Some theatrical events live on in popular memory to become legends – such were Nijinsky’s appearances in Diaghilev’s early Saisons Russes in Paris. Mikhail Fokine was Diaghilev’s chief choreographer and his choreography marked a departure from many of the rigid rules and forms of classical ballet and ushered in a new expressiveness. He is widely considered to have been the creator of modern dance. This sparkling Russian gala features four Fokine ballets, all associated with Nijinsky. Recording Date: 2002

| | | The Four Seasons: a ballet by Roland Petit
Dominique Khalfouni, Denys Ganio, Luigi Bonino, Jean-Pierre Aviotte, and Jean-Charles Gil Ballet National de Marseilles Ballet by Roland Petit. Featuring the Ballet National de Marseilles, Dominique Khalfouni, Denys Ganio, Luigi Bonino, Jean-Pierre Aviotte, and Jean-Charles Gil. Antonio Vivaldi’s beautiful and well loved “Four Seasons” is brought to life by the National Ballet of Marseilles in an exciting performance presented in St Mark’s Square, Venice. The ballet, choreographed by Roland Petit, features a stellar ensemble of dancers. Offering gorgeous physical and visual counterparts to Vivaldi’s famously evocative musical journey through the year, the dancers work in pairs, trios, and large ensembles to interpret each of Vivaldi’s movements. All of the ‘Seasons’ take on powerfully choreographed lives of their own whilst Vivaldi is never relegated to mere accompaniment. This is a true partnership between music and dance. The stunning setting of St Mark’s only adds to the pleasure of the ballet, appropriately too, as Venice was Vivaldi’s home town, the scene of his success as a great Baroque composer. A beautiful evening of thrilling music and ballet. Dolby Digital 2.0 / Stereo / 4.3 / NTSC / All regions / Approx. 58 mins | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |
