Princess Aurora is danced by the principal Svetlana Zakharova, well known to Parisian audiences thanks to her many performances at the Palais Garnier. She is also the soloist on the best seller 'Pharaoh's daughter' DVD released by Bel Air Classiques in 2004. They are joined by a great cast : Maria Allash (Lilac Fairy) , Artem Ovcharenko (Bluebird) and Nina Kaptsova (Princess Florine). The Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra is conducted by Vassily Sinaisky.

“Grand-scale performance of the Petipa masterpiece, with Zakharova miraculous in the lead.” BBC Music Magazine, January 2013 ****

“Unashamedly traditional, gloriously staged, with a tremendous cast … pin-sharp clarity and fine sound … essential viewing. It is no exaggeration to say that even without Tchaikovsky’s music, the sumptuousness and elegance of the screen images are such that one could enjoy it as a purely visual experience. Add to that one of the most radiantly inspired orchestral scores of the nineteenth century and the results are quite simply irresistible” International Record Review, March 2013

C(h)oeurs, a mix of Choirs (choeurs) and Hearts (coeurs) in French, is a new musical drama set against the backdrop of contemporary international economic crisis and national protests, and the ensuing changes in society.

Pursuing a reflection on the emotions felt by the individual and generated by the masses, singers from the internationally renowned Chorus of the Teatro Real perform alongside dancers of Alain Platel’s company les ballets C de la B in a spectacular presentation of excepts from Verdi’s and Wagner’s distinct works.

Many works of Giuseppe Verdi and Richard Wagner are linked to the liberal revolutions of 1848, the "Springtime of Peoples", that swept away absolutism in Europe.

Each musical piece blends seamlessly into the next, drawn by the actions of the individuals and groups through the expressiveness of their singing and movement.

Live Recording from The Schaubühne Berlin

»KÖRPER TRILOGY« A THREE-PIECE CHOREOGRAPHIC CYCLE

In 1999 Sasha Waltz started working on her three-piece choreographic cycle about the human body. In »Körper«, following up this extraordinary research, she investigates the anatomy and the physical appearance of the human being, relating her dancers‘ bodies to architecture, science, and history. »S« searches for the origin of life, of Eros, and of sensibility. »noBody« asks about the metaphysical existence of humanity.

PART II »S«

»S« represents the middle section of the trilogy »Körper«, »S« and »noBody« by Sasha Waltz. The piece acts as a connective link between the investigation of the physical being in »Körper« and the metaphysical being in »noBody«. While sexuality and Eros are all but absent from these two pieces, with »S« they constitute central themes. The New York musician Jonathan Bepler, renowned for his long-standing collaboration with Matthew Barney on »Cremaster Cycle«, composed the room-encompassing original music for the production.

Dance Crazy in Hollywood

Dance Crazy in Hollywood

featuring Frank Sinatra, Rita Hayworth, Ginger Rogers, Kim Novak, Shirley Maclaine, Cyd Charisse, Bob Fosse, Sally Forrest and many more

A Film about Choreographer HERMES PAN

Directed by ROBERT KUPERBERG

Hermes Pan began choreographing Hollywood musicals in 1933, when his long-standing collaboration with Fred Astaire began. For over three decades he was the man who made the stars dance - Ginger Rogers, Betty Grable, Rita Hayworth, Cyd Charisse, Shirley MacLaine and many others. Assimilating elements from the multitude of cultures that co-existed around him, Pan created a style of dance that was truly American.

In this programme, Pan introduces a dance extravaganza which takes viewers back to the days when the musical was all the rage, with extracts from My Gal Sal, with Rita Hayworth and Hermes Pan himself; Royal Wedding, with Fred Astaire; Kiss Me Kate, with Bob Fosse, Ann Miller and Carol Haney; Sombrero, with Cyd Charisse; Pal Joey, with Frank Sinatra, Rita Hayworth and Kim Novak; Silk Stockings, with Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse; Excuse My Dust, with Sally Forrest; Three Little Words, with Fred Astaire and Vera Allen; and the scene from Joseph L. Mankiewicz’s Cleopatra, starring Elizabeth Taylor, when she makes her entry into Rome.

This is the last programme made with Pan before his death in 1990 and is a fascinating combination of irresistible archive film of the best of Hollywood’s dancers, and the unique viewpoint of one of cinema’s greatest choreographers.

Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake

Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake

Tchaikovsky:

Swan Lake, Op. 20

Richard Winsor (The Swan/The Stranger), Dominic North (The Prince), Nina Goldman (The Queen), Madelaine Brennan (The Girlfriend), Steven Kirkham (The Private Secretary), Joseph Vaughan (The Young Prince)

The New London Orchestra, David Lloyd-Jones, Matthew Bourne (director & choreographer)

When it premiered at Sadler’s Wells in 1995, Matthew Bourne’s triumphant modern

re-interpretation of SWAN LAKE turned tradition upside down, taking the dance world by storm. Now firmly crowned as a modern day classic, this iconic production is perhaps best-known for replacing the traditional female corps de ballet with a menacing male ensemble. Matthew Bourne blends dance, humour and spectacle with extravagant, award-winning designs by Lez Brotherston, to create a provocative and powerful Swan Lake for our times.

