra - a cultural icon of Israel and one of the greatest classical ensembles in the world - celebrated its 75th Birthday on December 26th, 2011 together with three outstanding soloists of the younger generation – Julian Rachlin, Evgeny Kissin and Vadim Repin. The concert took place in the spectacular Hangar 11 at the harbor in Tel Aviv. Zubin Mehta conducted a spectacular programme of Saint-Saëns, Bach, Chopin, Chausson and Beethoven.

The film ‘Coming Home’ by János Darvas portrays the orchestra and tells of its moving history, which is both a reflection of the history of Israel and the fate of the Jews in the 20th Century. With texts from memoirs, with material from radio interviews, home movies and photos from the orchestra’s archives, as well as from private collections, the film will not only tells the story of the orchestra, but draws parallels to the fates of many individuals. Historical footage brings the 75-year history of the orchestra to life in concerts with Arturo Toscanini, Arthur Rubinstein, Leonard Bernstein, Isaac Stern, Zubin Mehta, Daniel Barenboim and Itzhak Perlman. Interviews with orchestra members from the early years weave through talks with musicians that joined later, and with current orchestra members. Moreover, Zubin Mehta, Daniel Barenboim, Itzhak Perlman and Pinkas Zukerman have their say. We also get the opportunity to watch the Israel Philharmonic in rehearsals, concerts and tours.

Saint-Saëns: Samson et Dalila

Saint-Saëns: Samson et Dalila

Live Recording from The Badisches Staatstheater, 2010

José Cura (Samson), Julia Gertseva (Dalila) & Stefan Stoll (The High Priest of Dagon)

Orchestra and Choir of The Badisches Staatstheater, Jochem Hochstenbach (conductor) & José Cura (stage director)

Set Design by JOSÉ CURA

In this saga of hatred and holy war, of power and desire, there is no victor and no truth. The god-like is diminished, power restricted, taboos are broken, love betrayed. Only the composer can afford uninterrupted pathos in the wonderful duet of Samson and Dalila in the second act, which misleads us to believe in a moving story of love. Perhaps it truly is. The story of Samson is contradictory, it is human. Camille Saint-Saëns completed the work in 1876, but was only able to bring about its first performance in 1877 through the mediation of his friend Franz Liszt – with pre-eminent success – in Weimar. In France, where the elements of oratorio and the influence of Wagner were not well received, the first performance would not follow for another 13 years. Samson et Dalila ranks among the masterpieces of 19th century French Opera - and among the showpieces favored by the Argentine tenor José Cura. In the recorded production he saw himself celebrated on stage as a unified three-in-one: eponymous hero, director and stage designer.

A Musical Journey: France

A Musical Journey: France

A Musical Tour of Brittany and Normandy

Music by Saint-Saëns and Franck

The Places

Brittany and Normandy, in Northern France, have a character all their own, preserving, as they do, ancient Celtic traditions in a countryside bounded on one side by a rocky coast-line. The great Abbey of Mont St-Michel remains a centre of pilgrimage and secular interest, and in Normandy we catch glimpses of the Bayeux Tapestry, with its near contemporary record of William of Normandy’s successful expedition in 1066 to conquer England.

The Music

The music chosen for this tour of Northern France is the Organ Symphony of Camille Saint-Saëns, a work written in memory of Franz Liszt that takes its name from the use of the organ in its grandiose final movement. The other music to be heard is an orchestral version of the Belgian-born composer César Franck’s Prelude and Chorale, written two years earlier, in 1884, and the Romance in C major, Op. 48, of Saint-Saëns.

A Musical Journey: Germany - Majestic Marches

A Musical Journey: Germany - Majestic Marches

A Musical Visit to Kulmbach and the Tin Soldier Museum

with excerpts from works byTchaikovsky, Mendelssohn, Wagner, Saint-Saëns, Delibes, Ippolitov-Ivanov, Halvorsen, Suppe, Rimsky Korsakov and Meyerbeer

The Places

On a hill above the ancient town of Kulmbach stands the imposing 12th century Hohenzollern fortress of Plassenburg. Among various collections on display is the remarkable Tin Soldier Museum, with various figures and dioramas that recreate battles and mirror the great castle itself, with a variety of scenes from all periods of human history.

The Music

The March has an inevitable part to play in human history. Marco Polo remarked on the use of music by the armies of China to terrify the enemy before a battle. Military music, however, has a more precise purpose, whatever alarm it may strike into the hearts of those who hear it. Drums and trumpets may serve as useful signals, to advance or retreat, to eat or to sleep. The same instruments and their near relations may serve to keep an army moving together, and may serve to inspire feelings of bravery and patriotism. At the same time a march can provide a suitable accompaniment to an occasion of solemnity, a wedding, a funeral or a state ceremony. The music chosen for this tour offers a series of Marches by different composers, culminating in Mendelssohn’s Wedding March.

Saint-Saëns: Samson et Dalila

Saint-Saëns: Samson et Dalila

Recorded live at the Vlaamse Opera Antwerpen/Gent, 2009

Torsten Kerl (Samson), Marianna Tarasova (Dalila), Nikola Mijailovic (High Priest), Gijs Van der Linden (Old Hebrew)

Symphonic Orchestra and Choir of the Flanders Opera, Tomáš Netopil (conductor) & Omri Nitzan and Amir Nizar Zuabi (directors)

Using the example of the impossible love between the Jew Samson and the Philistine Dalila, Camille Saint-Saëns shows the deadly conflict between two hostile cultures and religions.

Staged by the Flanders Opera Company in Antwerp in 2009, Saint-Saëns’ opera Samson et Dalila is re-located in this production to the contemporary Middle East. The two directors, Israeli Omri Nitzan and Palestinian Amir Nizar Zuabi, explore the tensions between different nations and religions, and the complex relationship between the oppressors and the oppressed. ‘In our approach to this opera we tried to move away from the quasi-biblical interpretation, and to place the story in today’s world to explain its political aspects better,’ say the two directors. ‘Acts of terror by a state will lead to acts of terror against a state, which in turn will lead to more terror by the state and this completes the vicious circle.’

Performed by the Symphonic Orchestra and Choir of Vlaamse Opera Antwerp/Gent under the baton of Czech conductor Tomáš Netopil, Samson is sung by the young German tenor Torsten Kerl and Dalila by the Russian mezzo-soprano Marianna Tarasova. The kaleidoscopic colours of the music are brought out with sensitivity and lyricism by the orchestra and singers, unfolding the dramatic story in all its tragic beauty.

With this production the intendant, Aviel Cahn, hopes to elucidate the future course he intends to follow with the Flanders Opera: bringing opera to today’s people. Samson and Dalila promises to be a production that no serious opera connoisseur would want to miss.

“Torsten Kerl's timbre suits Samson musically and textually...Kerl is massively built, but he's unafraid of movement and mantains a sympathetic presence.” International Record Review, July/August 2011

“Set in Gaza, Samson et Dalila is ripe for a modern update, especially when jointly directed by an Israeli Jew and a Palestinian...[they] have swapped the role of the Jews from occupied to occupying force...[Kerl's] clarion Wagnerian tenor rings out gloriously...there’s a sincerity and simplicity in his approach which works rather well. Tomas Netopil leads the performance...with plenty of orchestral muscle and vivid excitement in the orgiastic ‘Bacchanale’.” Opera Britannia, 30th June 2011 ****