Collecting over 30 international theatre awards, SWAN LAKE has been acclaimed as a landmark achievement on the international stage, and has thrilled audiences all over the world. It has become the longest running ballet in the West End and on Broadway and enjoyed four hugely successful tours in the UK.

This 2010 production features the exciting dancer/actor Richard Winsor in the dual roles of the Swan and the Stranger, in which he “exudes a charismatic narcissism that makes him both threatening and seductive.” (The Times). Richard has starred in many of Matthew Bourne’s productions, including Dorian Gray, Edward Scissorhands and The Car Man. He is also well known to television audiences as Father Francis in Channel 4’s Hollyoaks and featured in the dance film Streetdance 3D.

Les Sylphides

BBC STUDIO RECORDING, BROADCAST 6 APRIL 1956

Coppélia (ADAPTED FOR TELEVISION BY MARGARET DALE)

BBC STUDIO RECORDING, BROADCAST 27 OCTOBER 1957

Giselle (PAS DE DEUX FROM ACT II)

BBC STUDIO RECORDING, RECORDED 2 JUNE 1962

Philharmonia Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra & Pro Arte Orchestra, Marcus Dods, John Lanchbery & Robert Irving

Three of the ballet world’s most popular and enduring works are showcased here by prima ballerinas Nadia Nerina and Margot Fonteyn.

Originally titled ‘Chopiniana’, Les Sylphides uses the music of Chopin to create a short ‘romantic reverie’, which though Romantic in style, demands technical brilliance from its dancers. Nerina – once described by Time Magazine as ‘the company’s most polished virtuoso’ – and her colleagues capture the work perfectly.

Swanilda is a role coveted by ballerinas as the character is rarely offstage and the dancer has ample opportunity to display her technical and theatrical abilities. In this performance of Coppélia, Nerina’s sunny personality and comedic skills are in abundance. She is ably supported by her co-star Robert Helpmann, one of the greatest mime artists in ballet.

The version of Coppélia on this DVD is the first of producer Margaret Dale’s adaptations for the BBC; her other productions included Giselle, Ashton’s La Fille mal gardée and John Cranko’s Onegin and were watched by audiences of more than one million.

The final film features arguably ballet’s greatest partnership, Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev.

Though stylistically they seemed to be opposites, when they danced together their technique and temperaments blended seamlessly. This extract from the 1962 Giselle is rare sample of one their earliest collaborations.

ICA Classics’ previous DVD release featuring Nadia Nerina (ICAD5030) has received great critical acclaim, notably in the Financial Times (‘essential viewing’) and in the New Yorker (‘buried treasure’).

Falling Angels, Six Dances, No More Play, Sweet Dreams, Sarabande, Petit Mort

Music By Steve Reich, W.A. Mozart, J.S. Bach, Anton Webern

Choreography by JIŘÍ KYLIÁN

Czech choreographer Jiří Kylián is one of the most innovative and successful ballet masters on the contemporary dance scene. He always uses classical models as the foundation for his free and imaginative modern style, whose novel figures and sequences never fail to astonish. The vitality of his works is supported by an especially highly developed feeling for music, which makes it seem as if his dancers and the music they dance to both flow from a common inner impulse. His choreographies always investigate anew the meaning of dance in modern culture and society, and under his direction the Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT) has thus gained international respect and importance. The series of plotless dance pieces titled Black and White offers six examples of the rich inventive gifts of Kylián’s choreographic imagination. They not only span a remarkable spectrum of styles and moods, from metaphysics through black humour to a sensual, even voluptuous corporeality; they also explicitly indicate that the master of neo-classical dance also uses the more extreme techniques of contemporary Modern Dance as a projection screen for his existential questions. The selection of the six programmes, whose marked differences are still put together in a seamless unity, shows what Kylián can set in motion with only twenty dancers and an intelligent choice of music. Kylián’s unusual technique always achieves a functioning connection between classical economy and a release of energy equally sudden and huge.

Prokofiev: Cinderella, Op. 87

Prokofiev: Cinderella, Op. 87

A Studio Production from the Opéra National De Lyon, 1989

Francoise Joullié (Cendrillon), Dominique Lainé (Stepmother), Jayne Plaisted, Danièle Pater (The Sisters), Patrick Azzopardi (The Father) & Nathalie Delassis (Fairy Godmother)

Opéra National De Lyon, Yakov Kreisberg

Choreography by MAGUY MARIN

Sets & Costumes by MONTSERRAT CASANOVA

Lighting Design by JOHN SPRADBERRY

Maguy Marin‘s highly original and magical version of the Cinderella story was an unparalleled success through out its world tour. Anna Kisselgoff of the New York Times said that Marin‘s „vision reaches back into the universals of everyone‘s childhood - the hurts and joys resonate here with touching depth.“ Marin’s choreographic vision is so extraordinarily original and magical that it seems to evoke universally familiar images and memories of childhood. In her childlike approach to the work, the characters are presented as living dolls with real human feelings projected upon them in the way children like to identify with their toys. The fairy tale is set in a dolls’ house, the Fairy Godmother is a robot, Cinderella goes to the ball in a toy car and the Prince sets off in search of his beautiful but unknown guest astride a rocking horse…
